Was this the first time you saw her? (I think her vocals isn't as "strange" as before, probably because she herself is more used to it/has more control)
I felt the same way. She has a... presence which you have described perfectly: she's a Mythical/mystical Siren. To be enjoyed. Crack the code! Peace...
Don't call her a siren. Or a fairy. She made sure she doesn't want to be called that. "I wasn't born of a whistle or milked from a thistle at twilight No I was all horns and thorns sprung out fully formed, knock-kneed and upright." Quote from her song Sawdust and Diamonds. She is no mythical being. She's a woman who's extremely talented, extremely intelligent, extremely sensitive and emotional. But she's a human. Just a beautiful, wonderful, human being. You shouldn't be scared of this.
I'd say Newsoms a fair bit more talented than Samberg but I guess I'd think that because I'm a Joanna Newsom fan who knows Andy Samberg as the guy who's married to Joanna Newsom.
Honestly the thing I enjoy the most about this apart from that it’s a breath of fresh air is the fact that u can tell she cares about her art, it’s not just something coughed up for the sake of performance.
She has an extremely different view of the world and u can tell that by the unique and absolutely extraordinary style she has. Her music is so so different and honestly something i’ve never heard before! 🧚♀️
more brilliant, unique, intelligent lyrics in one song than most most artists manage in a career. this is an immense performance, hypnotic and enthralling. thank you joanna newsom.
One of the best performances on jools Holland full stop, regardless of genre. you can tell the whole room knew they’d witnessed something special. Beautiful on all levels.
Holy hell this is marvellous. I love how unique her style is. This is what music truly is, just pure art and emotion, not a popularity contest like most artists make it out to be.
Hay, and a clean stall And ivy on the garden wall And a sign saying sold And an old coat for the bad cold I believe in you Do you believe in me? What do you want to do? Are we leaving the city? On the black road Through the gold fields While the fields are plowed Towards what we are allowed The bridle bends in idle hands And slows your canter to a trot We mean to stop, in increments But can't commit, we post and sit, in impotence The harder you hit, the deeper the dent We seek our name, we seek out fame In our credentials, paned in glass Trained to master incidentals Bleach our collar, leech our dollar From our cents The longer you live, the higher the rent Beneath a pale sky Beside the red barn Below the white clouds Is all we are allowed Here, the light will seep And the scythe will reap And spirit will rend In counting toward the end In December of that year The word came down that she was here The days were shorter I was sure if she came 'round I'd hold my ground, I'd endure But they alluded to a change that came to pass And Spring deranged, weeping grass And sleepless broke Herself upon my window glass And I could barely breathe, for seeing All the splintered light that leaked Her fissures, fleeting, launched in flight Unstaunched daylight, brightly bleeding Bleached the night with dawn, deleting In that high sun, after our good run When the spirit bends Beneath knowing it must end And that is all I want here To draw my gaunt spirit to bow Beneath what I am allowed Beneath what I am allowed
Funny. That's pretty much what I associate with this song as well. Probably has something to do with the album's release date last year. I had the album on repeat for pretty much an entire month and listened to it whenever I was driving home from work. Of course the images the lyrics evoke are also rather autumnal.
Genius, Goddess, graciously gentle, humble humility. Love these ecological theme from someone who really knows their onions, onions. You see just how much Joanna knows about her natural world. Unpopular opinion ( I think) but I just don't get why people like the songs nowadays which is all about meaningless and materialistic things, not to mention the heavy auto tune. Joanna Newsom is an incredibly gifted musician and, as a singer myself, I cannot even begin to explain the complexity and elegance of her singing.
You and 23 ignorant morons. She's been on Jools twice, duh! It'd have only taken you a moment to find that out, you do have access to a thing called the internet, double duuuuh. Then there's the tiny little factor that Cee Lo is a star, has sold millions of records, hence is top guest with the most songs, double double duuuuuuh. Damn idiots....the world is surely doomed.
Actually, she was on Jools pretty much every time she released an album. However, I think there was only one show in which she performed more than one song.

chills. literal chills.
someone: no.5, he's the one who killed my brother
You did this 6 months ago but get a reply credit in 2020... well done good reference 🤣
Oh my god i forgot about that part
Came here wondering who was lucky enough to be with Andy Samberg. Turns out he's the lucky one.
anuja abhyankar omg same bro ahaha
anuja abhyankar they both are lucky I’m so happy for them 😭❤️
I can't decide if I want to be with him or her (given the choice. a choice I don't have hahaha)
What a cool comment hahahaha, it's true
Me too 😂😂
she scares me ... she's like some kind of mythical Siren. I was mesmerised when I saw and heard this on BBC2 last night.

