I am just reciting from memory now, but he does do all of these moves. He just doesn't scream them out like your typical shonen anime, instead going with show-don't tell. Or in this case, show- don't scream. But, I have to rewatch it, to be sure.
The whole scene is pointless because at the end, in this OVA, Kenshin downright _kills_ Shishio-he slams the bottom area of his sword into his skull and it splits in half. It completely defiles the character’s most important philosophy, everything he stands for and his vow to never kill again to Tomoe. It feels like a slap in the face towards fans and the source material.

@@misterhimura036 thanks. I understand that you are having trouble sleeping, you know, having ptsd nightmare of your sister getting killed by hitokiri and all that, so i take that as a compliment.
The moment with Seiku and Iori is a climactic moment where Kenshin is given a choice impossible in its gravity, and that being to choose between the final vow made to his wife as well as a wider sense of his personal bushi-do as a samurai, or accept the death of a child, and of course, Kenshin being himself, chooses to save Iori at the cost of having to betray his beliefs. And I think that is why he visits his wife's grave at the end of the fight, to ask forgiveness for accepting, albeit with noble reasons, what amounts to an assassination contract and for failing in his vow. I think by making the Shin Kyoto Arc, in its rushed and reduced fashion, as opposed to attempting to tell the story of the Jinchu Arc, is where the story failed. Kyoto is a tale of apex villainy which rises higher and higher and becomes, fittingly, a raging inferno, but Jinchu is a personal tale which sinks lower, and lower and lower, exposing the true depths of the story. Neither Kenshin nor Kaoru can reach the conclusion of their story without telling the Jinchu arc. Leaving the series without the personal exposition is Star Wars story without "I am your father" or without Anakin's backstory.
I just finished watching New Kyoto Arc... My jaw DROPPED when Shishio's skull was sliced in two by Kenshin, what the heck did I just watch? I wanted to love this adaptation, but can't stop thinking of how many dumb things were introduced and so many key scenes/storylines were just tossed aside. Great review!
Adri Ojeda I don’t even think I made it that far. This scene that I talked about was enough for me to see it’s failure. Otherwise i think I woulda talked about it here too. Thanks for watching!
I watched it by buying the blue ray on eBay, sorry I’m not much help on it. The OVA is a couple episodes long I believe. When I made this video I only watched part 1 and didn’t get to the end of it.
@@keii0n It's completely shrug off that kenshin straight up kills shishio lol It almost feels like a "detail'; like Kenshin hitting Shishio's helmet enough for the pressure to blow his head open is just happenstance and kenshin's vow was never broken
@@vincejalbuena543 you can find it on some pirate animes I'm sure; not worth it however. The whole thing is only 2 long episodes (~40 minutes); sometimes matched together to make one single movie-length OVA (~1 and a half hour) Ironically the first one, the one being discussed on this video, being the better one.
Chris Cannon thanks Chris. Unfortunately I’m so inconsistent about uploads and creating due to school and stuff but I’m still trying to find a balance that I haven’t found yet.
ItsumoListless No problem bud. Same here, life outside of TH-cam's more important, but I'm sure you'll find a way to balance both soon, maybe in this Summer.
In my opinion, the movie tried to take it into a realistic-ish direction in the scene with Cho. Misao with her ninja skills and Kenshin keeping Cho busy could actually have tried saving Iyori. She's a ninja after all and trained by the legendary Oniwaban. Also, it's reasonable to not screaming out the name of your attacks for obvious reasons. The scene would have made sense and taken a good realistic turn that the movie was aiming for.. Had it not been for that swirl. Seriously, that one swirl ruined it for me. Kenshin did it in order to dodge Cho's blade but in this one... Bruh. What battojutsu is this?? Just rush over and hit him, you don't need the swirl. Also when Kenshin decides to check the blade, Cho why didn't you attack? He was right there wide open. Furthermore, Kenshin is a hypocrite in this OVA. The sakabato is not a tool for death he says, then Shishio’s head goes sploosh.
Eclise The Traveller I started reading your comment thinking you were gonna give me grief about complaining about the swirl but I’m glad you agree with me lol
In the anime, that wasn't his battoujutsu technique with which he finished Cho. It was his Ryu Kan Sen Tsumuji. He even yelled it out as he executed it. The Ryu Kan Sen group of techniques, as shown throughout the series, are counterattacks. Versus Cho, it was used to counter that attack with the Hakujin no Tachi. Against Aoshi in the Temple of the Six Shrines in Hoji's office, it was used to counter Aoshi's thrust attack, but Aoshi blocked the counter with his second Kodachi, protecting his back. Against Shishio, it was actually used in a combo instead of as a standalone counter, but the combo itself was a counter: after Shishio attempted to use the Guren kaina on Kenshin for the second time, Kenshin slammed the base of the hilt into Shishio's fist, causing him to misfire the Guren Kaina; then Kenshin executed a Ruy Tsui-Sho Sen, which is a combination of the Ryu Tsui Sen and the Ryu Sho Sen; finally, Kenshin hits him with three variants of the Ryu Kan Sen. In the OVA, I have no idea what that was supposed to be. But it wasn't fitting.
