@@thelstanedwardsson4374 He _fully_ expected it. There's a scene earlier in the film where he discovered Steve was compiling a dossier on him, just like the ones he was teaching Steve to compile on the marks.
As superior as this film is to the Jason Statham remake, I have to confess that this is the one part of this movie that never has, and still does not sit well with me: that Bishop uncovers evidence that the apprentice he has taken on is planning to kill him, and he doesn't take him out _first._
@@Hibernicus1968 Yeah I noticed that scene where he noticed the dossier that Steve McKenna has obtained. I have the DVD, and I agree its unexplained... but...there are plenty of possible motives for Arthur Bishop letting it happen. He's murdered his 'friend' and Father of Steve McKenna and perhaps there is a conscience there. Perhaps also his health is a factor too - he passes out in the Marine Aquarium,... could that be a tumor or something..probably not.. But... there are possibilities.
What I loved about this movie is that THERE WERE NO WINNERS! NO SEQUEL!!! This is a true ending for a movie.
Had there been a sequel, it would hard to imagine Bronson doing insane stunts like Statham did in the remake sequel from 2016

Largest Classifieds My father spied Bronson either 70s or early 80s. He told me he was sitting in his chair under the 59th Street bridge on a movie set. He saw Bronson as he was driving by. Might as well share the story since he told me a long time ago and long since passed. Bronson lives in the memory of many even my current neighbors.

I met Jan in Austin, Texas on 6th Street in 1990. Not that great of an actor, nor Bronson but I loved them both!. R.I.P. to both. Get over it.

JMV played a completely Evil , Charming, Good-Looking, but totally Souless Sociopath is this Movie. In AirWolf ,he was defitnely the good Guy. I think that JMV had to Leave AirWolf of his Drinking Porblems. I think, but I am not positive that he died of Alcholism. Too bad that he didnt get into a Good Rehab and/or Try A.A.

As others have mentioned, Bishop planned this very carefully. It couldn't be an instant explosion when opening the car door. McKenna needed to know who killed him, and he needed to feel that bolt of terror and fear in his gut. Too much of a delay might have given him a chance to escape. McKenna enjoyed the flight home, spent a few minutes in his beautiful new mansion, decided to go for a spin, and.. boom.
If only he'd have seen the note & read the note before opening the door. He had it in his mind that he could relax, thought he had outwitted Author Bishop. But he was wrong. If he'd have known about the bomb that his car was rigged like that, chances are if he'd have shot the car thrown a stick of dynamite at it that might have saved him.

Wow this is an old comment. But, I just wanted to say that Bronson is just an interesting man to watch on screen. Looks like he’s seen some shit.
The 13-second delay from 4:11 - 4:24 gave him enough time to read the note so he would know who killed him. I think Edgar Allen Poe wrote about that theme once: it is very important for the target to know, before he dies, who killed him, and why. That is the reason that the killer is willing to take the risk that the target will escape while that lesson is taught. Otherwise, it would have been only a 3 second trigger.
Exactly. Do you ever wonder why these movies are so great to watch. It’s because its something we want to do to someone but can’t because of our moral nature. We all have our Darksides. Control by the Angela of our nature. But we get to live out these feelings watching people get blown up and shot and murdered.

The most underrated action film of the 1970s. Charles Bronson's best performance.
I think his best movie of that decade was Hard Times but this one is still a classic anyway; Charley Varrick is also one of those awesome 70's action movies that are criminally underrated, the Seven-ups is very good too, great decade for action movies.
@@g.sergiusfidenas6650 The Seven Ups (1973) didn't have Bronson. Roy Schieder starred in that. Hard Times (1975) comes a distant second for me.
I didn't see the ending coming in this one and that is why I like this one better. Also the first 15 minutes with no dialogue was a terrific scene for an action film. This is Bronsan's masterpiece. He was never better.
I do agree with you that The Seven Ups is a good film but only because of that terrific chase scene.
@@MaxSharma1989 I guess it is a matter of taste but for me his best movie was Once Upon a Time in the West but it was not carried only by Bronson, Cardinale, Fonda and Robards were all excellent too. Anyway Charles was way better than the last stage of his career for which he is mostly remembered for sadly.

This is Bronson's best.....Jan-Michael was beautifully handsome...in the '70's his career at this time was hot....I was very happy for his come back with the hit tv show "Airwolf" sad to see how Jan lost it all now because of drugs, alcohol.

He knew JMV was going to try to kill him but he didn't just run away. He lived his action-packed life. Like JMV said he couldn't hack it alone. But he had the final say in taking out JMV after he was dead. They don't make endings like this any more.

Watch it again - I believe it was the door opening a second time that actually tripped the bomb. The 13 seconds was just to create a sense of panic and prevent the mark from thinking things through (maybe exiting through a window). The reason I think this is so Charles could have disarmed the bomb manually from the inside visa a switch. That way the trap stays live and active for the duration of his "career" and partnership - so he isn't resetting it every day and taking unnecessary risks.

