We’re Jeni and Rich. We’re really just a couple of average Joes. In a nutshell we met and married in our early 20s; I graduated from college in my late 20s; adopted two cats and a dog in the late 90s; sold a house and bought a new house in our mid 30s; then sold the new house and moved onto a sailboat in our early 40s. In between all that we had a bunch of fun like camping, scuba diving, watching hockey games (Go Red Wings!), concerts, traveling, spear fishing, restoring a 1963 Chevy II Nova; spending time with family and friends. A few years ago we decided to lay off all the fun-having to fix up this old boat. We figure if we put our noses to the grindstone for a few years, we’ll be able to travel for a few years and do all the fun things we’ve missed.
Glad I'm not the only one going through this. Trying to get my alternator alignment right and I also need a fabbed arm since when it's shimmed correctly, the alternator arm is perfectly in alignment with the alternator ear top. Giant PITA
It always seems to be the case that a 2 hour boat job becomes a one week event.
This may have been covered in a previous video but you mentioned 25% of capacity or something. What is your battery back size? LA? AGM? Lithium? What are you going to do with all those 250 amps? Great video. Thank you!
We have an 800 Ah lithium battery bank (Battle Born brand). Twenty-five percent of that is 200 amps. The Beta 43 came with a 170 amp alternator so we upgraded to a 250 amp alternator. It will run more efficiently than the 170 amp one. Part 2 of the install is coming out this week and we explain a little more why we upgraded.
Is it just an optical conclusion or did I see @5:02 a 2" foot mount with a bushing to extend it to fit a saddle mount? Seems like you could have used the white alternator from the Perkins.
No, the white alternator was a single foot and the red one is a dual foot.
@@svrambleon But what I was seeing at 5:02 was that if you remove the spacer on the back side of the mount what is left is a 2" single foot mount.

What was wrong with the original alternator that came with the engine? All you’re doing is charging your batteries.
With the capacity of our battery bank (800Ahs) we wanted a larger alternator to minimize engine run time. The original alternator was 70 amps and it would take 6ish hours to charge it up from 50%. The bigger one is more efficient, has an external voltage regulator, and it runs cooler.
Do your old alternators work?
Yes, the one that came with the engine (170 amps) works fine and the one from our old Perkins also works, but doesn’t fit the Beta 43. We upgraded the 170 amp for efficiency. We’ll have to run the engine less, it will run cooler and put more amps into the batteries in less time. Part 2 of the install will be out this week and we explain a little more.