I liked Cho in the manga.. In the cartoon he doesnt have the same soul and in the movies... no1 has except Hajime Saito cus he basically needs to play the arrogant bitch but other than that is a shit show of actors..
You said it well man. The original anime is so deep and dense. When the father of the child selfishly tries to save his child ignoring Kenshin and Misau and the old man react differently towards it. The situation and the people and their emotions are as close to reality as it could possibly be. And the entire thing unfolds so beautifully. I have not watched this one and I might not since you informed me that I would be disappointed. And I difinitely am. This anime is the most beautiful and realistic thing I have ever witnessed on a screen. Up to the end of Shishio arc I mean. And the character of Kenshin is the man I aspire to be. So deep and yet so simple
vagabond I feel you 100%! Kenshin is such a good guy, always putting the needs of others in front of his own. He should be what more people strive to be! Oh and also, I do think it’s worth skipping unless you’re that curious about it. But it doesn’t do itself any favors by changing so much of what the original did.
@@keii0n yah I shall skip it. I will look for the manga that continues after the Kyoto arc that this channel made a video about...as soon as I get some time on my hands
You nailed it so perfectly. Also, there's really no understandable reason why they would do an abridged version of the Kyoto arc when the Jinchu arc was sitting there completed in manga form and unanimated.
It fails because no one wanted a retread of the Kyoto Arc. When I heard about a new RK anime, I thought we were finally getting the Jinchuu Arc, but noooooo!
I haven't seen the Kyoto Arc *$5 on Right Stuf at the moment. Don't know how long it will be on sale* and honestly forgot about it. When I told my best friend they were doing a new Kenshin series she was worried because of this Arc. After your well detailed and clear explanation I can see why. The original so beautifully showed the tension and conflict it's maddening how the new one could fumble it so much. Positive thoughts can only go so far but hopefully the new series will be more faithful to the manga.
Yeah, I think they tried to condense this long intricate arc into that small Tun time but also just missed things along the way. It wasn’t the right way to celebrate the series at the time. I’m really excited and optimistic about the new series. I’m really hoping this gets the “Brotherhood” treatment. The original anime is good, I love it, but it doesn’t really get great until Kyoto. Maybe we’ll finally get Jinchuu!!
I actually love the final scene where Kenshin and Shishio fought on Rengoku battleship instead Hiei Mountain because it still make sense for battered up Kenshin, Sano, Saito and Aoshi to escape along with Anji, Sojiro and Hoji.
people sometime missunderstood thing while doing a new versions of things... they think that they need to put their signature on it... that doing like the past is a mistake... an they should aways change things to "feel" more fit on their taste/time... that was the mistake they have done on the arc... shame.
Im only 1 who want kenshin to be batosai again?? I want to see how batosai was so great and love to see no mercy at all on his opponent.. No odds.. Only full potential machine killer..
Richard Manzano I mean I get it! But it’s not the point of his story arc. If you haven’t seen the Trust and Betrayal OVAs I recommend them. It takes place during the war and it’s about the events that lead him down the path of pacifist.
While I agree that the Cho part could had been handled much much MUCH better, that's not the failing part for me. Because one of the best parts is when Gramps fight Aoshi - a scene that went on for faaar too long in the anime, is condensed to it's rawest form of only lasting around 30 seconds and it's so good. Especially when you see the slicing and then just a second later Misao opens the door and is relieved to see them fine, only to see Gramps burst blood from every slice in that very moment. I really was not a fan of the Kyoto story arc because of how they'd draw out every episode with pointless drivel for 15 min where a character insists of standing around and mono-logging for themselves about the other one's attacks and stuff. I also really liked that Shishio killed off Usui. I thought that scene was fantastic and dramatic with it's soundtrack playing and all. BUT the part where Shin Kyoto Hen truly fails, is the climactic battle. Not that it takes place on the ship, I thought that was a great ending to it instead of that damn mountain retreat. No, Kenshin bonks Shishio on the head where Saito had stabbed Shishio earlier, and Shishio's head splits open like a goddamn coconut in two pieces - AND THEN HE PUSHES BOTH HALVES OF HIS SKULL BACK TOGETHER TO TRY AND FIGHT A FUTILE BATTLE MORE! When I saw that the first time, it caught me off-guard that I just welped out " _OH MY GOOOOD!_ " and I've seen MD Geist and GenoCyber for crying out loud and THIS is the scene that comes out of left field?! So out of character for Kenshin since he quite literary, kills Shishio with that bonk, and just such a damn weird scene in general. Though it can be argued that Kenshin should, would, and must leave his oath behind in order to kill Shishio since he otherwise would never stop, and one can argue that the group are responsible for Shishio's death by self-immolation since they prevent him from retreating to hide in a bathtub - It was a must do situation. But this scene? Shin Kyoto Hen wasn't very good, except the soundtrack, but this scene was a complete misunderstanding on their part.
