    Hey AB. Great collab and happy Veterans Day. Not sure its right to say happy. I'm from Denmark, and we dont have a "real" celebration day for veterans. I stopped being a professional solder in 2013, and was based out of Camp Bastion. Did two tours.. What I saw and did doing that 18 months is something I wish I could forget.. The military, if it's US or DK did not provide the info needed before getting shipped to Afghan... I went home after a IED went of on the convoy I was protecting. I was in the front car. The IED went of and hit the third car. the MVP was in the second. My first gunner on top was killed by a young adult, so I had to take over. I emptied one ammo box from the 50cal on top against the Taliban ambush. When I got home I found out the houses where the attacks/ambush came from was not only Taliban fuckers. They used kids and women as shields.. Shit this massage got way to long and personal. I just had to get if of my chest. But I'm good now, It took some years but it was war. Atleast at the time.. And now Taliban took the country back in 14-21 days, what a waste of US/DK forces...

    Hi, my dad was in the Vietnam war, he's 74 and lives with PTSD, I tried to enroll to the Australian army but was declined,
    I 'was' as fit as a fiddle but I have aspergers, OCD, ADHD, GAD and treatment resistant depression as well as a hormone unbalance and hypothyroidism (needless to say I'm on meds), I've not since tried though, I worked in retail for several years and I'm now unemployed, looking for work as always, but I always respect those who fought for our country (australia) but of course the ones from other countries who fought for our freedom! Since being unemployed I've tried the most inexpensive ways to drink and that's brewing your own, this is how I found your channel and others. I brew beer, all grain and extract, ciders, meads and wines etc. But cheers, I really like this video!! 👍🍻

    I like the idea of these 12 lb Doppel-Brau because you get to save on electricity costs than having to perform the same procedure 2 times with only half the ingredients. I am working my way up to this goal as my brewing experience increases. My grain bag atm is too small. The mashing kettle can accomodate this many grains?

  • @pmhartel
    @pmhartel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great video! Great job using your platform to bring light to an important topic! On the beer side I'm interested in the issues you brought up about this batch.
    Does mash thickness impact conversion rate? I always do full volume no sparge mashes and found I need 60+min mashes to hit 70+% eff.
    I've never done a mash out. What is the benefit? Tonight is going to be my first brew on my new electric setup, so I now have the ability to do step mashes and mash out. Might give a mash out a try. Also a good reminder to verify the temp using my handheld thermometer.

    • @TheApartmentBrewer
      @TheApartmentBrewer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm glad you enjoyed it, I'm glad we can all make a difference together. The mash thickness does affect conversion rate. If you have two different mashes, one full volume and one less than full volume, with the same grain bill, you have the same amount of enzymes but different water levels. Basically with a full volume mash, it takes longer for all the enzymes to travel around to find all the starches to convert vs the thicker mash. I too normally mash full volume for 60 minutes, but with a thicker mash on the same size grain bill I could have it done faster. I know a lot of people (including Y&TB) use a short thick mash followed up by a sparge instead of the full volume mash with no sparge like I do. Two different ways to achieve the same goal. If you really want to get crazy good efficiency, do a long mash with a slightly thicker liquor to grist ratio and then mashout and sparge. The mashout step helps denature all the enzymes and also aids in lautering.

    Can you put in too much yeast nutrient? I'm always worried about messing up my water profile, because it's effectively compounds dissolved into the water, so it affects the water composition, right? I've put 5 gallons worth in a yeast starter and that tasted mighty salty before I mixed it into the batch.

    • @TheApartmentBrewer
      @TheApartmentBrewer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, just try to keep it to the recommended dosage (varies by manufacturer). Too much yeast nutrient can actually be toxic to the yeast, kveik is the only one where you should double up on it. It won't affect water profile if you add it at the end or during fermentation
