The fact Mama's chaingun is only effective on single enemies and the high firing rate of the plasma gun from the Arachnotrons made this a rather clear outcome, especially as you could do this on Maps 23 and 28 of Doom 2 to get around directly combatting the Mamas.
yeah, she can take down multiple arachnotrons, as long she faces them one by one, and not all at once in maps they don't usually come in big groups, so mastermind mostly will win
@@tacosunbirth Yeah, but the mastermind was the end boss of doom 1. For a final boss, this thing is a massive letdown. Tho I'm not sure what else could be done to make it more threatening besides increasing HP and damage. The only advantage it has is that it's hitscan. Arachnotrons are supposed to be less treatening than the mastermind.

The Spidermastermind was clearly designed to be anti player, and even that, she's not very good at. She's clunky, she attacks slow, and do quite pathetic damage.
They get stunned very easily, and keep being stunned when continuously shot. That's why they are easy to kill. Cyber doesn't get stunned easily. They can be really tough if they were not easy to stun.
It appears that for some reason, the arachnotrons are more coordinated and less likely to get in each other's firing range on higher difficulties. They will also focus fire on a specific enemy, effectively stun-locking them.
I’ve never looked at _DOOM_ ‘s source code, but from this video it looks like the arachnatron’s appear more coordinated on Nightmare because their engagement range is greater than usual, and so, not needing to move to engage the spider mastermind, they don’t get the opportunity to block each other

Player: 700 shots per minute. Arachnotron: 263 shots per minute. Incidentally, the Cacodemon's projectiles do exactly the same damage as the plasma gun balls shot by the Arachnotron and the player (but they shoot much more slowly).

Tests have been done with a modded SMM with an instant attack animation (rather than its brief pause). It's absolutely lethal. In its original state its slow attack animation means you only have to trigger the pain state within that window, which isn't actually that hard.

Actually probably not. Pain state has a chance to trigger every time damage is inflicted, and the arachnotron plasma doesn't actually hit that frequently. The SMM will get an attack in sooner or later, and then the arachnotron is toast. Check out the chaingunners vs SMM video this guy did. One chaingunner almost killed the SMM, but even with its extremely fast damage rate the SMM managed to attack eventually.
Interestingly, the SMM weapon isn't a chaingun as much as a rapid fire shotgun (based on how the weapon works). It's shooting multiple pellets in a spray multiple times a second.