I adore her so deeply. She is a medieval fairy. So talented
If she ever gets a cameo in B99 it needs to be captain holt admiring her music or something
Yeah! I would love it if Holt was a huge fan of her's and Jake just did not get the appeal.
Yesssss
YES.
@@mrjohndangerpowers HAHAHA that would be great omg
She does in the series finale. And yeah, Holt invites coz she's a cellist in the Boston Philharmonic.
Also I love that Andy married someone equally as unique and talented.... not me but ok I guess 😂😂😂
@pos exactly andy is nothing compared to her
@haya ahmed Joanna is one of the greatest musical talents of her error can't say the same about Andy in Acting
@@devynkumar1997 I love her, but also, Andy Samberg in Palm Springs and co-producing it also, that guy is incredibly talented and wise.

Such a contrast 🤣

she's so elegant and majestic and Andy Samberg is

...and Andy Samberg also is great as his craft. Both of them are INCREDIBLE.
excelling at his entirely unrelated and incomparable craft in his own way. why are you shitting on a happily married couple?
It's like jake and amy
Sometimes you just have to bow yourself and admit you’ve witnessed something unbelievable. Masterful
Beautiful, her voice has a Kate Bush influence in it. Gorgeous playing.
Hey
69th comment here 😄😄
Yes. Very Kate Bush. My first thought 😊

Chills. Every single time. Even better than the album version in some respects, love love love it.
Her voice is certainly unique, I love it though. It's so refreshing!
Sounds nothing like Kate Bush. KB’s voice isn’t nasal at all while Newsom’s voice is very nasal

She sounds *very similar* to Kate Bush.
Which isn't a bad thing.

I have always loved her raw and skeletal delivery of her songs. So great to listen to.
She needs to cameo on B99.
Definitely as they already had Melissa's husband

Genius.
SHE'S SO TALENTED OMG
Four years on, this is still one of the most mesmerising performances I’ve seen. Goosebumps.
just here to see who andy samberg has married, but yeah that was incredible
the smile at the end... SHE IS SO CUTE
She knows she did THAT.
Hay, and a clean stall
And ivy on the garden wall
And a sign saying sold
And an old coat for the bad cold
I believe in you
Do you believe in me?
What do you want to do?
Are we leaving the city?
On the black road
Through the gold fields
While the fields are plowed
Towards what we are allowed
The bridle bends in idle hands
And slows your canter to a trot
We mean to stop, in increments
But can't commit, we post and sit, in impotence
The harder you hit, the deeper the dent
We seek our name, we seek out fame
In our credentials, paned in glass
Trained to master incidentals
Bleach our collar, leech our dollar
From our cents
The longer you live, the higher the rent
Beneath a pale sky
Beside the red barn
Below the white clouds
Is all we are allowed
Here, the light will seep
And the scythe will reap
And spirit will rend
In counting toward the end
In December of that year
The word came down that she was here
The days were shorter
I was sure if she came 'round
I'd hold my ground, I'd endure
But they alluded to a change that came to pass
And Spring deranged, weeping grass
And sleepless broke
Herself upon my window glass
And I could barely breathe, for seeing
All the splintered light that leaked
Her fissures, fleeting, launched in flight
Unstaunched daylight, brightly bleeding
Bleached the night with dawn, deleting
In that high sun, after our good run
When the spirit bends
Beneath knowing it must end
And that is all I want here
To draw my gaunt spirit to bow
Beneath what I am allowed
Beneath what I am allowed
i still dont know why i like her music
so weirdly good
this is absolutely breathtaking and beautiful in a way that's too complex for me to comprehend
