  • Prof. Ben Bikman, a biomedical scientist at Brigham Young University. Dr Bikman is known for his research into the contrasting roles of insulin and ketones as key drivers of metabolic function.
    In “Why We Get Sick,” Ben takes a deep dive into insulin resistance and metabolic health. The book particularly focuses on the role that insulin resistance plays in many of today’s most common diseases: heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and Alzheimer’s. The Bikman Lab investigates the molecular mechanisms behind the increased risks of disease that accompany obesity and excess visceral fat. Much of the research at the Bikman Lab particularly focuses on the etiology of insulin resistance and how it disrupts mitochondrial function.

    I was recently in hospital with a myasthenia crisis and had pneumonia. I am not diabetic. Out of my ward of 6 patients, 3 were diabetic. All were groggy on waking. At breakfast they were given orange juice, cereal with milk, tea with 2 and 3 sugars, then a bag with an apple, banana and orange. After breakfast all 3 patients were passed out and sleeping by 0830. One lady had a BM of 7, after breakfast it was 21. She was then given meds. I think diabetes care needs to be looked at again.

      I am in a nursing home for rehab after a broken hip. The surgery team did a great jpb fixing the pelvis and the nurses and hospital staffers a great help BUT I am diabetic for 30 years, not in good control but not terrible either. So Iguess I am an average diabetic struggling to keep some kind of control. So I go to this hospital for this surgery and when they find out that I am diabetic t ask me how much insuln I am taking and I say 8 to 10 3 or 4 times a day. Then when they start gving me insulin I ask them how much? They say they are using a sliding scale and giving me 3. And my bloood sugar starts to climb, on the hospital diet. My blood sugars are now averaging over 300 and now they are using 5 units a day. I mention this to somebody but I am completely ignored. So I have my wife bring me my flexpen and I take an extra 6 u. Then I told the nurse and she had a meltdown. Telling me that the hospital had its policies and we couldn't violate those policies. The fact that my blood sugars were going out of control meant nothing. Then a funny thing happened. That night the doctor on call noticed the blood sugars and ordred a corrective value of 12 which I agreed with. The nurse told me that I had to remove my flexpen from the hospital. We did not have a good relationship. Me and that hospital have not had the last say on this yet.

      @@ranchoboomerang Yep. I am pretty sure some of them are working quite well while there are others that I question. Gout is very, very painful. I hav had gout attacks in the past but not so much recently however I have had gout so bad I couldn't walk in the morning. Went to the dic and got this little miracle pill. Took it and was pain free by late afternoon. My daughter had a similar experience. My wifes sister had a serious heart attack and she and her family were pretty picky about what they ate. She was treated at a hospital and put on meds. Her husband is a mechanical engineer and considers himself quite smart. He thought he knew more than the doctors and took her off of her meds. She died a few months later of a massived heart attack. This same husband sent me some lpages from a book about reversing diabetes. The book sounded kinda hoakey to me. Then just by accident I caught this author doing one of those late night self infomercial things. He sounded absolutely ignorant and ill informed. To be clear I am not entirely in love with doctors and modern medicine. I have my own disagreements and questions. I think someday there will be a diabetic med that will be effective for many people but probably not all. I believe that medical technologhy is just coming out of the dark ages compared to where it will be 100-200 years from now. But we are here now and have to deal with it. So if a person decides that they do not trust doctors and medicine and want to choose another way to deal with their health I am completely on board. Their choice is their business and their ideas are as good as mine. I do believe that many of our diseases are lifestyle generated and could be greatly controlled by better diet, exercise and other lifestyle changes. But I am 84 and while I try I don't think I have enough time to make great changes to my health. As many do, I squandered my youth. So, I am just grateful to hav lived this long in sorta good health and have a wife of 60 years who is still with me. Next time I will write the extended version. :) I really do wish I could type better.

      I am 67 and still struggling to correct all the physical conditions caused by years of misinformation regarding diet. Insulin resistance, large kidney stones, overactive parathyroid leaching calcium from my bones (osteopenia), migraines. Surgeries, procedures, etc to fix said issues because these are the only resources the doctors have. I have radically changed my diet to include more animal products, less oxalates, and definitely more fat than I ever allowed myself to consume. I feel great, and hope to feel even greater, once I clean up these left over issues; by eating the proper Human diet.
      I am trying not to be resentful as to add to the myriad of negative ways my body resorts to saving itself. Mostly, I feel it produces copious amounts of cortisone. So, staying calm as I march forward is priority.

