Pagosa Springs is a small town that is currently home to 2000 people in southwest Colorado. It’s surrounded by the San Juan Mountains, the san Juan river, and different national forests. In the winter you can easily get to Wolf Creek Pass for skiing.
Pagosa Springs sits high in the San Juan Basin, where the high desert plateau to the west meets the Rocky Mountains, and adjacent to the 3-million-acre San Juan National Forest to the north and east.
Located about 15 miles northeast of Pagosa Springs off U.S. Highway 160 you’ll find Treasure Falls.
The falls are somewhat visible from the parking lot, and it is a short and moderately steep hike of about 300 feet with 91 m of elevation gain. You’ll come up to a foot bridge for viewing or you can go even closer to the base.
There are two trail options with one being simple and easy while the other is a “primitive” trail which has more hills but was pretty easy to hike.
Treasure Falls Trail is a 0.6 mile heavily trafficked loop trail located near Pagosa Springs, Colorado that features a waterfall and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, and snowshoeing and is best used from May until November. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
Opal Lake is a 2.3 mile out and back hike. A portion of the trail has a slight incline before you stumble upon groves of Aspen trees. You then come to an open meadow which leads you right to the lake.
The continental divide is a 3,100 Mile trail that stretches from South America to Alaska in North America. It is one of the most significant trail systems in the world because it separates the watersheds that drains into the Pacific Ocean from those river systems that drain into the Atlantic Ocean. From the Wolf Creek Pass rest stop on US 160 you can either go north on the continental divide and take a 5 mile hike to the lookout or drive to the top and pick it up from that point.
If you go souther from the rest stop you hike into Wolf Creek Pass which is a ski resort and leads you to Alberta’s Peak
When It comes to breweries I like Riff Raff on the Rio the best. They had a lot of beers that were brewed in house with a variety of flavors and provided a nice view on the river.
