This man cannot cook as he does not know the difference between Shepherd's Pie and Cottage Pie. This is typical US not know how BS. Most of the recipe is incorrect. NEVER TRY TO MAKE SOMETHING FROM A DIFFERENT CULTURE UNLESS YOU ABSOLUTELY KNOW THAT WHAT YOU ARE PRODUCING IS RIGHT. The onion should be cooked first then set aside then the meat should be cooked with pepper and salt - but nothing like he added which was far too much. Then flour should be sprinkled over the meat and allowed to cook with the meat. (This is used to make and thicken the gravy.) The liquid should be allowed to evaporate while the meat is cooking. so why follow an incompetent. Originally, in the UK where I am from and where this recipe originated, we never added paprika. Made this as PBJ instructed but made 3 tweaks. 1. I used ground beef and ground pork 2. I thoroughly drained the meat. 3. I added Liipton Beefy onion soup mix to the meat as it browned. That egg yolk really made a difference in the potatoes. Oh man, this was soooooo good and even better the next day!
Hi, I have tried this too and it was my first time making this cottage pie. My husband and kids love it. Thank you for sharing this recipe. Greetings from Singapore. 🇸🇬
As an ex-pat Brit what you have made is actually a Cottage Pie. Shepherds Pie is always, always made with lamb - Shepherds Pie. Secondly Worcestershire as in the sauce is simply pronounced as Wus-ter-sheer. It looks great - will definitely try it
From Bulgarian perspective this has the traits of moussaka, albeit different of course. But in essence it's a very bizarre sort of moussaka. I don't know if this is the normal way how Americans do mash potatoes, but the Bulgarian way is 10 times simpler. Probably not that tasty, but simpler, nonetheless.
Beef = cottage pie Lamb = shepherds pie And in Scotland it's Wooster shirt sauce not so much herbs and spices I would only add 2 * oxo* cubes and add carrot onions, peas leave to cool slowly till thickens slightly add some bid to or gravy granules. Put into oven proof dish top it off with layer of mashed potatoes place in oven till mashed potatoes are slightly brown ENJOY.
While I was watching it I'm thinking , he's gonna drain it and OMG he didn't ! Like you I would drain it, but I would leave a little bit for flavor. I also would use frozen peas (they stand up better) and have fresh carrot with fresh corn off the cob if in season, but frozen corn on the cob works too. Fresh veggies are the best in it. Have never tried the cr.cheese in it, debating on that, also the parm ch. Do like the yolk in mash pots. I haven't made Shep pie in yearzzz Philly Boy's looks great though. My Mom used to make it sometimes with bacon in it. She'd fry it separate and break it up and would put 2-3 tbls bacon grease into the hamburger when cooking it, bacon was added when cooking meat is complete and save some for the top, that was back in the 60-70's. But she also would drain almost all of the grease off the meat. Here's a good tip if onions are really liked in your family before putting the pots on top sprinkle with raw chopped onions on top then the pots. My family wanted a really good sprinkling, the onions do cook but still have a nice crunch. I have also made with chic instead of the hamburger. I'd cook the chicken and then shred while I cooked the veggies with seasoning and juice from 2 cans stewed tomatoes. Chic gets added after season veggies and st. toms juice has reduced to about I/2, less or more depends on how much gravy you like, add cornstarch slurry before veggies are done, let thicken simmer a bit more before continuing. Don't want veggies to turn to mush. Veggies will finish cooking in oven. You can omit adding Tom's all together and use only juice I'd take only 2-4 Tom's and chop into sm. pieces (would add Tom's when mixture is taken off the stove). Let it thicken (before adding chic+toms)and simmer a bit for flavors to marry. Remove from heat, add chic+toms let it sit to marry together for 20-30 mins. Put pots on and cook in oven at 350° for about 30-40 mins, want pots to have a nice crust, can put under broiler to finish off crusting so as not to overcook if not browned+crusty to your liking. Hope I explained it well enough haven't made this in a long time. Happy cooking !!! ☮️🙏💜
This was so bomb!!! Thank you so much for sharing. That cream cheese made it so good. I added the flour to the meat, let the fat absorb the flour and then add the water(cold water). It’s sorta similar to making green chili (texture wise).

