    You can’t love your neighbor as yourself and keep them in bondage, especially if the slave does not want to be enslaved. You can’t say that you are treating your neighbors as yourself, unless you want to be enslaved just as they are, and would chose for yourself, or your children the same fate.

      But to work while having neighbors work for you ( and both you and them satisfied working for the Lord ) and each other. That's Biblical.

    I am not woke, nor do I support the liberal agenda. I understand differentiating between the type of slaveowners who treated their people like cattle, and those who treated them in the order of a patriarchal family. And I want to note that I admire and revere Doug Wilson as a leader and Shepherd in the Body of Christ. In fact I’m reading “When the Man Comes Around” right now and I’m blown away. My question though would be this - if the TransAtlantic slave trade was predicated on “man stealing” would we use the same “master/slave” NT references? Meaning, let’s say someone stole your daughter in today’s time and age. Wouldn’t you go rescue her? You wouldn’t go to the thief and say “well she’s your property now!” And I would differentiate between this and indentured servitude, or paying off a debt.

    Excellent blog!! Honestly, I can't believe Canon Press hasn't been banned for hate speech yet haha but this analysis of Edwards is SPOT ON. We need to study whether or not Edwards was Biblical before we condemn him by today's standards.

      I mean, today people condemn homosexuals because they place genital organs inside other human orifices, but slave owners who treated people like objects are going to heaven? How does being a slave owner goes along with: Love your neighbor as yourself? Please enlighten me.

      Today's standards? It's obvious you know nothing of the true doctrine of the Gospel. The only notion of the Gospel you apparently have is the Western version of things. The true Gospel is not secular, meaning the doctrine is immutable (doesn't accommodate with time [or places]). You so-called Westerners are pagans anyway with your Christmas, Santa Clause, no matter how much you would like to believe such are the Gospel, too.

    Why doesn’t 1 Corinthians 5:11 apply to Edwards?

  • @bmide1110
    @bmide1110 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Some questions:
    Was slavery race-based in the time of the Bible? My understanding was that it was not.
    Are there not scriptural passages that imply that a fully loving response of slave masters to their slaves would be to free their slaves? (Philemon 15-16, 1 Corinthians 7:21)
    I am not saying that it is explicitly and universally commanded in Scripture. But there seem to be in these passages the groundwork for the unraveling of any system of slavery. And especially a system of slavery that was race-based and mightily oppressive. Even if Edwards was kind and not oppressive towards his slaves, could he not have done more (I.e. free his own slaves, for a start) to end a so-clearly destructive system?

    • @Christian-vq8rd
      @Christian-vq8rd 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah. He could have. No doubt slavery was minimally a blind spot. I also agree that the Bible both does not condemn slavery, but also lays the groundwork for dismantling slavery, racism (which historically may or may not have been involved at different periods- a lot of slavery during Biblical times was race based or at least there was great divisions amongst races and it was often acted upon), etc., by its teaching on all humans being created in God's image.

    • @thetruthshed
      @thetruthshed 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Perhaps he considered that freeing them may have led them to be less free by exposing them to oppression by others or being more harshly enslaved by another who wouldn't treat them as human.

    • @janszeneri3572
      @janszeneri3572 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It evolved largely into a race based slavery, but it did start out that way, nor was the institution of slavery in the US 100% race based, even in the 1860’s.
      An excellent book is by Tim Hayshaw called The Birth of Black America.
      Thomas Sowell has some excellent audio on the subject here on TH-cam.
      Finally, go to the Library of Congress online n read the Slave Narratives yourself.
      The Angolan slave trade took off for two reasons -
      First, the Muslims cut the white slave route from Eastern Europe.
      Second, the mines of South America went into full swing at the same time.

      Slavery wasn't based on hatred for a supposedly inferior race in the times prior to what the Europeans practiced in the Americas.

  • @martiva
    @martiva 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You really can’t dress up sin, put a pretty bow on it to say it okay because one participant was nice and the other was evil. If Edwards had good intentions, he could have freed the slaves and THEN offer them a a choice to stay by offering them a living wage to either work his land. It restores dignity and pride to a man when he is able to provide food and clothing for his family himself rather than taking it from the table of a man that has him in bondage. 1 Timothy 5:18 “ the laborer deserves his wages”
    I seriously doubt if John Edwards would’ve wanted to be enslaved to a “good master” if it were the other way around.

      I am happy to be a slave to Christ. And I suspect Edwards would be as well. Cheers! :)

      @@zapazap However, Edwards was practicing and happily defending slavery that was based on hatred for a race that was supposedly regarded as inferior and inhuman. Here you are defending that wicked white supremacist slave master and fervent supporter of human trafficking. How about the females in your family getting trafficked? May that be your curse!

    • @SteveGayMusic

      Not actually removed from the canon by God, but I assume he means those are the epistles that the liberal and progressive left want to remove for the reasons stated.
