I thought you were older buddy. When u were born I was a full grown man. My first amplifier was given to me in 79-80. In 1986 I got my first davemade from dave.
Wow that is really cool man.... I would love to do some interviews with people like you some time that was around at that time.....how it was to buy an amp back then like how did you pay? Money order or check etc... really cool to hear those old stories....I have a davemade from that time I repaired ill be releasing the video soon.
@@1883GotDown well yeah man me and Dave go back. However this is before the so called internet time. So basically in that time you either knew the engineer in Dave's case or you knew the tech in other's case. I always drove my ass to Dave's place and he always put the amp in my hands. Some did use ups and so forth bit I always dealt with him 1 on 1. Even when I got amps for other's I would just drive to him and back with a shitload of amps. No internet just telephone in those days. No social media. If you didn't know the builder or didn't know a friend that did then you didn't get an amp. I can remember paying like $3 - $4 fir toshibas. I remember dave bought such a large batch once they were down to .99 a pill. He kept them in a big barrel at back of his shop. Send me back there to pull out a bunch. Good old days.... 😆 🤣 😂
That a neat kit amp. Hard to remember back that far. There was amp kits like that in HAM magazine . That bord may be photo etched . I was doing that in the 80's from school projects. I still have a bunch of stud mount transistors. MRF 449/450/454/455/492/421 and some others. I got a nice old amp with 4 -MRF 453A pills. They used same input transformers and out put for the splitter and combiner. Is AB bias with 1N4997 press into heat sink. no pre amp. has filter board. SSB delay . got it on trade. 3 pole relay hard to find. replaced mica caps . working great. easy does 225 watt PEP on SSB. now that tuned circuit 1 pill has small band of operation. That may have ben 10 meters . why the coils were off. I had a Palomar 50 with MRF 450A come threw . had to tune and play with coil to work 11 meters. If you use ferrite cores it will brood band better but drop the power a bit. you can use a splitter as a input transformer. just re do winding. the 2 windings that come together go to ground. in a splitter it's the input. one winding is input outher goes threw cap to base. just match 50 ohm to transistor. you can do same for out put but heaver wire . collector current. when you use push-pull transformers for 2 pills on 1 pill you loose some RF from un used side. I sent pic of 50V MOSFET . That does 100 watts RMS from 10 to 11 meters. That 4 pill stud mount amp has DSS on it and has gold big heat sink . also has illegal for CB use. on it. it's on my RCI 2950 from 1990 has dual finals and LCD display. My newer 2950DX has blue LED display and goes 24.8 to 32 Mhz. the old one only 26 to 29.999 mhz. The new one has FET's output. does way more power but turned it way down. 1/2 to 10 watt dead key AM/FM 4 to 20 PEP SSB. that how I set my range of power. 73's
I did something almost exactly like that in 1990's in H.S. for my RCI2950. It started with super high hfe MRF455 then went to MRF421 then went to transformer broad band 2xMRF455 again super high hfe. All versions bolted to the back of my RCI2950. 18 feet of coax and 102" whip with a 6inch aluminum bar to get the antenna away from my SUV and get me to an electrical length of 108". I photo etched all my boards. This was back when you could run to RadioShack and pick up anything you might need before they turned into a cellphone and cheap Chinese made toy store! Way to work that all out on the job! Impressive! I had help in H.S.!
What a cool looking little amp! I would have been lost as a Thanksgiving Turkey on that repair. I wonder how it ever worked at all without the keying circuit?
Only way it could have worked is if he had an external switching circuit setup but I honestly think it was a kit to build for fun but that still doesn't make a lot of sense to me.... I may just release the second one after this since I'm on the subject and all lol. But that is a real good question.
That cool.....I once saw a real davemade 3 pill ...not a 1x2...but a a real 3pill...just 3 2879s no transformers. Just tuned Circuit something like your video...
Oh my id love love love to see that.....wow if you could find the images again and send them to me at threemanpro at gmail that would be sweet....... I have seen a davemade base amp where he made the power supply switch mode home brew in amp....he is amazing man and is not in line light lol....crazy
What sucks man is ur the first to ever mention that and I have had the idea to do that for many years and imma try it soon.... now I know someone has done it...I shud have known it would be Dave lol.
The bad part is... I don't have pictures I saw it with my own eyes..... It was someone That was in the davemade camp showed it to me...... But Hey yeah Give it a go... Make a real 3 pill no Transformers tuned circuit
I have a Skywave DX250 that is a tuned circuit narrow band single MRF454 that will give me 200w RMS out with 10w RMS in on AM. It gives me 280w PEP on SSB with far less than it's max input of 40w PEP. That is at 13.8 volts with tiny 12 gauge power wire. That one is only good on 26Mhz-28Mhz. If I want to talk on all of HF+6m I have to step up to a transformer design that is broad band which means at least a 2 pill to make it worthwhile!
I am not taking in repairs right now I have to get caught up but be watching my channel because I will make a video when I start taking in repairs again.
I built 1 similar to it in 73', it also had a relay to key it from within. I have lost it know. Do you have a schematic for it? Or know of a book that would have one?
I'm sorry I dont....a customer sent me this for repair....Id love to know where it came from also. I love learning history about these older amps. Thanks for stopping by the channel.
2 main reasons Blown pill or high swr on your output Most common is blown pills sorry bud. But not always. That shud be a 100 ohm 2w but some people use higher wattage resistors..... if you need replacement pills text me at 678 557 4846 and ill help you out...you can also send me images of the amp to that number ill look at the board for you
Hey can you make me a 2 pill ssb only amp for my ICOM 7300. It is a 100 watt radio. I would like to run it with 100 watts into the amp is that possible? Thank you sir!
Of course that would be a cool amplifier build. Would this be a 10m or 11m? You may qualify for my side program in doing with the GF well talk more text me later on 678 557 4846
Good work. Thanks for the teaching !
Np big brother

Wow, I have never seen an amp like that one. But it is not too bad at all on power.
Very Cool,
Tec. Thank you.

I have a tri also works well
I'd love to see this amp....don't think I have ever heard of it.
73’s, TWO BEAUTIES RITE THERE. 🙃🙃
Indeed James indeed...thanks for stopping by bud.

I want to see this for my self bad....my first try wasn't successful....I only for 100w rms. Ive gotta revisit it again soon.
Good video gatekeeper ! Enjoyed it. Now... how do we get a hold of you for an amp repair.
I am not taking in repairs right now I have to get caught up but be watching my channel because I will make a video when I start taking in repairs again.

You young a spring chicken. In 86 I was 15. Just picking bud.
Lol wow yes I was man that is crazy
Hey on a 6pill of hgs .. the combiner went up in smoke why would that happen and what watt and ohms do u use for the combiner
2 main reasons
Blown pill or high swr on your output

I can't find a MRF455A, but I CAN find a MRF455. Even at a parts search site it could not be found! Don't know the difference.
MRF455A is stud mount and MRF455 mounts with screws. Whenever you see the A that means stud and yes it is almost impossible to find.

New Old Stock might look pretty young but it's just back dated. Yeah.
Lol true that bud
86! I was already married with a kid on the way. 😳
Dang man you either got starter super early or you may be a bit further along then the ole GK lol lol. Which is it 🤔 lol just picking at cha
