    I wanted to give a bit of info on this particular video, especially if you’ve been following my channel since the beginning. Back when I released my second video (Spider-man on the 32X) I had been working on reviews for every spider-man game released for the Genesis and its attachments. I had captured 10+ hours of footage for the Web of Fire, Spider-man Vs Kingpin (Genesis and CD), Spider-man X-men, Maximum Carnage, and Separation Anxiety. I had notes on all of them and partial reviews started for all by Separation Anxiety. Then my computer went belly up and I lost all my gameplay footage.
    As of today, I have put out a video for Spider-man Vs Kingpin (Genesis and CD) and now this one. It’s been extremely hard to get back to finishing these games because I feel the need to discuss them in the order they were developed and I can’t stand playing this particular game. I think it’s safe to say this is one of my least liked genesis games, and I really couldn’t continue to play it beyond what was required to capture the footage needed to finish the review that I started nearly a year ago. Originally I hadn’t beat the game but had progressed to the second stage of each charter. So while I might not be able to beat every game I review, I always spend a sizable amount of time with them. This one isn’t an exception, I just don’t happen to have that footage. I hope you’re still able to enjoy this review even with the limited footage while keeping this in mind, and as always thanks for stopping by.

      Jenovi The story in the comics came out in 79” (of which Spider Man only made a brief cameo appearance when greeting Cyclops and Phoenix on their date night). The game came out in 92” so the game developers aimed to use some elements from the comics all the while use the X-Men that were popular in the early part of the 90s as well as make Spider Man more actively involved since he is in the title. Wolverine, Cyclops, and Storm were the only relevant X-Men characters that were present in 1979 and 1992 alike. They picked Gambit since he was one of the most popular in the 90s though his first comic appearance was in 1990. The other X-Men in the original storyline that were captured by Arcade (Banshee, Nightcrawler, and Colossus) were not active X-Men in 1992. There’s nothing wrong with improvising a 1979 storyline to the events of the 1990s, but the games’ costume choices for Cyclops and Wolverine were from the 1980s, not the 1990s (as shown on Sega Genesis game cover) so that’s the first thing they messed up on. Though it was minor, that was no excuse. The game designers also didn’t want to make this a great game and it shows how lazy they were not to mention the cruel difficulty. 99% of the games made by LJN were horrible so this was expected.

      @@jeffrey5165 I'm pretty sure Colossus was back with the X-Men for 1992, even though he'd been absent for a couple of years prior to that. Still, it made sense why they'd cut Nightcrawler and, especially, Banshee.

    • @jeffrey5165
      @jeffrey5165 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      todesziege Actually you’re right. Colossus was still part of the X-Men, but wasn’t a popular choice by that time, compared to Gambit. In this game, they didn’t do Gambit any justice. From what I recall, Gambit is supposed to be agile and great in hand to hand combat (almost to Wolverine’s level) plus where’s his trademark bo staff?? What were they thinking when they created this piece of shit!

    • @todesziege
      @todesziege 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jeffrey5165 To be fair, I think Colossus only rejoined the X-Men at the beginning of 1992, so it's possible he wasn't there when the development started. And, sure, Gambit was a more popular X-Man and, at least potentially, more interesting from a gameplay perspective. Of course, they messed all of that up, but still, I can understand why they went with Gambit.
      I guess that the real question is why they went with a 14-year old comic story, starring a largely different X-Men cast, to begin with...

The main reason why I purchased these games was not just the bargain price, but Game Pro magazine gave these game’s rave reviews. But, for Spider-Man/X-men Arcades revenge…. I beg to differ.

    While I enjoy your work for the most part, I found this video to be very problematic. You say there is a hit detection problem in the Wolverine stage. I have this game, and I never found that to be a problem. You questioned what Gambit was doing in a game based on a 1979 story. Well, the original story was called 'Arcade's Murder World.' The game's story is called 'Arcade's Revenge.' Something tells me this game is sort of a sequel to the original. It may not make its self as clear beyond the title, but that's what I always took it as. You say it would take a gamer hours to get it right hitting the mine cart in Cyclops' level. It took me mere seconds when I first played it. The space to hit it is not as narrow as you think. And by the way, I am a terrible gamer. You can ask anyone who plays me how bad I am, so you know I am not just gloating. You also claim that this game was released at the tail end of the 16-bit era. That is patently false. The 16-bit era was from 1989 to 1995. The tail end began in 1994, a full two years later. And just so we're clear, I am not mad at ya, or trying to start an internet war here, lol! I just noticed these errors and wanted to point them out since you said you wanted comments, positive and negative, left below. Sorry you had such a frustrating time with this game. It's actually one I enjoy a lot.

