Lerxt's tone is wicked on many parts of this. That big ringing distorted tone is huge and clear at the same time. Not too much gain, so you can hear all the notes in their full glory.
It amazes me how much I miss Geddy's baseline underpinning Alex's guitar. Not so much musically but Geddy added a layer of emotion that gives Rush it's soul.. My apologies to Geddy for not realising before ♥
@@BW-kv9wj well that’s fine but is there a song that he actually shows his talent, like Gilmore has comfortably numb which was rated the best guitar solo ever, Eden can halen with eruption, and in totally forgot to mention Jimi
@@ratio567 Don’t get me wrong. All are great solos and great lead guitarists. I was raised on Rush and Black Sabbath. I had all their records, including all of Jimi Hendrix’ and Pink Floyd’s. I think Lifeson and Iommi’s style and technique put them over the top in my humble opinion. I had quite the record collection in the 70s and 80s. One could argue that Jimmy Page belongs in this list as well. Or even Randy Roades.
@@BW-kv9wj I agree about page just not Roades, I was raised on rush as well ( my pfp ) and can agree that Alex is a monster at guitar , like la villa strangiato and jacobs ladder, and lommi was amazing as well with the solo from snowblind, as well as into the void ( idk why no one talks about that song, it kicks ass) but Gilmore just has more complex solos
No one can really claim to have invented the heavy metal "gallop" guitar rhythm or claim to be the first to use it, but here Alex is doing it years before Iron Maiden.
This is creative, he uses the isolated guitar from All The World's A Stage for parts I & II and then uses the album version for part III since All The World's A Stage doesn't have The Discovery in it, they just skip right to The Presentation
@toskus Actually from the original session. They were given to Guitar Hero for use and through the magic of technology were ripped and split. So this is the original recording of 2112 :D
I love this, You can hera imperfections within the guitar track that otherwise are completely unnotciable in the finsihed mixed song, very cool. Ya know its good when you can listen to a whole song of JUST guitar & like it.
Overture and the "And the meek shall inherit the Earth" part are from All the World's a Stage. The rest of it is taken from the studio album (incl the sections in the part 2 video).
@MTLguitarist98 Don't know what to say... It is. I did cut out the short bits where there is no guitar because well... silence can get old fast, but this are original tracks. Now, this were taken from Guitar Hero... I know for a fact that Rush turned over the original tracks for them to use. Whether they sped them up or whatever I don't know.
Certainly sounds like a wound up Super Reverb, which he was known to use to record (and he would hide one behind the Marshalls with a mic on it). Very raw and has that Fender top end.
I really appreciate this - not just as a Rush fan, but a guitarist. This will be deeply dissected and examined. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go and fiddle around on my Tonelab ST :D
You have got to be kidding me !? I feels it's Christmas 🎄☺😌 with my finding all this great music 🎶🎵❤ tonite wow !!! I LOVE MY RUSH !!!! this completely rocks !!!! I can't believe I am only hearing this for the first time now. If you listen carefully you can hear Geddy in the background, very faintly around minute 5:30, singing, "we are the priests..." Crank it up!
@BassManGilbert - i believe the original tracks from All the World's a Stage, as 'toskus' said were given & ripped & split as you say, because there are very very distinct undeniable differences from the studio version. not only him playing a full chord for the last note of the riff measures at 0:33 (as he does today live), but then the Overture solo itself is not even in the same ballpark as the album. regardless, we're just making conversation, we really appreciate you posting them!!!!!!!
If I could I would LOVE to. I took these from Guitar Hero/Rock Band so I can only do what's available there. So.. 2112 and Moving Pictures. I believe I also have The Trees somewhere.. Maybe one or two others.
He used a Fender Super Reverb starting on Fly By Night (you can hear which songs are Marshall and what's Fender). That's what you hear in this. There were no distortion pedals in the '70s except fuzz.
rg7120 Overdrive and distortion pedals started to happen around the release of 2112. The Boss OD-1 was released in 1977 and the DS-1 in 78. Alex didn’t use a distortion pedal until the recording of Moving Pictures. Up until the tour for 2112 Alex used a fuzz. He never relied on fuzz/overdrive/distortion pedals that much or even wah pedals.
Vitor Heerdt everyone fucks up when their new to a song and there constantly making changes in the studios the difference between now and then is they where using tape and they simply didn't have time or money to set around and redo shit literally 40 times till they got it right they had about 1 or 2 takes and that was it!
Ryan Beasley Yes i know this and not trying to hate on him, but i like to noticed these things to remind-me that even people like Alex Lifeson can make one single mistake here and there sometimes
Gilbert, you mentioned in a comment you might have other guitar hero isolated tracks to share?? If so can you please please please post them?? Lifelong diehard RUSH tribute guitar player asking. 🙂
I don't think this is Alex. Listen closely to the solo, especially. That is not the solo I have spent years trying to get right. Some are saying it's from ATWAS. I will check on that...it's clearly from All The Worlds A Stage. My bad.
@@nkmcfrln They are two different types of delays but both are technically analog. Now, we do have digital "tape" emulating pedals like the Belle epoch that does a phenomenal job of emulating the echoplex. Incredible pedal that I'll own forever
it don't seem to me the original cd version. just listen at the end of the first solo: 2:38 of the video, 3:27 of the cd. this version has more notes?!?
No disrespect intended, as Al is my fave, but hearing this makes me realize what the other players and the engineer added. It's great, of course, but alone it's so.....different.....not as tight sounding. Now, listen to the final track, and it all fits perfectly. Terry? Sorry to resurrect a zombie thread, but first time here.

