I restored a friend's 68 Dream back in the 90's. He got it new, a red one. I have photos of him jumping it on the 44 acres my folks had back in the 70's on my Instagram. I just purchased a 72 CB500 Four that has been off the road since 76, just overhauled the carburetors, video of that coming soon. It's a period correct 70's custom, including custom flame paint. I am going to semi restore it, but have a 74 XL250 in line for restoration before the CB500. I do videos on my restorations. I restore cars, motorcycles, farm tractors and boats as I am a retired marine mechanic. One of my viewers suggested I check your channel out. I subscribed to, as I enjoy seeing your work.

I am 74 and still think about how everyone seemed to have a 305 Honda. They would take the muffler off and put a baffle kit on. One of the best sounding bikes when you opened the baffle.. My buddy got a Triumph - Now that was a bike. My first bike was a little Yamaha 80 trail bike which I had a blast on as a 15 year old riding the back roads and dirt tracks, back in 1965. Than got a deal on a 650 Honda which was just a cruising bike. Loved my trail bike though. Still kept my motorcycle license to this day. Nice watching your content brings back a lot of memories. God Bless all JC
PS: always dreamed about getting a 100cc Yamaha trail bike as a kid. Loved my Yamaha. Honda was the fad bikes back in my day, when motorcycles were the thing to get in my area.

I remember these things when they were new--it a wonderful bike when everything is right. They were very mellow, they'd idle at 7-800 rpm, they had surprisingly good low-end torque, they sounded like a little sewing machine--quiet, smooth. They didn't like high revs but they would hum along at 50 very happily. I am a Honda fan because of the wide variety of bikes and the sweetness of em.

Holy Cow Joe! 1971, when I went to Nashville to pick up that 1958 Norton 650 Nomad my Uncle passed on to me (he bought it new in Texas), I was 21 years old. My best friend, whose shop we were working on bikes in, had a 1967 Honda Dream 305 he was rebuilding. We spent 4 months, side by side, working on those bikes to get them going. I still have the Norton, I don't know if he still has that 305. I always loved the look of those bikes. So smooth and refined design.

Hey Joe a neat trick to cleaning out exhausts is get around 1m of 8-10mm wire and make the wires frayed on one end, then connect your drill to the other end. Poke the wire into the exhaust and use your drill to spin the wire around, run the wire back and forth to clean inside the muffler and pipe.

I have a 1966 CA160 in black. Just drug it out of a barn a couple weeks ago. It has 30,379 miles on it and I bought it off of the original owner. It was last registered in 1978. Someone rode the heck out of it lol. Funny thing is my tank is absolutely spotless inside which is crazy because the rest of the bike is pretty rusty. Those old Hondas will run without a battery but they will not run correctly. My CL 350 was popping and sputtering pretty bad when the battery froze.

I could see the condenser was bad when you first checked for spark and got the massive spark across the points!
I had a 1969 CD175 'sloper' many, many years ago. I bought it from a lad down the road for £7.50.
It was a frame with wheels attached, the rest of the parts were in a big cardboard box!
I put open megaphone pipes and 'ape hanger' bars on it.
Thought I was king of the road. ( I was only 17 - lol).

I had this same bike a couple years ago, they are so smooth and quiet. I agree with the sparking points being a sign of a bad condenser but it also looked like the points pivot is gummed up and not closing them up tight or the spring is weak. Another youtuber, Backyard Ballistics came up with a de rusting solution like Evaporust but 10x cheaper.
    100 grams citric acid
    40 grams Sodium Carbonate
    1 liter water
    Little bit of dish soap
I used it to clean a tank recently and overnight the tank looks brand new inside. Got everything right at Walmart. The Sodium carbonate is sold as washing soda by arm and hammer.

Vinegar dissolves rust but also the things you don't want it to dissolve. The metal also flash rusts nearly instantly after cleaning it with vinegar (yes I know you need to neutralize it). This method is significantly better, I promise. It removes a negligible amount of the parent metal and is much safer.