"I really was not a fan of the Kyoto story arc because of how they'd draw out every episode with pointless drivel for 15 min where a character insists of standing around and mono-logging for themselves about the other one's attacks and stuff. " I love because of that.
The live action did way better. I say it was good, they introduced the high heaven style techniques in a creative way, they fixed Saito's ability to fly in the last 4 movies and that was an improvement
Well, what saved the situation is that he was performing the *Battōjutsu* strike (Unsheathing Technique - at the same time his body performed the *Ryūkansen Tsumuji* spin move). Which is impossible to do *against* the curve of the blade. You can only perform the move WITH the curve, meaning normally blade-side-out. So the strike HAD to be done the way it was. Otherwise he'd have to draw the blade, reposition it, THEN strike with a much slower and less powerful motion. And as far as he knew, there was no time for that. So thankfully, the move he was nicknamed after as a killer (Battōsai - The Unsheather) destined him to stay on his chosen path of peace in this decisive moment. ...Except in this Original Video Abomination of course. 😵
Is a whip sword and is a real weapon too, It looks like the new anime style was trying to hard to make it look realistic. The display of the fight sequences were good but it drifts too far off from the OVA, they look like regular fighters is like any normal person can jump in, unlike the original where it makes it clear these guys are so skillful they display superhuman feats that highlights them as the well trained fighters, assassins and long time war veterans that the show was talking about.
meganabaja oh yes! I love the way you put that. The original does make it evident that they posses super human like strength. I wish I made that note when writing this video. I also didn’t know chous sword existed. That’s really cool.
Oh chucks thanks, I was trying to express a little of what it looks like to me with out over complicating it. Is not just these show, lately the new anime style is just too soft, slow and sluggish, which is the expression I think i was looking for. I can go on but it would take too long. Hey you can still do more videos.
meganabaja I’m not sure I completely agree with you on that but you definitely have a different perspective on things and I like it. If you ever decide to make a channel or blog, come let me know. I’d be more than happy to support.
Jody's Movie and Anime Channel thank you for your comment! I think you’re better off reading the manga or watching the anime instead. I only got as far as this fight goes and others commented saying that the Shishio fight is even worst but I don’t know anything about it.
I mean. I agree with the analysis of the scene, the original was so much better. But damn I wanted more Kenshin even if it was a remake. Now I just found out, the rest is on hold indefinitely because of the charges against the author...
Yoga Yasahardja in the original version he was prepared to become a killer again. He was ready to slay blood to save the life of a child. It just so happened that the blade was a reverse edge. Kenshin was extremely lucky to not have broken his vow in that instant and this version fails to show that.
Hey dude I was discussing with a friend but the hokkaido manga is a top seller in japanese book releases and with the live action, if they do a new kenshin anime, maybe a hunter x hunter or fruit basket type reboot that follow the manga more closely, or atleast the jinchuu arc, what are the chances if it will get licensed over here in the west and dubbed, i know viz dropped the hokkaido arc, im curious if in a few years they will pick it up again I understand they are trying to not touch it with the current climate and watsuki arrest 2 years ago
That would be really cool! I know that he continued working on Hokkaido after sometime away since the arrest, but I’d like the chance to read it. As far as a new animation in the vain of Hunter x Hunter or Fruit Baskets. I can see it being something that will most likely be dubbed and localized here in the west. Rurouni Kenshin is a huge Shōnen series for some company like Funimation or Crunchyroll to pass up on licensing. Unless they really want to stick to their guns about not supporting watsuki’s work, but I doubt it. I really hope this happens someday!
@@aden1430 considering I don't know which story you're asking me about, yes. But I would suggest watching the original RK and reading the hunter x hunter manga. I haven't had time to watch this OVA. But the first two arcs of Ruroni Kenshin pay off in the Kyoto arc's villains. So patience works for RK. I wouldn't watch it further than the Kyoto conclusion
One thing I haven't seen mentioned in the comments is in the fight, Chou throws a sword at Iori??? He's kinda sadistic but he's not evil, he likes to fight a lot. He figured Kenshin wouldn't want to fight him so he used a hostage to goad him. In the first anime and the manga, he would occasionally threatens to attack his hostage to trigger Kenshin when he'd hesitate. So why would he decide to deliberately harm the baby??? It doesn't make sense. Everything about that scene flops, even the antagonist's motives.
I believe it was the piano arrangement of Departure. It’s a song heavily used during Kyoto and it has different arrangements. All the music I use it pulled from TH-cam.
