Merci encore.
Interesting use of the Regal Chamade 2/16' at 6:25. I have seen the new stoplist since the 2012-2014 work and it appears they have now changed this rank to simply Regal 8'. What for? I have also closely looked at pictures of the facade of the organ, and the tiny, thin regal pipes appear to have been altered and have smaller openings. Curious if someone knows anything about this.
I know chamades were added in the 1992 restoration in a more Cavaille-Coll style, but I was curious about the Regal built by Robert Boisseau, which was changed at some point probably around 2014. I don’t think the Boisseau chamades were made louder at all.
Notre Dame organ at this time was in very sad shape. It had to be hand registered because the combination action failed and did not work so the only thing that work was the crescendo pedal, couplers and tutti button. Yves Devernay and his assistant jean Fröhlich were still able to work magic and come up with many brilliant improvisations.
These fantastic recordings also give us a glimpse into the world of Notre Dame after the death of Pierre Cochereau. The organ was in terrible shape. The console had been without combination action since late 1983. The tuning was unstable, dead notes, but nevertheless it still sounded glorious!
Devernay must have been drunk most of the time. I'm sure if he tried, he could play in tempo, so I think he just didn't care. The semiquaver man ain't got no time for minims! One can even argue that being "subjectively" in tempo is actually more important than being measurably in tempo. In a similar way, what appears optically straight in a picture may not be actually straight, and vice versa.
Couperin le Grand he definitely strikes me as an immensely talented musician who didn't exactly "try" all of the time. However, his performance of Dupre's Varations sur in vieux Noel, which can be found here on TH-cam, is just out of this world in almost every way.
I've been up there twice. Once in 2002, once in 2004. I was deafened on both occasions
He is a legend and my master. Thank you for these recordings.
Yes! Legend and master! The one and only Yves Devernay!
I'm so grateful for the recordings there is of him.

Olivier Latry and the team expanded upon them, made them louder and added more

13:35 The incredible chamades
@3:23 the registrant forget to turn off the Quintes, Tierces and Septieme stop

He loved the chamades
La console du Maitre Cochereau. Le seul, l'unique.

Tu es as jamais dans mons coeur
What´s the melody/theme at min. 9 following?
Victimae paschali laudes
pourquoi ces coupures?quel dommage!!!
His tempo was too often too instable - not really under control, like stumbling or falling forward.
I do not mean the true rubati. Sorry, but for example the tempo change during the first theme of the first fugue does not make sense to me.

I have to agree. And it was recorded at too high a volume. Sound engineer's problem, not the organists. Too bad.
I am sorry but this is a dreadfull performance. Rhythmically unsteady, wrong notes, and the organ sounds terrible.