Hey Joe, Do YOU Remember back a number of months ago *WHEN* I Stated what another YOU TUBE Creator had been sharing as well? (IF) NOT Listen up. What If ?
As in Taking it to the next possible step. Each part / item is a Series of Checks and Balances as well. Example: Wires, Connections, Where they go to? What is then the purpose of each? 50 years ( MAN oh Man ) Alot changes from the Factory of Creation.
( YES-No-maybe) ???? PLAIN English - PLEASE. Everything is in the MIX ( REGARDLESS ) Of Looking to be fit. The KEY / Ignition ? What connections, Contacts, Points are made there ? The Wires then leading in multiple of directions. Through Clips, Wire Ties, Looms, and other Adjoining spots too. The headlight, Signals, Bulbs for gauges, Brakes and other indicators. SOUTH MAIN AUTO is the Channel who was SO KIND in Passing along the WHAT Else ( Q&A ) others had forgot about. He heard it from another Channel posting. That part YOU CLAIM ( IT ) Has to be the problem ( MAYBE)? What IF (IT) is NOT the Cause or Solution ? Where does it lead you next ? The Silly stage in the game of Parts CANNONS being Lit and Fired ( AGAIN and Again and again ) ??? Who Pays the PRICE ? Bad Crimped wire ? A poor lead that grounds out as spark is being passed along still ? What about the Rotating Assembly as a Whole ? NOT long ago YOU had a Stator or other such ISSUE that had rarely been seen as even part of the problem too ? What this message is about ? Everything in a Nut shell. ( DO NOT ) count anything out. Side Bar:
Once had a Buddy who claimed it would only take a few more bucks before his DREAM Project was up and running. He had inherited a item that was neglected LONG before he ever laid eyes on it. Plenty of Nights, Weekends, HOLIDAYS, and yes even took an entire week off of work as a Vacation to see it finally back on the road again. Each time he thought ( THIS IS THE FINAL Hurdle ) Something else would be off. A Bad wire or crimped loom of sorts, a Corroded connection that originally appeared to be completely out of the picture for sure ( N O T ) ! He was pouring his own Heart and Sole into it all. Yet, Falling WAY Short of the Right Answers and Dollars to fix it as intended. One day another person who was NOT Really close to him ( ASKED ) a Few basic questions. Each came to a Resounding ( YES-YES-YES ) Wait a second WHAT Was That You Said / Asked ?
Each point is a matter of is it or is it (NOT) Contributing or By-Passing the next in line - regardless. Remember the Bad Ground / Short - Corroded ( Broken Bulb ) Outlet story I shared with you not long ago? It was about NEXT to NOTHING. YET, Created a string of Issues the OWNERS literally were looking past as being even an option to SOLVE or Correct the Problem. SUGGESTION ( USE ) a By-Pass Wire connection for each item coming off the Ignition Switch. IN FACT ( YOU ) Should be able to REMOVE the Switch Itself from the Equation. Grounds, Broken - Cracked - Corroded connections. Inter - mittent spark, Current, Flow of what is needed on a Steady basis... I am NOT there with YOU now. YET, the Saying always REAMINS the SAME. * CHECK - DOUBLE CHECK - CHECK IT ALL OVER * AGAIN and Again and Again * Maybe just maybe the Condenser is only part of the issue YOU seem to believe it will solve or fix here? B_ U _ T _ T ( WHAT IF ) It is NOT ? Where does that then lead you ??? Today (I) saw a lot of about a little. That carb is Far from brand new. So is exactly everything else on a 50 plus year old manufacturers Dream come true here. HONDA did many things better then so many others. YET, IM-PERFECTION is also a Sign of the Times. HOW often in 50 years did everything else get tweaked, Pushed, pulled, dropped of thrown back together ??? EVEN an Item that is not moved or covered up still has demons hiding within. Clogged This, Broken That, Brittle Ready to pop apart just by brushing by it without every showing its true colors of broken or failing or barely able to keep up with all the others. PLUG WIRES, COILS, POINTS, Springs, GROUNDS, Bad Screws tying all of them together now too. SUGGESGTION. STEP Back. Look at the bike as a PUZZLE and Less like a Machine. What parts would you be able to Eliminate and still get spark or gas or some exhaust to come out at any rate ?
YOU DONT KNOW ME ( JOE ). What I DO KNOW ABOUT YOU THOUGH ??? Its easy to say ( I ) tried everything and cannot figure out what others did. (YET), still Willing to take it to the next level here. The process is to go Backwards. ( THEN ) move forward ( S L O W L Y ).
Each puzzle piece could very well be hiding Way more then YOUR Eyes alone catch at first glance. That Wire Loom throughout - perhaps. A Frayed wire grounding out in-between the many years of dust and rat piss and such ??? A kinked connection? ( ITS ) Been known to throw off even the most seasoned when it comes to Quick and Easy
( PARTS ) replacements to SOLVE a PROBLEM that was NOT there in the first place - after all...
    THE VOICE of REASON
    Has SPOKEN
    GO BACKWARDS here (JOE)
    Its the ANSWER and SOLUTION
Rolled into one - After the dust has settled
    FIFTY YEARS ago
    The INTERNET
    Was NOT a THING
Others could go and get such

Condenser is toast. Classic sign.Letting the points spark like that is gonna ruin points fast.

I don't find it odd that there's new plugs in it that haven't been run because it's common for sellers to try to get the it running before they sell and not everyone follows a logical t-shooting process

The first time I ever drove a mc was a white Honda dream 305. It was probably 1962 or 63 and I was 13 or 14 yo. You need to replace that 50+yo air cleaner too.

The condenser is the problem! The condenser is to absorb the spark when the points open to prevent/ minimize it from arching.

      I
The primary function is to generate a oscillating current trough the primary coil.
Secondary function to stop strong arcing of the points.

You added a bunch of 2-stroke oil and Marvels down the cylinders, so of course it was going to smoke for a while. I would either change the plugs or test them on your fancy machine. Maybe they're intermittent at higher rpms. It's a nice bike for $600. Did you check the oil? I don't remember seeing if you did. You might want to check the valve clearances for real, as well instead of just doing the wiggle test. You never know.

Watched a lot to reclaim bikes vidios. And no one has tried 3n1 oil to free up the pistons etc.
    Its fantastic stuff.
Rusted shut items like a strap ratchet freed uo in minutes. Try it.
I know wd on a bearing will destroy it wash out thd oil and they burn out.

These were built to run on leaded gas. You should put richer jets in the carb to run E10 or E15 gas. Non ethanol 90 octane would be good for this.
