Lyrics:
They sentenced me to twenty years of boredom
For tryin' to change the system from within
I'm coming now, I'm coming to reward them
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin
I'm guided by a signal in the heavens
I'm guided by this birthmark on my skin
I'm guided by the beauty of our weapons
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin
I'd really like to live beside you, baby
I love your body and your spirit and your clothes
But you see that line there moving through the station?
I told you, I told you, told you, I was one of those
Ah you loved me as a loser, but now you're worried that I just might win
You know the way to stop me, but you don't have the discipline
How many nights I prayed for this, to let my work begin
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin
I don't like your fashion business, mister
And I don't like these drugs that keep you thin
I don't like what happened to my sister
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin
I'd really like to live beside you, baby
I love your body and your spirit and your clothes
But you see that line there moving through the station?
I told you, I told you, told you, I was one of those
And I thank you for those items that you sent me
The monkey and the plywood violin
I practiced every night, now I'm ready
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin
(I am guided)
Ah remember me, I used to live for music (baby)
Remember me, I brought your groceries in (ooh baby yeah)
Well it's Father's Day and everybody's wounded (baby)
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin - เพลง
“You know how to stop me, but you don’t have the discipline” is just wild! 🤯
The US know how to stop Russian aggression, but hey don't have the discipline
@@jameshutchins3798 that’s an interesting view. I see it more of the devil speaking to man through his music like he has in so many other songs (we know the music industry is riddled with demonic messages and rituals) telling us you know how to stop me, but you lack the discipline. It really is a mind blowing line
9/11
He was referring to the bankers and lenders Usury system, which entraps mankind and enslaves him with debt.
The Guys Jesus evicted from the temple.
"It's Father's Day, and everybody's wounded"
Just doesn't get any better than Leonard Cohen, the man was total genius.

Some real defining messages in this song.
This is a prophecy, but it is not yet known whether it is true. I understand some words, some I did check. "The monkey and the plywood violin." Meaning: the organ grinder on the street is about American donation, charity for show, which God doesn't like.

Considering his Greek experiences and Jewish identity, perhaps Ouzo with a Manischewitz chaser is a good fit.
Love the bombastic late 80s production on this.
26 years and 4 days since, by courtesy of Nick Cave, I have heard this man and this song for the first time and nothing was the same afterwards... Cohen knew the truth, and knew how to tell it.
This was the first song by Mr. Cohen that I heard. It was on a Father's Day several years ago. The line "Well is father's day and everybody's wounded" stuck in my mind, I wished many years were to come until it was relevant to me. 7 months ago my dear father passed away; Leonard Cohen now. It's been a dark year... thankfully the 'crack' through which the light gets in is my 5-month son and my 10-month nephew, called Leonardo. They'll hear about their grandpa and Leonard's music, I'll make sure.

Cohen explained himself in a backstage interview at 1988:"I think it means exactly what it says. It is a terrorist song. I think it's a response to terrorism. There's something about terrorism that I've always admired. The fact that there are no alibis or no compromises. That position is always very attractive. I don't like it when it's manifested on the physical plane - I don't really enjoy the terrorist activities - but Psychic Terrorism. I remember there was a great poem by Irving Layton that I once read, I'll give you a paraphrase of it. It was 'well, you guys blow up an occasional airline and kill a few children here and there', he says. 'But our terrorists, Jesus, Freud, Marx, Einstein. The whole world is still quaking.'"

MY MAN IS BEYOND APOLOGIES!!!
Your man? Always my man. Creature, what do you think you are?
Written by a bad mind with maybe a bad ass. But what should I say? Not my problem. His problem. Don't search my proximity again, you snake
This was my introduction to Mr. Cohen's work, when I was a teen in the 1980's, listening cross-border to CFNY 102.1 out of Toronto (when the radio station and music actually mattered) as a small-town kid in Western New York.
His death was not unexpected, but it sill comes as a deep sadness heaped upon an already sad week and year.
My dad used to have an old cfny 102.1 sticker i think it said "Spirit of the Radio" I grew up listening to that station in the mid 90s they called it 102.1 the edge my sister helped me tune my first radio to it she told me there was 2 edge radio stations 102.1 toronto and 103.3 buffalo and that we should listen to the canadain station. Both were great radio stations i used to love listening to humble and fred in the morning before school and the thursday 30 countdown when all those alternative rock bands were still knew and fresh. Never heard cohen on the edge it was am740 were i first heard this song a few years ago and i feel i love with it instantly 🤘
I'm heartbroken that I only found Leonard recently! In a few days I felt I'd watched him live and die! What a strange way to mourn! His deep political poetry is comforting as hell! Then he sings a Sweet little love song with a subtle touch of raw sex! IF YOU WANT A DOCTOR! OMG! HE WAS SPECIAL!!