For me, it just a series to enjoy and not to be taken that seriously. What really bother me are most fans which like to analyze deeply and point out the flaws. These always happen with popular series or movies like condor heroes series or Jin Yong series. Some fans even make up conjecture how Sword Demon come about. Back to Samurai x. How can a series don't have flaws after so many years of airing. Just enjoy the show and NEVER compare it with the comic or novel you read. It never have the same feel. Just my own opinion though. BTW I always enjoy watching Kenshin just like I enjoy watching Takumi Fujiwara of Initial D. Both are so cool.
@@keii0n if cho wanted the baby dead lori would be dead what is the batoosai more afraid of cho than he is of himself not to mention shishio who is several times more skilled than cho. Also shishio is kenshins equal in several respects save morality and fighting styles
Everyone is complaining about Kenshin slamming Shishio's head, but how about Komagata Yumi? This OVA shat on the concept of Yumi being the unfortunate woman so degraded by her circumstances she was willing to sacrifice herself because that's all she can do for Shishio! What did this OVA do? Make Shishio tell her he will force her to live, in simpler terms, he wants her to live. That wasn't so Shishio of him! He viewed Yumi as weak despite loving her and said he will kill her anyway in battle.
You only highlighted one sequence? Did you forget that in this OVA, Shishio's head was slice in half but he managed to merged it back and fight Kenshin? For me that's another scene to ruin this OVA.
To me it felt forced the fact that neither Kenshin, nor Seiku guy didn't take a look at the sword and also Kenshin couldn't find a use for it without killing the opponent. So this is why to me this was one of the few good scenes from the OVA where things made sense.
Everyone: “Oh my god New Kyoto Arc SUCKS it’s awful it should never have been made it should burn in hell.” Me: hey at least I get to see Kenshin in new modern animation. It’s sadly all we have in terms on modern Kenshin, well, anything nowadays ever since “you know who” got arrested. Honestly this OVA should be appreciated on that merit alone. It’s the ONLY modern animated Kenshin we have, so for me it’s either take it leave it. The original still exists, it’s not going anywhere. The only reason why I’m as easy on New Kyoto arc as I am is simply because, I just want to see Kenshin in the modern era with clean modern animation and this OVA delivered on that. It’s not perfect, but like I said if you want perfection, then at least we still have the original.
I hear what you’re saying and that’s cool! I tried to go into it with that mindset when I watched it cause I had heard about the negativity that it got. I just couldn’t when it got this scene wrong. But I’m happy for you and I will never try to take that away from you! Im happy that you like it. :)
@@keii0n I just wish we could get that perfect modern animated Kenshin adaptation. Had the author not been who he is, and had things been different we could’ve gotten the best modern adaptation of this arc and everything else Kenshin related, and maybe the last arc could’ve been animated. Like, Rurouni Kenshin Brotherhood or something like that, or something like the Shaman King reboot. And maybe someday we will. Maybe someday someone else will take over this series, and we’ll get that perfect animated adaptation. Until then, this and the movies is all we got. So, hey there’s that at least.
@@keii0n I’ll give New Kyoto Arc this though. It gave us one of the most unintentionally hilarious moments in the OVA where Kenshin has a sword stabbed through his and Aoshi just comes in like “I’ve waited a long time for this.” And Kenshin just looks at him like “dude, really? I have a sword stuck in my arm and the ship we’re on is literally on fire and burning, and you want a fight NOW!?” “Yes” “you know compared to you and Shishio I’m actually wondering who’s the real crazy one.”
I’ve been saying the same thing about a brotherhood style remake for Kenshin. The series and this story definitely deserves to be properly told. But I don’t see it happening any time soon for the reason you mentioned. Yeah, at least we have the movies.
I wish they have not revive the kyoto arc. There's no need to do this. Just play the original. Personally the original series of Samurai X is still the best. Watch it. You'll see what I mean.
Have you played the PSP game yet? If you haven't just emulate it. I have several gameplay videos of different RK games on my channel but I can tell you right now - Both PSP fighting games are really kinda bad. If there's any RK game you aught to play, it's the PS2 game Enjoy! Kyoto Rinne!, and the fan-Mugen Game which is fantastic. I love that Shishio killed Usui. I thought that was a great scene, coupled with a new style of that theme whose name eludes me. But it's so beautiful. Now, the scene with Kenshin bonking Shishio on the head so his skull split open had me going " _OH MY GOD!_ " and laughing hysterically because it was so absurd. It's not a good OVA, in fact I'd call it the worst, but that was... fun. Only redeeming quality is killing Usui and the new song. Oh and the scene where Misao enters only to see old man splat into a pool of blood was superbly remade!
Zeithri your Take on the OVA is probably the most unique one that I’ve seen so far, it makes me want to rewatch this OVA from this different perspective. Absurdly Fun ehh? I think I can get behind that! Also, it’s a shame to hear the PSP games weren’t good.