12:47, that bend up to a pinch harmonic. Man, gives me chills every time.

Dude... I had no idea he was using a phaser and wah combined like that. Wowwwwww this is amazing
I'm pretty sure he was using a Space Echo RE-201 as well.
Boy you can really hear how woody and punchy his tone was back then. A really great sound.
im playing the drum parts in my head
Scott Wooley yes!!
I can hear drums very slightly
In my opinion, he’s the best guitarist ever. Tony Iommi is a very close second.
I don’t know man Toby and Alex aren’t the best compared to people like eddy Van Halen and David Gilmore
@@ratio567 I think Tony Iommi is much better than Van Halen and Gilmore.

Tears... Any musician gets it. Cry..
So cool to hear this. So easy to hear the different tones used to make this. The album they made thinking it may be their last.
This was live and had some overdubs.
No one can really claim to have invented the heavy metal "gallop" guitar rhythm or claim to be the first to use it, but here Alex is doing it years before Iron Maiden.
10:04 the way he uses the open E and A strings is just so full and beautiful
He's my guitar superstar, one great hero of rock n' roll, but underrated!
I love the riff starting from 8:56. That kind of riff was popular in the 70's and that makes music around that era so appealing to me.
that chord was very popular back then with many artists

When Alex hits his pinch harmonics I lose that frequency of hearing forever. Just savage.
Some of his best work right here

That’s because this isn’t the exact track used in the master. Maybe that’s what you meant, but just in case it’s not : )
You can tell overture was done at a different time than temples. Tones are very different.

Breathtaking. Listening to him brings me to center.
8:01 sounds amazing. The whole volume of discovery is amazing

The Super Reverb is the distorted tone on 2112 and some parts of Caress of Steel. Alex has said it in interviews.

Really nice job, thanks!
Never noticed the guitar tone change between Overture and Priests before hearing this. It’s quite obvious! 😅

The best.....
My sentiments exactly!
F*cking awesome!
Well that explains why my twin reverb produces a great sound for this song!
I read it is a combination of a cranked Marshall Super Lead and a cranked Fender Twin SUPER LOUD
Any way to get the acoustic guitar part isolated too?
this isnt the original recording thats on the album cuz at 1:34 you can hear neil hit the hihat, which he doesnt do on the original album

COOL
Whoa! I had no idea Lerxst used so much delay!
A liberal use of analog delay
Is that not analog?
PlasticCog Liquid Tape and analog delays are two different things.
Alex used Echoplex’s and later Roland Space Echo’s i.e. tape delays.

Hell yeah!
Yeah

Why are there 4 numbers after my post?
that's the knob on his chorus pedal turned up to 7 and the echo pedal kicked in heavy at times :)
Is this from the studio version?
I think he was joking. As in, he knows it's Lerxst.
So how did he overdub live?
I always heard it different on the record. Incredible how deceiving it sounds in the mix
i am aware of that
wow dude did u even read the title of the video u clicked on.
ATWAS
Using the Fender for cleans?
No, marshall.
If the tone at 11:00 is from his maestro phase shifter colouring his tone then i fucking want one! lol
I bought a Maestro Phaser for 70 bucks back in the early 2000s. It was PERFECT. Damn I'm sorry I sold it :/
there is tic toc in atomic al
the rhythm parts seems to be ok...