    • @Jenovi
      @Jenovi  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Ter,
      I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts with me. Seeing how other people view a game, especially when those views are different than mine is something I really appreciate. Just wanted to touch on a couple things. It's a review and of course my opinion, I try to lay out the reasons behind my feelings so the viewer can decide if they are valid or not. I can completely appreciate the experience you've had is different than mine. I've played a number of games like Motocross on 32X that I find to be fun and easy to control while other people have a hard time. For me, this game was not fun in 1992, and I still didn't enjoy it 26 years later.
      The game released around Christmas of 92 on the SNES and Christmas of 93 for the Genesis. Regardless of if you believe these systems were in their final stretch or not, it was more a point of how developers had been working with 16-bit consoles for some time. The graphical representation we received wasn't acceptable. I mean one year later we receive Maximum Carnage from the same team (I have my own set of issues with this game too) and it's very much within expectations for both systems.
      A final thought, there is strong evidence to support that the game is based on the comic. The name change is almost certainly due to the word murder being in the title and fear of negative publicity from anti-everything coalitions trying to censor and ban games in what would result in the ESRB. One thing you might find interesting is that X-Men 32X was to have Arcade as the main boss as well.
      Again thanks for sharing and I hope you have a great day.
      -Jenovi

      @Terr Cain. Yes, these errors really undermine the review. The fact he mentions in the pinned comment that he hadn't progressed past stage 2 just kills it for me. How can anyone review a game without beating the 2nd level? SMH.
      I also enjoyed this game. It's challenging and you need some skills to beat it.

    • @melchior2678
      @melchior2678 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think this was a totally bad review but Jenovi failed to mention this game's best feature - the music.
      This game had some of the best music of any SNES game ever despite having such awful gameplay. Granted we don't buy games for their music but games do need good music and that was the one thing that saved this game from being totally forgettable.

      @@Jenovi Came here by recommendation from Slope's Game Room - have to say the Soundtrack of the SNES Version (unfortunately it's kinda mutilated in every other version of the game, it's that kind of music which pairs so much better with the SNES's sound hardware - or they were too lazy to try better on the Genesis) is PHENOMENAL (especially the Spider Man Theme). Tried this game on a friend's console a few years ago, made my way through that intro stage but failed miserably in any other I was able to choose after that. But that song never left me since, this Soundtrack deserved to be in a much better game. Have a SNES copy in my collection but never played it, wanted to try it again tough but after that video I know that it most certainly won't be a good time at all.

      @Jenovi  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the message and for stopping by to watch a video. You best believe that when moving most games from the SNES to the Genesis laziness along with a strong desire to be cheap caused a whole host of issues. The hardware, especially the sound chips were vastly different beast. Moving music from one system to the other was like trying to turn a screwdriver into a hammer.

    "The Genesis color pallet", that's not a reason nor an excuse, one could get plenty of colors to choose from, they just chose badly. ;) . It doesn't help that these games were designed for CRT screens an a RF signal at worst and a composite signal at best, which changes the colors and pixels tremendously. On emulation it looks loads worse. Doesn't make it a better looking or good game though.

      Drop the first few anvils on his head. After you do the first jump just start running and cutting ALL of the anvils down. Wait for him at the last one. As soon as he hits it start clawing at him. Youll have to move up a bit after slashing him so he doesn't kill you and eventually you get him. It helps to start clawing him at the beginning too but make sure you drop the first few on his head.

    As an adult, I now get why this game got trashed in terms of graphics but really I don't get why everyone is so pissed about the difficulty. The only legit rough parts about it are the lack of continues & the fall deaths. The health bar is otherwise so long that you can take lots of punishment with most characters. I was 9 when the Genesis port came out in 1994 & not to say it was easy but i loved it & would beat it regularly. I'd play with my 10 & 7 year old cousins too, passing the controller around casually to whoever preferred a certain level. Lose a life? No prob, pass it on & the next guy would usually get it on the next try.. to hear that grown ass men failed is a slightly strange stroke to the ego. The soundtrack is also awesome & probably served as a motivator.

    Oh man. I think this was my first Spider-Man OR X-Men game that I ever owned and I absolutely hated it as a kid. I couldn't even make it past the first Spider-Man stage. It was so boring and the controls were so frustrating. The way you set this video up, I thought you'd found some neat merits to this game. NOPE. It's just as bad as I remember. It was cool to hear that it was based on an X-Men comic story from the 70's though. I didn't know that.

    Great video. Looks shitty. Game Pro fucked me over alot with their reviews back then. It was the only real souce of info I had and they were giving out alot of top scores to shitty games. Much worse than the corporate ass kissing that goes on in alot of reviews today. EGM was much better, but you were stuck with whatever magazine you had a subscription too, if you had one at all. Most purchases were based off the box art unfortunately. Some companies you knew were consistant like Konami, Capcom, Nintendo and Sega. Though Sega started putting out shit like Chakan and Green Dog later.

    i dont understand why many of you throw sh1t to this game, yes, maybe its not perfect, but its one of my favorite games of my childhood, maybe gambit doesnt have melee attacs but instead has a super power wich make him invincible for two seconds, besides he has a trick to obtain infinite lives like mario bros, the game has great themes, in fact this is the game where gambit became my favorite characte ever, and i got proud of myself when i beat this game before my brother who is 8 years older than me. Besides I realized than many of you show stinky gameplay to make see the game more disgusting than it really is.

    You are a little salty, you complain to much about it. It’s not directly based off the story as is any marvel super hero game. Unnecessary first level? Actually very necessary. I beat it when I was 7. You reviewing this based on how bad you are at the game.

  • @CheapJabroni

    It wasn’t called Spider-Man vs kingpin. Do a little research

    • @Jenovi
      @Jenovi  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's debatable. If you play the Mega Drive game, the title screen clearly states Spider-Man VS Kingpin. It's also referred to this in the definitive version for the Sega CD where it's renamed The Amazing Spider-Man VS Kingpin. Finally, there was another game called Spider-Man released on the Genesis. To clear confusion, the game by Sega is called Spider-Man VS Kingpin while the other is called Spider-Man the animated series. Hope that helps clear things up.