@@keii0n - bonks Shishios head, splits it open - " _Oh damn, s-sorry man. Wow, who knew Shishio was such an egg head?_ " The new version of _Ishin Tenpuku Keikaku_ I believe it was with the violins is just, stunningly beautiful. Though I still fell the OVA was overall bad. And I never was a fan of the anime Kyoto arc either, thought it went on for some 10 episodes longer than it had to and too many deus ex machina stuff. But thats' me. The first game of the two... can't remember if it was Saisen or Kaisen, suffers from terrible slowdowns. The second one improves that but the basic gameplay is still just, rather boring. It really feels like they just wanted to grab some cash. I'd still recommend to check them out if you're curious. Otherwise, definitely try out Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan: Soul & Sword.
@@keii0n I don't know bro, i played the PSP games i think they were pretty good, they had good gameplay and balancing, it covers from Tokyo to Jinchuu, adding characters from the Shin Kyoto Hen and Reflections OVAS, you can also play as Kenshin and Kaoru's child Kenji, but that's just my opinion
You know the truth is I was really hoping for a better Rurouni Kenshin wandering Samurai what I'm on actually talking about is a whole new arc actually saw a new villains that's supposedly supposed to go with Rurouni Kenshin
Beautifully done analysis. You really help the audience appreciate the emotional impact of the original anime sequence, and how the OVA missed the whole point. Fantastic use of commentary, video editing, and use of one of the best songs from the TV series' soundtrack to bring out the thoughtful depth of that scene. I almost teared up and have watched it several times. Made me so nostalgic for when I first watched that series so long ago. 😭 But gosh! What was the point of this OVA?! Why remake what was already practically perfect? If they WERE gonna make changes to keep it interesting, why make TERRIBLE changes that only betray this as a cash-grab with no heart or soul to it, by people who obviously weren't even fans of the story?! Oh, I guess I just answered my own question. Cash-grab. 😣 If they were gonna use time, money, and talent animating anything, they should've FINALLY GIVEN US THE JINCHŪ ARC!!! But no, that would require translating stills to movement which takes imagination and directoral talent. They were clearly only capable of taking what was already moving, and going "K now let's do it different so it's not completely pointless to watch." Except the changes are... SO disrespectful to the characters. Like just from what little I glimpse and hear about, it's like they made Kenshin a bit of an asshole, who only uses the Sakabatō as a personal trademark but is still a run-of-the-mill swordsman who totally digs brutality. 😰 Heck, at this point they may as well have just gone "Welp, we've got the baby, and this sword's no good for you Chō, so have a nice day~!" and strolled off into the sunset. But nope, Kenshin's gotta DO A BARREL ROLL and add even more unnecessary injury to the poor guy than he already has. 😅 BECAUSE GOOD GUYS BEAT UP BADGUYS and that's what Rurōni Kenshin is aaaaall about, right? Hhhhhhhh... But yeah, thanks for hitting me in the nostalgia. I might need to dig out my discs and rewatch this show again. (I made several AMVs with it loooong ago on my other account. Ahh, low-quality subbed clips downloaded over dial-up, those were the days!)
Hi! Thanks for the comment! Your passion for Kenshin is well communicated through your words. I agree with a lot of your points! I had never considered Kenshin actually just saying “welp! This sword isn’t of use to you. Bye!” After they saved the baby and shown the Sakabato. Makes me wonder how that would’ve gone down afterwards haha Anyway! I’m rewatching Kyoto right now on my spare time, showing it to a newcomer, and it’s still such a blast! I also have a chapter break down series for Kenshin that I’m currently working on. I’m about to start wrapping up the Raijuta storyline and get ready for Kyoto. If you want to check it out, I’d love and appreciate that! I can’t wait to get into Kyoto and Jinchuu. Have a great day! Thanks again for the comment.
Lots of comparisons between one format and another are usually bullshit nitpicks but I totally agree with how they shouldn't have let Kenshin know what sword he was using.
Dang, I don’t even remember that! I think it’s time I ought to rewatch this and watch it all the way thru. I stopped after this scene from the video cause I felt I had seen enough at the time.
Also, in my retrospective series where I analyze each chapter. When Sanosuke meets Anji and he’s trying to learn the futai no kowami, he explicitly tells the ghost of Captain Sagara that he’s on this trip to Kyoto to help Kenshin cause he doesn’t want to see him die the way that Captain Sagara did. New Kyoto just ignored all the story beats that made Kyoto special.
My gripes with it: No Saito vs Usui It felt rushed; too many things or fights mashed together when they shouldn’t be happening at the same time Nearly all of kenshin’s fights (especially that shit with Sojiro and Aoishi) Saito’s appearance. He’s an imposing character (with sharp eyes and angular features) yet they took that away by making him appear ‘more human.’ But on the flip slide, the animation and style is gorgeous.
Toby Clain they’re all songs from the Rurouni Kenshin anime I don’t remember the names of each song except for the final one. The last song in this video is called Departure
ItsumoListless The OST I was looking for was the middle part of the video when Kenshin fights Cho in the anime version. It’s called Starless (piano version)
Couldn't have said it better myself! It was pretty to watch but thats about it. The english dub was so terrible i dont know how it made it to the final cut, they cant even pronounce names properly wtf..