What was the method for using the crescent rolls 🤔 because I was totally thinking "a crust would be divine" 😍😍😍🙌👌💯 did you cook it partially first or 🤷

I dont think anyone is sleeping on his skills. It's very apparent that he can cook and is talented. However, the correction on "shepherd's pie" and "cottage pie" is correct. Someone from the country in which the dish originated would know the dish and I'm sure PhillyboyJay being a true cook appreciates the corrections. True cooks always do.☺☺☺ A word of advice for you ladies. Try to be subjective and not such a groupie...👍👍👍
The name matters. Here in Australia if a cook tried to pass off a shepherd's pie without any sheep meat in (We have lots of sheep) he would be laughed out of the kitchen.
What a great looking shepherd’s pie. What a great idea to add cream cheese and egg yolk to the spuds. I didn’t realize you could add frozen peas and carrots to it. Thats one step ill be able to eliminate from now on. I will comment again when Ive trued it. Thanks for a great video!

I made it, but I always use the high ground beef percentage, so I did 93/7, and it was superb! Delicious! Thankyou! 😊Just to say, I used liquid beef broth so it was not dry. 😊
Hey PhillyBoyJay!!! I just made this today from how you showed me and I was Off The Chain!!! I’m so happy. I followed your recipe for the turkey on Thanksgiving and it was🔥!!! It was so good that I got a request from my Momma to do another turkey for Christmas and I did it just like you taught me and it turned out amazing!!! Keep up the good work because your a BLESSING!!!!
Looks like the best Shepherds Pie I have seen. (We have always called this Shepherds Pie. Right or wrong, who cares?). Can’t wait to try it! Belly is growling right now!
Made it today-very yummy-sent some to my friends family, they really enjoyed it. Also gave some to my dog and he liked it so much, he flipped his dish over in case there was some more under it! I like this recipe too....also, very easy to prepare. PS: Worse-stir- sheer is how it’s pronounced 🙂
This is the way my Mom made it- and she called it Shepherd's Pie too... ( I would never correct my Mom.) Thumb's up PhillyBoyJay. 👍🏼 I don't get the big- argument over calling it Cottage Pie. We don't herd sheep/ lamb much in the US. lols...
My grandparents were born in Ireland. My mom made Shepard's pie from the leftovers from a roast beef dinner. Mom made the best gravy from everything she cooked ( fried chicken, beef roast, meatloaf...) you name it. Mom used the leftover sliced beef, veggies. mashed potatoes and gravy. I'm looking forward to making your version with ground beef. Also, I make a mashed potatoes with cream cheese, sour cream, minced garlic, thinly sliced green onion and a pad of butter and paprika sprinkled on top.
Well, you are the first person that has ever mentioned how Shepherds Pie or Cottage Pie is made and that is, from the left over meat from the Sunday Roast. Nice to know, knowledge is still out there.

use a medium sweet potatoe with the rest of the taters and it adds the same sweet and makes for a nice mix of flavour as well ... and drop all but 1 tsp of the salt ... BUT cook the taters in heavily salted water ... strain and drain and then dry in the pot with a tbls spoon of salted butter (NOT MARGARINE) .... and use parsnips and rhutebegga instead of the peas and what not ... top with diced scallions and wild garlic leaves ... and you have an awesome dish ... also use Mutton or lamb ... as it is SHEPPARD's Pie ... not Cattleman's pie ... no sheppard ever looked after beef ... that's a herdsman ...
Dianna Champ. Exactly! From where in the world does he take the idea to put in sugar in his mashed potatoes?! Ppl place sugar everywhere...it's not even a joke what they do!
PBJ note 1/4 tsp of baking soda added when cooking the potatoes makes them incredibly fluffy, try it next time you make mashed, you'll be surprised. Also (not to be rude), the original recipe (Irish) called for ground mutton which gives you the "sheep" part of "shepherds". (They couldn't afford beef back then). However that is old school and I prefer beef by far, as sheep is very gamy, many people call the beef version "cottage pie" Awesome recipe though.
How did it turn out? I'm thinking about making it to. But by the comments idk if I need to drain the meat to avoid it being greasy or not. I might drain about half of it bc I'm so unsure)
I love your excitement and expression when you cook...lotsa love goin in there...this shepherdds pie is very similar to my own...but I'm gonna try the cream cheese in my mash....SOUNDS DELICIOUS!!!
I tried your recipe with a little spin on it and it was so bomb! Plus I added a little shredded cheese & replaced the ketchup with tomatoe sauce yum, delicious. No, just skip you're sweet, if you're worried about calories,

It's actually a mixture of fat and the moisture that is naturally occuring in the meat along with the moisture added by the store or butcher.

