    I'm far from a fan of ROG but nobody can deny he had a helll of a sweet right peg. I'm only surprised he didn't finish out his career with a stint at Man. Utd - what with his habit of snatching victory from defeat with the clock in the red 😊😆

  • @jonnybaynham1689
    @jonnybaynham1689 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wilkinson is the drop goal king. Doesn't matter how many attempts, he holds the record for most scored and he managed to freely score them more than anyone else. ROG scored some great winners but there's doing it at the death to win a crucial game and there's doing it to keep the points ticking over and take the game away. ROG did the former. Wilko could do the former and the latter.
    His DG against Saracens for Toulon was a classic example, as his kicking had taken the game completely away from them and the ease with which he banged the DG over took all the remaining wind out of Saracens

    • @AndrewDavidForde
      @AndrewDavidForde  3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Is he though? I know he's scored a lot of drop goals but that's mainly because he attempted so many. In terms of significance, I'd argue that O'Gara is more so - just look at Wales '03, Argentina '04, Wales '09, Northampton '11, Castres '11 to win the game. All of these attempts were a single attempt in the last minute and would have cost them the game had O'Gara missed. Whereas with Wilkinson, the only significant drop goal as such was '03, where he'd already missed three drop goals in the same game...

    • @ahdhhren204
      @ahdhhren204 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andrew Forde What about the one he scored against saracens or the two he dropped in a semi final against france just because they aren’t match winners doesn’t mean they weren’t on the highest stage of rugby

    • @AndrewDavidForde
      @AndrewDavidForde  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@ahdhhren204 I never at any point said Wilkinson didn't score drop goals at the highest stage of rugby. But had those drop goals you mentioned not been scored, his team still would have won the match - and more significantly so Wilkinson wasn't under anywhere near the same amount of pressure for those kicks as O'Gara was for the drop goals that I mentioned.

    • @newspaper9949
      @newspaper9949 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andrew Forde I usually agree with you on most occasions, but Wilkinson’s WC winning drop goal trumps any of Ronan “gifted the game to the bokks” o’gara.

    • @AndrewDavidForde
      @AndrewDavidForde  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@newspaper9949 And that's completely fair enough, I agree that Wilkinson's drop goal in '03 was probably one of the most significant drop goals in Rugby history, with Sexton's vs. France also up there, but in my opinion, I believe O'Gara's ability to nail his only drop goal attempt of the match from 40m out in a do or die situation trumps Wilkinson's drop goal record. It's a completely subjective matter (that can never truly be proven) and I'm sure someone else will argue that there's another fly-half who's much better. But, I don't think him conceding the penalty against the Boks in '09 negates his drop-kicking abilities.
      We're all entitled to an opinion but as the video creator my opinion is always going to bear some sort of reflection on the video title, nature of the video etc, so apologies for that!

      @Paddy le Blanc I didn't know he had accomplished all that. But I still don't think he would make even my Top 10 fly halfs of all time. But hey, just some random blokes on YT's opinion. Take it easy fella.

    The only way O’Gara can be called the king of the drop goal is if Jannie de Beer or Johnny Wilkinson never existed.

    Drop goal king? Really? I’ve heard of this guy called Jonny Wilkinson, he’s supposed to have a decent drop kick

      He was able to win and lose a game by himself. More highs than downs though.
