Thanks for doing that experiment with exposing eggs/fry to light! I was really paranoid trying to block light and not checking my tank properly so I think I can relax about that now!!! Problem is I reused a grow out tank for a tiny killifish I found so there's already quite some debris at the bottom so I can't easily see eggs. My tetra looks a bit skinnier than yesterday though so I really want to check if anything happened...

you can look for unfertilized white eggs as a sign of breeding

@@AvatarAquatics i've got bits of debris like from the java moss at the bottom and i used some water from my pond, while fishing out the fish from there, so i can't really figure out which are eggs and which are just bits of things . i did see white things, but not 100% sure! i'm not really protecting everything from light, but it's in a rather shaded spot in the kitchen, and i dont put on the lights there in the evening.... fingers crossed i get a couple of tetra babies. i actually left the adults in there but i have made the mesh separator. if the adult looks skinny enough i will move them to another tank. normally they're out in my pond, but my population went from 23 to just 5 now in a span of months, no thanks to some kingfishers and maybe frogs.... so i'm hesitant to let them go back out. i need tetra babies!

Thank you for making this video. I have 3 neon tetra to show for in my last 6 runs of breeding. I have hatched hundreds of fries and cannot manage to keep them a live longer then 6-7 days.
I recently had 3 pairs breed in 1g tubs. I took all 3 tubs and gently poured them into a 3.5g tank. Temp was at 24 degrees. After 3 days the bottom of the tank was littered with fries. I poured a 1/4 cup of green water in and they all died.
I think I am polluting the water. I have not had success making infusoria.

Great video. I love that you've experimented to test out the various info you've read. Although I'm now working in a different industry, my education and a good part of my work experience was in intensive aquaculture. At one point I was running a salmonid broodstock hatchery and we would keep our upwelling incubators in the dark and when checking in on them we made sure we only exposed them to incandescent lighting.. With flourescent lighting we would experience die off of some of the eggs (before they had become eyed). I'm wondering if maybe the UV associated with flourescent lighting was the culprit and if that's where the rumour came from. Were you feeding Artemia salina or Artemia franciscana? I wonder if franciscana would be accepted as a first food, although I'm confident that the survival rate with infusoria as a first food would be better.

Would you reckon substituting methylene blue with homemade tannin from dried botanicals like those commercial “dark water extract” would work as effective? Of course one has to consider the water used to brew said extract to be soft enough. I was curious since tannic acid has anti fungal and bacterial property as well, and it is “organic”, as much as I don’t like to throw that word around.

Today I saw a few little( about 2 millimetres)clear fish in my community tank, I am trying to figure out if they are fry of platys, if my recently bought dwarf gourami was pregnant when we got them, of if it is fry of my cardinal tetras

Great video. What is here interesting for me, is that many breeders are breeding cardinals at the temperature of 24-25C. I see you are doing at 29C. What is the better or more efficient? Do you know? Did you try with 24-25C?

    • @AvatarAquatics
      @AvatarAquatics  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Spawned for me when I raised it to 29C, but I’m sure exact temp is not that important vs what your specific cardinals are used to and comfortable with.

    • @kadalora

Hi Marko, in my opinion: yes, it helps a lot. This is from experience with spawning Rummynose Tetras, they are far more likely to spawn at 29-30c than anything lower. I would suspect Cardinal Tetras are the same. Goodluck :)

Really enjoy the knowledge you share. Really simple. I have a 10 gallon tank with cherry shrimp. Would they help keep the eggs mold free or don't bother? I will probably move the shrimp to another tank and begin my journey into breeding these guys.

    • @WildCastOutdoors

Best to wait till fry are free swimming for a few weeks before adding the shrimp. Usually the acidic breeding water eats away at the shrimp shells

Thanks for the video, I’ve tried to breed my neon tetras last week but failed, both male and female died in the setup breeding tank, my main tank is 22 degree PH around 6.5, I’ve dropped them straight to my breeding tank, which is 26 degree PH around 6, with no air stone, was that the problem? Felt really really bad.....

    • @AvatarAquatics

Hard to tell. Neons will prefer some form of acclimation. The temperature change and pH swing may have been a factor, but could also be oxygenation or stress of a new environment. Neon tetras are famous for dying