You would think, but It’s somehow bloodier than the original and Kenshin kills Shishio in this version (according to other commenters. I haven’t seen it myself)
Some of that slice of life stuff wasn’t too bad. I appreciate Kenshin and Aoshi meeting up to have that tea and it be awkward as hell for the two of them. The engagement episode was cute enough for Kaoru and Kenshin But definitely those filler story arcs weren’t good. I didn’t know it was the same studio tho
The Battles Are Good but not good enough ...Samurai X all the episodes was awesome. As the dude said no special skills and the plot its a little fucked up !!
You are 1000% RIGHT on the Cho fight. Kenshin not knowing whether it was Reverse Blade or not added to the drama. In the OVA, it just looses all that urgency.
its impossible for me to enjoy the new cartoon when I grew up with the anime. and I wish the moovies were based on the anime too, but I dont even like the Kenshin actor so.. Anime or nothing lol
Sérgio Henrique the manga is fantastic!! I think that Yahiko is a much better character in the manga than in the anime. You should read it if you haven’t. There’s also the final arc that was never animated.
well what transpired in the story is really what happened in manga. the old samurai x story was different from the original manga this ova is depicted from the manga.
Rurouni kenshin is the greatest anime series of all time... the manga was perfect. the original animation, music, eng voice acting, storylines, nuances, philosophies, intro and outro songs were all a masterpiece. I love this show!
I love it too!! You should check out my manga retrospective! The first couple episodes were a little rough but I’ve basically gotten my rhythm. I’m up to chapter 51 of the manga now. Just if you want more Kenshin content! :)
I'll check it out! I read the manga at least 5 times and the anime without skipping the starting and ending theme (Didn't even skip the next episode trailer) at least 8 times.
That was exactly the main issue! If you don't understand the characters you will get this pointless OVA totally devoid of what makes RK special! If those were to be the people in charge of animating the Jinchuu Arc, then I thank God they didn't do it!
@@keii0n I really don't know but if that were the case then it's good that this had flopped. Jinchuu is such a great Arc because its mostly character-driven and it has to be treated with delicacy. I'm so excited (and a bit nervous) to see what will be the direction of the Live Action Movies for Jinchuu Arc, I cant wait!
Hopefully these movies are good enough that it lights up a RuroKen renaissance and maybe we’ll get a remake of the anime but with a complete narrative. That would be the best case scenario! I’m planning on rewatching the live action films soon! (Well rewatching part 1 and finally getting to part 2 and 3)
Not only that! No skills, no amakakeru ryū no hirameki, no Kuzu ryu zen, whatsoever. who made this new arc is sucks.
Monferaigne I think this is my new favorite comment.
I am just reciting from memory now, but he does do all of these moves.
He just doesn't scream them out like your typical shonen anime, instead going with show-don't tell.
Or in this case, show- don't scream.
But, I have to rewatch it, to be sure.
and he actually kill shishio XD
Hiko showed it
Not to mention the 10 second rematch fight with Aoshi.
Old samurai x was a goldmine of emotion and hardship of life..the sword that doesn't kill only save lives..
The whole scene is pointless because at the end, in this OVA, Kenshin downright _kills_ Shishio-he slams the bottom area of his sword into his skull and it splits in half. It completely defiles the character’s most important philosophy, everything he stands for and his vow to never kill again to Tomoe.

@@wahidpawana424 In your dreams of course
@@misterhimura036 thanks. I understand that you are having trouble sleeping, you know, having ptsd nightmare of your sister getting killed by hitokiri and all that, so i take that as a compliment.
The original anime will always be the best
Otherwise i
think I woulda talked about it here too. Thanks for watching!
Can you pls tell me where you watch new kyoto arc i can't find it in TH-cam,netflix and Facebook and one Last question is that a episode or a Movie?
I watched it by buying the blue ray on eBay, sorry I’m not much help on it.
The OVA is a couple episodes long I believe. When I made this video I only watched part 1 and didn’t get to the end of it.
@@keii0n It's completely shrug off that kenshin straight up kills shishio lol
It almost feels like a "detail'; like Kenshin hitting Shishio's helmet enough for the pressure to blow his head open is just happenstance and kenshin's vow was never broken
@@vincejalbuena543 you can find it on some pirate animes I'm sure; not worth it however.
The whole thing is only 2 long episodes (~40 minutes); sometimes matched together to make one single movie-length OVA (~1 and a half hour)
Ironically the first one, the one being discussed on this video, being the better one.
Shame. I really like the gorgeous aesthetics of New Kyoto.
Tsunahide Minamoto yeah, I wanted to love it too. At least it’s nice to look at. Haha
So far the remake is doing a great job at handling it

Chris Cannon thanks Chris.