Awesome observation. Makes perfect sense through and through. If a hit man was treacherous enough to bomb his target's car, why would he feel a moral compunction to write a truthful note to the target?

I timed it from the moment he opened the door. It WAS 13 seconds!!!!
If that's the case, then it's doubtful he rigged it to go off opening a second time and more likely he rigged the trip to the inside door handle, which Steve would need to get out but not in.
Little did Steve know his first hit would be himself.

I saw that in Seattle with my brother. We were both on the edge of our seats waiting for the finale as we had about 10 minutes to catch the ferry. As soon as the kaboom, we ran outta the theater as fast as we could. Made it! Great show. Miss them both.

The sign of the best at his craft. Yes, JMV was correct about his weakness of not being able to cut it alone. But JMV, made the mistake of underestimating the master. He told him he was an associate, not a partner. JMV, still had a lot to learn...

Even when Steve is at bishops house you can still feel bishops presence as if he were there.
Love the grainy look of the movies of the 1970s, ...they had a gritty realism that sadly lack in modern day movies,....and this Charles Bronson classic, ticks all the boxes.

Other than The Godfather and maybe some Dirty Harry films, best movie revenge scene ever!

@@cindyinnew it is great, Caine was a big star already by that time so the producers were quite surprised he was willing to interpret such character but thank god he did what a gem of movie; apparently Hendry (the guy who played Eric) was their first choice to play Carter but by that time he was such an alcoholic that there was no way he could pull that role despite being a great actor in his own right, he also seemed to detest Michael Caine and envied his success given that his own career was declining and thus the enmity seen in the screen was partially based in real life.

Now THAT'S what I call a finish. Love the Charles Bronson movies involving revenge. These days I'm watching people like Liam Neeson. Not quite as good but you take what you can get.
My man Bronson, so cool in the movies. All his cowboy flicks are great but my favorite is Hard Times, such a classic, Mr. Majestyk was too.

This film was also helped by a pretty good soundtrack music score - Jerry Fielding? The sequence where Bronson discovers that Vincent has been ordered to kill him is a very well executed example as are the opening minutes of the film. Never tire of watching this film now and again. Still stands up well.

Saw this as a kid when it came out, don't really know why but love the inside of that house.
CB was a very hard working actor for some time, and especially through the 1970's. Not bad at all considering he was a relatively late starter in the profession. He was doing some of his best action films when he was in his forties and fifties.
I have to admit being a fan of "Death Wish IV" Its a really bad film, but Bronson still does a good job with his role. You never see him sleeping his way through a movie like some established stars do.
He always delivered.

When I first saw The Mechanic in the theater along with a high school friend in 1973, I was 17 years old. The main feature (dbl. features still back then) was Dirty Harry; Magnum Force. The theater is on the same block where I reside, the Granada Theater.
DAMN, I would have LOVED to have seen those 2 movies together!!
@@arthurbishop3173 And it was the last late showings for that night. I think my buddy and I walked out the Granada Theater past 11 pm or 12 am. I also saw Enter The Dragon with Bruce Lee there as well in 1973. I just can't remember what the second feature was. And I saw Cheech and Chong there as well live on stage in 1974. I would say just about everyone was high that evening.

Caught this on late night TV last week, and was amazed by what a great film it actually was. Never watched a Charles Bronson film, and figured I had him pegged.. But this really surprised me.

I'm gonna stick my neck out here and say The Mechanic is the best Charles Bronson film of them all. Certainly my fave.
Death Wish 1 & 2 spoke to everybody. The ultimate good guy vs bad guy in very relatable & realistic circumstances.
I don't want to play favorites, but...I did like the first couple of "Death Wish" movies, and also LOVED the movie "Hard Times." Amazing movie.

I think Bishop has a death wish, all those panic attacks, depressing life and loneliness finally got to him. That's why he played along and was just waiting to see how his protégé/boy lover would kill him. Jinno J. Really, so you think the end part where the Transporter McPlastic Man dodges the blast was a better ending? They are essentially the same, apart from in this version there is some acting going on, and in the remake the mechanics apprentice is a charisma free idiot.
+Boredand Faartless Nostalgia is a bitch the remake is alot better with better soundtracks, even the acting was good ( last scene was alot better also ) but yea guess they should've just killed 'em both in the end.
Sorry but Jason Statham and Ben Foster haven't got the acting quality of Charles Bronson and Jan-Michael Vincent. Plus: They let Bishop surive. Come on, this is a cheap hollywood ending where heroes always survive because people want this "good-feeling cinema".
Didn't like remake. Jason Statham is a decent actor but not in the league of Charles Bronson.