This is the bomb I will never make shepherd's pie any other way than this.. So glad I found you
Made that an hour ago. Went step by step with you. Came out awesome thanks for explaining so easy. Taste was awesome
Looks so good 😊
You are very likable. And also love Shepherds Pie! Mom. Great recipe.
I made it, but I always use the high ground beef percentage, so I did 93/7, and it was superb! Delicious! Thankyou! 😊Just to say, I used liquid beef broth so it was not dry. 😊
I wanted to make something different. I came across this video. Never made this before. It came out sooooo good. Very delicious. Thank you
Call it what you want, that looks like a great meal to me ...Thanks PBJ ... this does look like THE BEST!

Hi Phillyboy I made your shepherd pie like I said I would do. Off the chain. So flavorful. Thanks for saving dinner.
It was good even though my grave was not thick like urs I try it again
Carol Ming .... He actually made COTTAGE PIE because he used BEEF. Shepherd's pie is made with LAMB...
By whatever name you wish to call it it looks absolutely delicious. I'll definitely try it. Thanks Philly for sharing.

Thank you
5 STARS. I've tried most your recipes and they are my go-to. You're great cook. Keep it ip
Love to add shredded cheese on top of the mashed before baking. I can't wait to try your version.
This is the way my Mom made it- and she called it Shepherd's Pie too... ( I would never correct my Mom.) Thumb's up PhillyBoyJay. 👍🏼
I don't get the big- argument over calling it Cottage Pie. We don't herd sheep/ lamb much in the US. lols...
The only video I watch for certain recipes. Where are you? I miss you. Hope all is well with you ❤🫶🏼
I have made this so many times! This is the Best and Easy to make. Bonus is You. Love your style. ❤
I’ve made yours twice in a week! Family loves it!!
OMG YES I LOVE YOUR RECIPES . YOU ARE THE REASON MY FAMILY SAY I CAN COOK NOW LOL

I have been making traditional mashed potatoes for years not anymore.I will be making your s from now on.delicous.😊
The only thing I would skip about this recipe, would be the Sugar..... But other than that, this DISH LOOKS AMAZING!!!
use a medium sweet potatoe with the rest of the taters and it adds the same sweet and makes for a nice mix of flavour as well ... and drop all but 1 tsp of the salt ...
Or perhaps a big old dollop of honey...?
I think.i would skip the cream cheese, that's gross and drain the grease and omit the sugar.
@@diannachamp5403 lol really?? I feel that the cream cheese would give it a nice creamy zesty flavour. I probably wouldn't use too much of it through
Dianna Champ.
However that is old school and I prefer beef by far, as sheep is very gamy, many people call the beef version "cottage pie"
Awesome recipe though.
paul ducharme and
Deez?
Made you’re Shepherds pie several times very good and you are a funny cook😆
paul ducharme p
Do you also add beef broth in your ground beef or just flour and water? I can't decide which one i should use
-Soo I literally just bought ALL the ingredients to make this tomorrow. Can’t wait to try this !!!
How did it turn out? I'm thinking about making it to. But by the comments idk if I need to drain the meat to avoid it being greasy or not. I might drain about half of it bc I'm so unsure)
EVERYONE IN MY FAMILY LOVES THIS SHEPARDS PIE!! FANTASTIC!! LOVE IT!!!
I love your excitement and expression when you cook...lotsa love goin in there...this shepherdds pie is very similar to my own...but I'm gonna try the cream cheese in my mash....SOUNDS DELICIOUS!!!

LOL She went home from dinner with the youtube address to make it herself for her church pot luck the folowing Sunday.