Unfortunately I’m so inconsistent about uploads and creating due to school and stuff but I’m still trying to find a balance that I haven’t found yet.
ItsumoListless No problem bud.
Same here, life outside of TH-cam's more important, but I'm sure you'll find a way to balance both soon, maybe in this Summer.
Chris Cannon I’m hoping!
Anime audience characters watching the fight doing nothing xD
This is really good analysis. Good work!
Great video!!! Well explained!! I wish the directors could see your video!! That they can be enlightened!
kerrin ah, I would be honored if they saw my stuff
cho vs kenshin was easily my favorite scene in samurai x. I can't believe they ruined such a beautiful scene.
I liked Cho in the manga.. In the cartoon he doesnt have the same soul and in the movies... no1 has except Hajime Saito cus he basically needs to play the arrogant bitch but other than that is a shit show of actors..
It was amazing in the live action too
In all honesty, the sword fights in the OVA were brilliant, very fluent action, if only it was longer
Unfortunately, this and the animation were the only good things on these OVA!
Bro I Just Love This Anime Series Btw KYOTO ARC Was Good It Wasn't That Bad It Could Be Better
You nailed it so perfectly.
Also, there's really no understandable reason why they would do an abridged version of the Kyoto arc when the Jinchu arc was sitting there completed in manga form and unanimated.
The force is strong with you. I subbed. You will become popular soon.
Don't forget Makoto Shishio putting his head back together like he's fuckin' Deadpool.
It fails because no one wanted a retread of the Kyoto Arc. When I heard about a new RK anime, I thought we were finally getting the Jinchuu Arc, but noooooo!
Ame Kaze well yeah, not only that. But that they retreaded and mishandle this classic arc.
After crying and being depressed for some moment after watching reflection, time to move onto this and then the live action.
Seikoto30 good luck friend! I was of the same mind. The good thing is that from this, you’re going to the live actions. So it’ll dip and pick back up.
That scene in the manga where Kenshin hesitates to draw the sword but after realizing it was a Sakaboto it was amazing
Thank you for doing this!
emmanuel sarkodie you’re welcome! I’m glad you enjoyed the video. I have a few more Kenshin videos if you’re interested. 😃
Sure! 😊
My favorite moment of the entire series. Think it maybe time to rewatch
It never hurts 😉
I actually love the final scene where Kenshin and Shishio fought on Rengoku battleship instead Hiei Mountain because it still make sense for battered up Kenshin, Sano, Saito and Aoshi to escape along with Anji, Sojiro and Hoji.
He's alive. He's alive. That amazing tone
people sometime missunderstood thing while doing a new versions of things... they think that they need to put their signature on it... that doing like the past is a mistake... an they should aways change things to "feel" more fit on their taste/time... that was the mistake they have done on the arc... shame.
The best fight scene was between Saito and Shishio. Kenshin's fight scenes were less exciting...
Saito best grill
Agreed, an as a fan of Aoshi, underderstood the true meaning of disappointment after their fight.......

Artstyle and animation are gorgeous but there are so many fails like, Kenshin vs Aoshi only lasted 12 seconds LOL

I want to see how batosai was so great and love to see no mercy at all on his opponent..
No odds..

Richard Manzano I mean I get it! But it’s not the point of his story arc.
If you haven’t seen the Trust and Betrayal OVAs I recommend them. It takes place during the war and it’s about the events that lead him down the path of pacifist.
This might be late but you can knoe how he was before by reading the manga, the anime lacks but its delivers the message beautifully too.
It goes against everything Kenshin stands up for, contradicts his philosophy and feels insulting towards the woman he once loved.
Absolutely not.
@@uchihaedgelord5589 TRUEEE
" I love because of that.

oof this hit me. good job.
Francisco Chi Tan thank you Francisco!
The live action did way better. I say it was good, they introduced the high heaven style techniques in a creative way, they fixed Saito's ability to fly in the last 4 movies and that was an improvement
I always thought, what if kenshin thought it was a regular sword, so he flipped the blade, which would THEN actually kill Cho
bbydino I’ve thought about the same thing actually
The spin was also a dodge and re position, any one saw that the strike send brush head flying the wrong way...
meganabaja right! In the original, but not in the OVA. In the OVA, Chou has two swords rather than that bending sword.

I only got as far as this fight goes and others commented saying that the Shishio fight is even worst but I don’t know anything about it.
I mean. I agree with the analysis of the scene, the original was so much better. But damn I wanted more Kenshin even if it was a remake. Now I just found out, the rest is on hold indefinitely because of the charges against the author...
what if kenshin reverse the sword given because he don't want to kill cho? then he will become killer again in accident.
Yoga Yasahardja in the original version he was prepared to become a killer again. He was ready to slay blood to save the life of a child. It just so happened that the blade was a reverse edge. Kenshin was extremely lucky to not have broken his vow in that instant and this version fails to show that.