Further discussion revealed he believed I should not question his judgement and just do what he said. What a poor example for a scientist and now I am in the market looking for a Doc that wishes to stay up with the science, question the status quo of knowledge and treat me like an adult that is in charge of his own health. I had been doing Keto for about 2 weeks when I began intermittent fasting, I just wasn't hungry all day like before Keto. Well soon after I got curious about multi-day fasting and began what I expected to be a 5 day fast, but on day 3 ketones were high, blood sugar low, but I developed joint pain in my wrists and pain in one big toe, and I immediately ended my fast and the pains went away immediately. I got a home uric acid kit and discovered that my uric acid was sky high! So the mechanic in me had to know what happened, I have to know this before I can fix anything. Well I searched for over a week, and came across a paper written, I think in the 40's or 50's, about diabetics, ketoacidosis and uric acid, I found my answer there. This paper explained that when ketones are high, the body gives priority to eliminating ketones over uric acid to prevent ketoacidosis, but uric acid can build up during this time. I also found that over time the body gets better at juggling the uric acid and ketones, while in ketosis, and sure enough, a month later and I was able to complete a 5 day fast with no problems.

      what is the difference between ketoacidosis and ketosis?

    • @robinbeers6689
      @robinbeers6689 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      @@kc201310 Ketoacidosis only happens in type 1 diabetics. Ketosis is a perfectly natural metabolic state of burning ketones for fuel.

    • @richardmathews8250
      @richardmathews8250 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      @@kc201310 Ketoacidosis is when there is not enough, or any insulin to bring the blood sugar level down by allowing the cells to receive glucose, so because the body is needing energy, the liver begins converting fat to ketones, in order to get energy to the cells, because cells can access ketones without insulin, this is a risk for type 1 diabetics. To be in a state of ketoacidosis you need BOTH ketones AND blood glucose to be very high. A type 2 diabetic still produces insulin, so ketoacidosis is not a concern for a type 2, and if a type 1 is monitoring their blood sugar, there is not concern there, but a type 1 must be vigilant. A non-diabetic will not encounter ketoacidosis, so high ketones are not a concern. For the 5 + years I've done Keto, carnivore and multi-day fasting, the higher my ketones go, the lower my blood glucose goes, which also is not a concern because my body is getting energy from ketones (my stored fat), so their is less need for blood glucose, no such thing as a hypoglycemic as long as you are fat adapted.

      So you have faith that there is no God...but what is the hope in that faith? As a Christian, I expect eternal life and a new body that shines like the sun, as Jesus did at the transfiguration. hat's a pretty sweet hope. Christianity does not just promise that your soul is eternal, but that your body will be raised and made eternal and perfect. That's quite a hope and a promise, backed up by massive amounts of archeology (my current morning meditation), history, science and scholarship on the Bible... God took a people, the Jews, preserved them and refined them, and brought in a savior for the world, overcoming the certain death we all face with death itself, canceling it out and giving us the Gospel: the Good News of the hope of eternal life through an elegant, accessible solution: faith that God came here as the man Jesus Christ and allowed himself to be murdered so that He Himself could overcome death for all of us. Just as Bose head phones cancel out sound, God canceled death through bodily death and resurrection. Imagine how much history and wars have been fought for this hope. How many people died just to have access to the Bible and not to deny this faith. 11 of the Apostles allowed themselves to be brutally killed rather than deny this hope.

      @@tyndaleisrael6058 thank you for pointing out how dangerous ideological fanaticism can be. The atheist hope is that we can move toward a more human- and earth-centered mode of being instead of a tribal war of indoctrination, that we will make the best of the life we have now because we know it is the one we have instead of acting on behalf of a fairy tale life that will never come.

    .'s Bickman, and Berry. Dr. Bickman is such an intelligent and humble man. I've bought his book and given it to friends to try and educate them. I am so happy someone asked about rising glucose on carnivore. It was driving me nuts thinking maybe I needed to actually count calories? The question about caffeine was also very helpful. Thank you both so very much for what you do for us all.

    • @vernaxxx8940

      @@aaronwells6608 I agree it is disconcerting. However he is able to accurately define the scientific approach ("try and prove yourself wrong"). I read his book without feeling at any stage that religion was contaminating his science. So I am giving him the benefit of the doubt.

    • @jchinckley
      @jchinckley ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aaronwells6608 This just shows that you are ignorant of the history of science. Without religion and the priests and other people of faith the scientific revolution would never have happened. No good scientist, religious or not, would allow personal beliefs to interfere with scientific investigation. Only corrupt scientists would allow a personal ideology or belief to skew their data or the results of any experiment. And Dr Bikman took a stance against this exact thing happening in the "world of science" right now.
      It makes it difficult for me to take anyone seriously that refuses to look at the actual evidence and who immediately jumps to a conclusion ignoring the evidence presented to them.

    Very insightful. I did a ketogenic diet during the first lockdown in the UK, 2020. I lost 24kg of body fat in about 6 months. I included intermittent fasting which I still do. I'm a bit more of a carb eater now and I must say I'm feeling tired all the time again like before. I'll go back to low carb again soon because it felt better and I had the energy of a machine. I usually fast about 18-20 a day anyway. It'd be quite easy to start burning ketones again. I haven't drunk alcohol in 11 years which I feel also helps your health.
