i love your analysis of these episodes so much! you have so much empathy and you gave so much great detail to all the super impactful parts and even the small details like the background having “a game” in it LOL you also made me think more about where exactly pearl’s self-sacrificing comes from and in some of the other reactions, how the show make references to different types of queer relationships and analogies to coming out which makes me love and feel even more connected to the show!! so excited to watch the rest of your reactions youre awesome 🙌
I have a loooot of thoughts on the Rose/Pearl dynamic, and honestly I still haven't been able to 100% settle on some of my opinions. But that's what's great about this show- they portray such realistic and complex relationships without outright telling the viewer what they're supposed to feel about them. I feel this so hard. I wrote a story about the very early days of Pearl and Rose and I've gotten lots of lovely feedback about it, including the suggestion that I tag it as a rose/pearl story, which I eventually did just to get eyes on it, but part of me was like... just because it's about the beginning of a romance doesn't mean that it's necessarily romantic, or endorsing of the couple in question...
Every couple of months I'll get on a Steven Universe YT reaction kick and search out new people reacting. Generally to the movie, so such a pleasant surprise I found your channel. So few people actually have anything substantial to say, so your empathetic and in depth dialogues I really love. I'll definitely be going through the whole series with you, can not wait for you to get to the movie too!
And now Pearl's level of devotion makes more sense, since by now you know about Pearls normal function in gem society... and that level of "die if necessary" is very bodyguard or soldier style which might make sense in other contexts, but not when it's among friends (which is where Connie and Steven develop a tandem style that protects both of them). Passing on battlefield trauma... just like a lot of parents do in their civilian lives, and how that causes damage. This show is brilliant on a rewatch. Pearl seems to use a thicker battle rapier or fencing saber. Rose's sword is basically a kind of thicker saber or similar, might not be curved enough to call a cutlass, although those distinctions get pretty blurry. The show really drip feeds you the background and traumas of the older characters, so you DO understandably get upset at them... just so it can hit harder when you get moments like this.
Well, Gems dont have a gender. They are correctly referred to as “they”, but for simplicity's sake they are referred to as she, due to many factors of course; mainly due to the fact that most gems look and sound feminine.
Same. The numbering is so annoying. I've seen the second half of "season 1" referred to as season 2 in tv reviews from when they were broadcast and I believe in quotes from the crew in the book I have.
Lol if you payd attention to the song it was clearly hinting at Connie giving her life for Steven. I remember watching this for the first time and being like uuhhh Pearl is low key brainwashing Connie.
Yea I believe in this universe American expansion ended with Kansas, which is why that's where their version of "hollywood" is. Who knows what country(s) own the land west of Kansas.

I wouldn't be surprised if Mexico reach higher in this universe tho, but all the way to Canada? idk. And what about Canada, where does that end? We're just not given enough info about the world to make an accurate map with country borders.

But I swear we temporarily see a map at some point in the series where Mexico is called Aqua Mexico, or else I dreamed it haha

Pearl's outfit got updated fairly early actually, when she was poofed by her hologram in Episode 16 of season 1!
Exactly! The gems only update their outfits when they poof. Amethyst got hers this episode, Garnet got hers after Jasper poofed her.
Yes the statue has always been missing a hand. We actually saw it get dissolved by the Centipeedle's acid in episode 1
