I’ve heard of people making a full on smoke beer and then putting a new beer on the yeast cake to get a more subtle smoke character but I hadn’t heard of the smoke malt started, definitely interesting!
I actually got my inspiration from Schlenkerla brewery in Bamberg. They do that with their smoked Helles. I think a smoked malt starter would work really well on a pale lager. I might try it eventually.
It was excellent!! A great concept and not overly smoky. I'm not a huge fan of full on rauchbiers but this was a tasteful (and tasty) execution of limited smoke. Plus the base Baltic porter was delicious!
@@Eagle1846ytownwould you mind share the recepie if thats okay? I am trying to do something similar and dont know how much smoke grain to use. I want it to be party of all flavours with noticable smoke but not overshadowing other chocolate, roasty malty notes.
My wife and I just opened a small batch brewery in Lasalle, Ontario Canada and you and Treehouse have been a huge inspiration in our journey. Seeing you collab with them is awesome. Just want to say thank you for the inspiration in beer making.
Fat Lou Brew Co. We are very small just starting out so it's only a grab and go retail store front as of now. Hopefully to grow into a tap room and one day Tree House size lol.
That’s awesome. I’m really happy you guys got to meet up and talk when it comes to brewing beer treehouses style really speaks to me about chasing flavor profiles. I don’t care about the rules. I want something that’s fun & yummy.
Right on! Brewing something "to style" is lots of fun and usually makes great beer, but brewing something that's different than everyone else's beer and tastes incredible is a very different thing!
Glad you were able to go to Tree House! I was able to befriend a Local brewery and the conversations were always outstanding. I had them try my homebrew and got feedback. As a result, I was invited to come in and Brew on their 10BBL system. What a TREAT! and as Tree House says, it is about making memories. Every time I homebrew what I helped brew on the 10BBL system, I go back to that day's memories.
That is awesome! It's always a great time when you as a homebrewer get to spend some time working on a big system and getting to know the differences between scales. Plus 90% of pro brewers started out as homebrewes so they love it to!
I might be coming late to this, I didn't realize there was a "debate.". My understanding is that a Cold IPA can use ale yeast or lager yeast, as long as they're relatively clean. A Cold IPAs main job is to highlight the dry hop flavor by thinning and drying the body using malt adjuncts. In contrast, an IPL must use lager yeast and might not have any dry hop additions and is unlikely to have adjuncts like corn or rice. I remember reading an article with the brewer from Wayfinder who used this rough explanation. In my head, a Cold IPA is a crisp version of a Hazy IPA but with a different malt bill. A IPL is a catch all for older school IPAs that used lager yeast.
Hey Señor BruSho. Better start packing 💼🧳. I can honestly see you in a Tree House video. Just like Steve you guys are down to earth and no BSing around. I still have not the chance to try a Tree House brew.😢. But will try Steve's Julius clone soon. Salud from Phoenix, AZ 🍺🍺
After many years of watching from afar, my wife and I were eventually able to visit Treehouse and it is every bit as awesome as I thought it would be. Incredible beer in a beautiful woodland setting.
I'm planning a trip in August to Tree House. I have been watching their content for a while. Congrats on getting picked! Make sure you bring back some of their beer. I plan on it! Cheers!
Wow! The scale of Tree House is phenomenal! Quite frustrating on this side of the pond that we don't get to taste much craft beer from the US, at least in my neck of the woods. Great content as always!
Thanks so much for making this video and sharing with us. Your channel is one of the best, and I have learned a ton from you. Great job on everything, and please keep up the excellent work.
This is great. I had the opportunity to brew with the guys at Browns Brewing in Troy NY. A buddy of mine won a Fun Day Brew Day raffle and invited me. They brew one of our recipes. A Barleywine. It was a long day and it made me realize that big scale brewing is for young guys. We had a hand in every part of it though. From crushing the grains to tasting from the fermenter every two weeks until it was ready to serve.
He comes across as a really humble and down to earth guy. I would like to make a trip over there and experience the treehouse brewery. I’ll be putting that on the list for sure.
Just found this video and channel, so I subbed. I saw the Treehouse video, congrats. This video made me want a trip to Treehouse, I live only 10 minutes from the one in Deerfield.
This was an amazing video... thank you for sharing your tour with us! I have brewed my version of Tree House and your version, both were out of this world. I can not wait to try Tree House Hazy at Tree House.... thanks again
I am really jealous! That sounds like an incredible experience. Tree House is on my list of places I really want to visit if I ever find myself able to travel to the area.
A truly great video here Steve! You asked great questions and you are well spoken! Keep this up! I guarantee you’ll be working for treehouse or something like that in the near future.
Cool video. Enjoying TH tasting videos and came across yours and your insight (Aug. 2024, Kent/Seatle, WA) I can't get TH here but like WA and OR drinking laws and growler takeaways .. But each State is different and have to finess those differences. Thanks for your interview with Nate at TH !
Thanks for the tour and thanks to Nate. I'm way out west and not sure I'll ever get the Tree House, but if I get to the Boston area it's on the top of my list.
What a great opportunity you had Steve! If you get down the Cape check out their Sandwich location. It’s right on the water and beautiful location. I go there all the time.
I enjoyed seeing you on Treehouse's video! This is a great companion video. Charlton is impressive, but every treehouse location is unique. Might be fun to make a video(s) on the experience each location has to offer. Thanks and Cheers!
Steve, was this your first visit to TreeHouse? Just curious… during the spring thru fall time; I bring my wife and dogs and just hang out for a few hours and just relax and enjoy what Treehouse has created for us to enjoy. Love your channel and this was a great video. Hope to see you out and about one of these days. Cheers Erik
Those wile guys at brulusophy have recommended dosing a little sulfite to packaging to head off some oxidation. But for a keg transfer. The dosing per can would be a bit tricky. Sounds like it came out ok as is.
Good for you! Congratulations. And for Pete's sake, when you showed that can storage which looked like the room the Top Men stored the Ark of the Covenant, I ask, why the hell can I not get a Treehouse beer anywhere?
It's truly mind boggling how huge that place is. I'm not gonna speak for their business decisions but they're very successful with their current model and they are the size they are just purely form demand. Still trying to catch up in fact.
How'd you miss their bottle options. I was very ignorant to their vast other options. It was feeling like a disaster was coming with not branching out past hazy's. Oh they are branched, pun intended. Nice visit and content. They have this stuff together. It's refreshing to hear nate prefers a translucent juicy version. Not cloudy. I'm intrigued on their milk stout process and ingredients.
Great video...always enjoy your content, looking forward to the last piece of this puzzle...Nate is due to drop in any day to taste my Kiwi home brew 🍺🍺

I really asked him that question as sort of a joke. I agree though, most beers that are sold as "Cold IPA" including the original Wayfinder beer are imperial adjunct lagers at heart. But Jack's Abbey started the IPL and that's very close to home!
