I’m now going through a personal crisis of a) if I want a synth in this specific price range and b) if I would choose between this, Take 5 and UB-Xa. I certainly can’t get all three.
sounds lush. well spec'd synth. so nice to see this in a smaller size. glad we're seeing more oberheim stuff. truly unique sounding synths. so musical.
Okay. I'm fairly certain I like this more than the OB-X8... Curious. Either way, I've been an Oberheim fan for decades. I'm glad to see Tom getting the love he deserves.
Ooooooh! The mod matrix gives it the special quality of the Matrix 6R and Xpander modules. Really a feast to use that. And you've got the F.M., well sort of, and original Oberheim quality as well. An interesting synth, although pretty outside my budget these days i fear. And at this moment there are so many interesting synths out there. But this one will be on my wish-in-case-of-better-financial-times list for sure, and the Matrix 6R would have to go for that (having two DCO's that are phase locked). Thanks to both of you so for showing this video.
The case wings remind me of my Sequential Circuits synth and it even sounds similar. While some may like the black wings on the ends I still like the wood on my Sequential Circuits. The case shape makes me wonder if the entire panel is hinged to open up for servicing like the Sequential Circuits synths?
That's interesting! Seems nice in terms of tactile control because of the knobs and dials. How does the workflow compare to the TAKE-5? That reverb and tape delay sound super nice!
I only sold my Take 5 for a P5, I really liked the take 5 though and was looking to get an ob6 module again , but I think I would prefer this with the mod matrix. I’d rather have the mix section than an fx though.
It sucks that, as a working musician, this is what is "affordable" for an Oberheim poly. Of course analog synths are not easy to manufacture well, so I get it. But damn. I just can't justify it right now.
The ob6 has those thin sounding prophet 6 oscillators whereas from what I understand this has original oberheim SEM style oscillators which sound much meatier to me imo. I will miss the shimmer my old ob6 desktop had though
@@ThePCxbox Hi, the Teo 5 uses the same oscillator chips as the Take 5 - the SSI 2130 (another reason why it's capable of doing Through-Zero FM, even though that ability wasn't utilised on the Take 5). The OB6 has discrete circuit oscillators designed exclusively for the OB6. The ONLY similarity between the P6 and the OB6's oscillators, is that one element of the oscillator was a "lift" from the Prophet 6's discrete oscillator, which was merely just for the sine wave, so nothing in common other than that.
So it's like an updated Take5 sold for 1700 euros on Thomann right now, I'd rather get a Rev2 for this price, it seems there's some deep menu diving but I hope I'm wrong, let's wait the full review by Nick
@@xfghffhfg It is also only 5 Voices and doesn't sound as good to me I mean I just played it twice over the last 3 days at Superbooth so say what you like. yes get it if you want a 5 voice Oberhiem its great but I´m not selling my OB6 for it at all.
@@nagchumpalot From the demo i heard it sounds really great, but this is from people that had time to learn it, its very different playing a new instrument in a show. I'm sure its different from the ob6, this is good too. So you saying twice in three days? 🤔
Agree with you there. Very likely nothing will sound like the classic OB 4 SEM or OB 8 SEM voice synths, as they were fully analog and each module is slightly different from the others. Since Tom did an article about that some years ago, i really would have liked to hear that in this demo, or at least a comparison to the recent OBX8. They really did not convince me that the sound is anywhere near that of the classic Oberheims. On the other hand i think this was a decent introductory video, covering all the other things this synth can do. In about 15 minutes without disturbing background noise, which is rare for a typical Namm, Superbooth or Anaheim convention.
@@agerven Yes, the video quality is very good. And btw, after just now listening to most of the musical examples of the Dr. Mix vid, again it sounds decent, but not.... classic OB. Kind of wasted the classic esthetics on this one also.
Yes, the TEO-5 sounds great. No, the TEO-5 got a display. A display that displays minimal information about parameters seems to be useless for me. In the Focusrite Group there are Summit and Peak from Novation. And both synthesisers offer excellent sounds AND an excellent UI. Every single parameter change (slider or knob) is displayed as "new" and "previous" value (and then switches back to the former display content). That´s what I expect from an "intelligent" UI. Even an "old" Access Virus Darkstar (TI2) offers this kind of display. So I really don´t understand why more modern synthesisers ignore such a useful feature. Maybe a big firmware update might resolve this issue.
@@xfghffhfg After watching several videos about the TEO-5 I couldn´t recognise any display changes when users are changing parameter values (e.g. cutoff frequency). Maybe I´m wrong.
Interesting, I may be wrong about that, I don't think "modern synthesisers ignore" that, all my dsi synths (and many others do that), it's kind of basic (there is a little dot on the take5 that shows when you "picked up" the value) I can see why some people actually prefer that, maybe it's a design decision but it would be better to have the option to turn it on, maybe it's just something that will be fixed in future OS updates.
I prefer the possibility of modulating almost any parameter with FM frequencies and through zero. So much more going on there than just compering the sound of osc's or filters, for me it's like comparing a 101 to a complete 100 system. This is so much more interesting, also compared to other oberheim. I rather just get a pat midi keyboard
The Take 5 is an incredible synth and is underrated. I'm glad they decided to make an oberheim in this form. I have to get it!
Gas is strong for the Take 5 indeed
As an owner of an OB6 and an OB-X8, I don't need this, but glad it exists, everyone in the world should own an Oberheim!
Yeah, I’ve got the TVP and the OB-X8. I’m a bit gassed out. 😅
I doubt I'll ever save up for one, but goddamn they are the best synths.
As an owner of an OB-X8, Minimoog, and a Prophet 10, I wholeheartedly agree 😅

Awaiting Jexus to get his hands on one to see what it can do that hasnt been heard a million times! It does sound lovely though
Killer sound, and part of me favors Oberheim over Sequential. But - where does TEO-6 stop and Take 5 begin?
Really great bang for your buck. I think I will need to sell my Casio CZ-1 and a few others and pick one of these up.
Hm, tempting. Sounds beautiful. Would pair very nicely with a Take 5
