    The long wait to get into a long term care home is a manifesto the lack of supporting resources and government policy! I applied to get into a long term care home a few months ago, the girl making the application told me the waiting period is about 5 to 7 years, I am 91 years old, that means, how many people can live to be almost 100 before they get in the long term care home, the system needs a change and the government should be responsible!

    One more comment. Yes there are care facilities opening up that have very high standards of practice and higher stashing ratios than legally required. Unfortunately they are all private pay with a cost of 7500to $8300 per month to the individual to stay there. Demetia village? Awesome. But as usual only the rich can afford it. The rich have always had access to excellent care. The problem is the people who are relying on government assistance and subsidy in order to live. They get the minimum, and even that is often not met.

      @Joygernaut M : Yes, MINIMAL, ... at best.

      mikecorbeil it’s sad. What really gets me is that every time you go to a Walmart or something they’re getting collections for Children’s Hospital. Fact is Children’s Hospital’s are extremely well funded and well staffed but Care homes are not. Sadly the funding allocated reflects the values of our society that views elders as disposable

    Do not put your loved ones in a nursing home at all! Unless you absolutely do not give a DAMN about them!

      That is a terrible attitude to have. Some people genuinely need the services of long term care facilities because of the intensity or nature of their care needs. The idea that family should provide this kind of care only leads to burnout and substandard care.

      Spoken by a person who is obviously never had an elder living with them suffering from wandering and violent dementia where they try to beat the crap out of you every day.

      The comment I was looking for. I totally agree with you, I would never under any circumstances put my parents in any care facility or whatever💔

      @Evie CD : "Profit", not "pophet". There's a tremendous difference between the two terms. Use a dictionary; f.e., www.thefreedictionary.com.

    In Toronto, restaurants display a small poster that they have passed hygiene inspections.
    Perhaps a similar system could be used with homes.

    A lot of the blame lies at the feet of the nurses union who kept protecting Wettlaufer!

    Nobody has been able to visit LTC homes in over 1.5 years. I've had to choose homes for my mom based solely on phone calls, videos and inspection reports. It's a scary time and not ideal.

    The Long Term Care Homes Must Begin to Hire more Full Time Staff, at least until the covid 19 Pandemic is under greater control, and Profit margins Should not be any part of the Configuration! it is long past Time for LTC owners to get seriously involved!!! this has been caused by their ""NEGLIGENCE"

    Plan: Lead a healthy lifestyle, treat family right and spend your final years in the loving care of your family. Otherwise, have a well documented exit plan that does NOT include a Long Term Care “institution”.

    As the saying goes Happy wife = Happy life. The same goes here. Happy PSW = Happy resident. They are the ones giving quality of life along with essential care to your loved ones. They are their substitute family. I see a great need for better support and appreciation for this line of work. As the saying goes sh*** flows downhill. It is why staff get desensitized and burnt out. More training is needed for senior management on how to support and retain staff moral. Starts at the top.

    I find a lot of families put their loved ones in Assistant living when they actually need skilled nursing. Assistant living is basically hospitality service they are not medical facilities.

    Just love that socialized medicine. I wonder why though that not everyone gets the same level of care? Is it something to do with socialism?

      @@eds8691 We payed $3800USD/yr for gold-plated, Cadillac care in the US that included innumerable treatment options unavailable in Canada. Since 38% of federal taxation goes to healthcare, we now pay about $30,000/yr to wait months or years for substandard care.

    • @mikecorbeil
      @mikecorbeil 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@930Tony : It's been reported many times for many years that the US, with its dog-eat-dog capitalist and imperialist system costs more to taxpayers for healthcare than in other western countries; again, for taxpayers. They pay for non-rendered services. The province of Quebec, Canada, has a lousy medical care system, but only because the politicians, the political ministers, from one main pol. party to another like to apply the "hatchett job" to the system and have been doing this since the late 1970s or early 1980s. They don't know how to competently weild an axe, but they sure have fun wildly trying. Rest of Canada should be better; I doubt we could find worse. Well, it still costs less for taxpayers than what the costs amount to in the US. I try to work on resolving my problems, myself. Professional med. care is only for when I don't find a way to look after my own problems, and this is very SELDOM. It's happened, but it's a rare occasion. I don't know how the healthcare systems are in other provinces; only speaking about Quebec. The govt ministers are also jackasses in other respects, but they have nothing to do with this CBC report, so I won't say more about that, not for this comment.

      Well Ann, it's hard to say, but it can be very exhausting and financially burdening to take care of loved one(s). That's why it's best to do Long-term Care planning, so you and your loved one(s) can be financially and personally free from any burden.
