KARIRI
Kariri! Ka riri te rangi e
Te Rura rere mai ki au i Rangiriri e
Kariri! Kariri, ka rere te matā
Hau ana mai te rongo ki Hikurangi e
Kariri, kariri, kariri e…
Hau - ana te tuki
Hau - ana te whana
Hau - e kore piri, e kore e tata
Kariri, ka riria te aukati
Te Kaokaoroa - ka puta ki Maketu
Kariri! Ka riri, ka ngāngana!
Pūrepo pāha i raro ki Te Ranga - aue…
Kariri, kariri, kariri e…
Hau - ana te tuki
Hau - ana te whana
Hau - e kore piri, e kore e tata
(Korihi)
(REO TAUIWI)
Bullets! Anger the heavens
As Te Rura tears towards me from Rangiriri
Bullets! Bullets recherché
Heard even upon Hikurangi
The deafening sound of their ammunition
Striking - in attack
Striking - in revolt
Unity will not be achieved
Bullets! The blockade is broken
At Te Kaokaoroa - force your way to Maketu
Bullets! The face grimaces with rage
Canons explode upon Te Ranga
The deafening sound of their ammunition
Striking - in attack
Striking - in revolt
Still unity is not achieved
I march upon the path to Pukehinahina
I attack, I revolt upon Pukehinahina
My heart races upon Pukehinahina
I am enraged as I turn my gaze to Waerenga-a-Hika
I see such great loss, so much loss
I am enraged…

This man's voice is incredible! Love from Canada.
he is a well known NZ singer from the northern part of the northern island. the depicted incident reflects a battle in the early days of the post treaty world where the natives realized that they were not so happy calling this London queen their true head of state rather than someone only to swear power and authority to.
yes I'm still here
such a lovely powerful song I am so thankful to have a great mother from Auckland New Zealand and i'm so grateful for me to be Kiwi I am happy and very proud of the country so inspiration
I've ended up here searching for native music of my tribe. Kariri is the name of my native brazilian ethnye. LOL
Kariri in the Maori language translates to cartridge or bullet. This song refers to historic battles of the New Zealand land wars. Its is actually empowering to hear this song for Maori, to spark an interest of what happened at these battles. I get emotional myself. As this song is telling a history our (white) education system tried to cover up. Pukehinahina. The Aukati line. Te Waerenga a hika. And the video with the revered mountain/maunga, Hikurangi. Wow.
Interesting. We had the same problem in brazil, and most of my ancestral culture have been erased by christianity imposition, the Kariri Confederation War/Barbarian Wars was the biggest indigenous resistance in brazil, the war lasted about 100 years, but also brazilian history never talk about it or what they did with our ancestors.
Nice song anyway. Total support for Maori, and all original people who want to preserve their culture.
Interesting to know about all this. Kariri is actually a tribe in Saudi Arabia, and we use our tribe name as a last name.
So sad, this band is so amazing and so underradet. Love from Germany
Ataahua Puthawai 💖 reincarnated in Germany as mixed italian. Thanks to our grace, Europe had not to carry this Karma of these bloody wars. We decided to leave our hearts open in peace✋ thanks to the great spirit🙌
Wow beautiful waiata - now I miss Tokomaru Bay and the coast

Stunning, love the epic production. (and your gentler songs too). Great production , everyone. Met you in Guam. Tim from Small Island, Big Song.
he tino pai tou waiata ruha. ka rongo au i o waiata i nga wa katoa
This would make a good movie soundtrack
it would be one hell of a movie. War historians question the failure of Commonwealth troops to accept a tactic where history has proven would have been close to "trench warfare" of the first Great War.
ke rawe the visuals are excellent
Miharo e hika! te ataahua o runga i ou kahui maunga

Aue! Ka mau ke te wehi o tenei waiata.
I'm empowered. This is awesome
he was arrested for a while in 2011 for a misunderstanding over an anti-police US rap song.

Were the statues erected for the video or are they real? I would love to visit them if they were....providing they aren't tapu to the local iwi or anything.
"IN 1999 Toihoukura, the arts department of the Tairāwhiti Polytechnic, under the tutelage of Derek Lardelli, was commissioned by Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Porou to produce a set of carvings that would be installed on Hikurangi to commemorate the dawning of the new millennium in the year 2000. The installation, entitled “Māui Whakairo”, is made up of eight carved pou (free-standing sculptures) arranged in a circle around the central feature piece of Māui-tikitiki-a-Taranga."

Nice song
wll is nothing like you do something about it alone or myself
That's my name
like your song
yes but it portrays one of the least understood or respected campaigns in UK army history. Failure to rule France by 1916 clearly was indication the worst managed by far.
yeah really
✊🏾🙏🏾☯️🧿
yeah so what true wow does its something like you do so much fun something like you do something
If it is about Gate pa, why did you choose to shoot the video on top of Hikurangi? :) just curious.
To represent the East Coast forces who fought there.