It doesn't fail tho
I’m happy that you like it! :)
I just don’t think it was for me
Hey dude I was discussing with a friend but the hokkaido manga is a top seller in japanese book releases and with the live action, if they do a new kenshin anime, maybe a hunter x hunter or fruit basket type reboot that follow the manga more closely, or atleast the jinchuu arc, what are the chances if it will get licensed over here in the west and dubbed, i know viz dropped the hokkaido arc, im curious if in a few years they will pick it up again I understand they are trying to not touch it with the current climate and watsuki arrest 2 years ago
I failed on watching this video when I scoffed at a Hunter x Hunter video that I thought needed a RK look. I had no idea RK had an OVA. Liked
Thomas Hale is this worth watching? Because i havent watched this anime yet
Bro btw...
Which music did you used for this video background in last 30 seconds of the video...?
Couldnt he have just given cho the sword and retrieved it later after baby was safe
Ramnarace Motilal could you really trust Cho to not have killed the baby after relenting to his demands?
Jeffrey Morales I never made it that far.

Marcus-paul Maharaj thanks, I think?
I agree with you. Every. Word.
Jansen sigaton thank you!
To me it felt forced the fact that neither Kenshin, nor Seiku guy didn't take a look at the sword and also Kenshin couldn't find a use for it without killing the opponent. So this is why to me this was one of the few good scenes from the OVA where things made sense.
Hey! That’s great! I’m happy that you found a good spin on this scene. It didn’t work for me but I’m happy that it did for you! Seriously! 🙏
The scene looks just like the one from the 2nd movie. Then again, New Kyoto Arc was created to promote them.
The new anime is good with this fight 3:15
Everyone: “Oh my god New Kyoto Arc SUCKS it’s awful it should never have been made it should burn in hell.”
Me: hey at least I get to see Kenshin in new modern animation.

But gosh! Cash-grab. 😣
If they were gonna use time, money, and talent animating anything, they should've FINALLY GIVEN US THE JINCHŪ ARC!!! 😰
Heck, at this point they may as well have just gone "Welp, we've got the baby, and this sword's no good for you Chō, so have a nice day~!" and strolled off into the sunset.
Makes me wonder how that would’ve gone down afterwards haha
Anyway!
The worst part of the OVA, to me, is Sanosuke telling Saito he didn't gone to Kyoto to help Kenshin! I got like “WTF? You're his best friend”!
Hey Fam! Just wanted to let ya'll know that I made a recent video on the family of Sanosuke!
If you're interested, check it out
The OVA fucked up the Shishio fight too in my opinion. On the boat I mean. That shit was whack.
I never made it there! Haha I couldn’t make it passed the Cho fight
i agree... the ova felt lacking terribly compared to the series..
My gripes with it:
No Saito vs Usui
It felt rushed; too many things or fights mashed together when they shouldn’t be happening at the same time
Nearly all of kenshin’s fights (especially that shit with Sojiro and Aoishi)
Saito’s appearance. He’s an imposing character (with sharp eyes and angular features) yet they took that away by making him appear ‘more human.’
But on the flip slide, the animation and style is gorgeous.
What is the OST of this video?
Toby Clain they’re all songs from the Rurouni Kenshin anime
I don’t remember the names of each song except for the final one.
The last song in this video is called Departure
ItsumoListless Thanks
ItsumoListless The OST I was looking for was the middle part of the video when Kenshin fights Cho in the anime version. It’s called Starless (piano version)
I agree with you noting can beat the original
Couldn't have said it better myself! It was pretty to watch but thats about it. The english dub was so terrible i dont know how it made it to the final cut, they cant even pronounce names properly wtf..
Kenshin KILLS Shishio...I still dont understand what in the actual fuck were they thinking.
It was a mess!
where did you watch it?
I purchased the OVA on eBay.
I really hated the final battle it made shishio look really weak and god that headsplit was awful
I heard it’s really bad but I never made it to that part
@@keii0n you should check it out cause I'd like to know your thoughts on it
You guys should be happy Kenshin didn't show up black or lgbt somehow, like all the other shows these days.
No the Aoshi fight.......wtf
magnificent10304 I don’t think I watched passed this point in the OVA.
Wow pale in comparison to the original anime!!! Damn, they must made a family-friendly of Samurai x for some reason.
You would think, but It’s somehow bloodier than the original and Kenshin kills Shishio in this version (according to other commenters. I haven’t seen it myself)
So many version..the original manga series is still the best.
The Live action was better than the remake
Definitely!
@@keii0n dude i just found out they are making a new live action movie for Rurouni Kenshin called
Rurouni Kenshin The Final/The Beginning
@@keii0n th-cam.com/video/gJiK2NqlPDk/w-d-xo.html
Oh that’s awesome!!! I have to check this out. Thanks for sharing with me! :)
Shame.. when the Japanese anime industry themselves do not get nuances and spoil the premise.
Facts bro, it sucked hard, but what hurts the most that this was made by the same studio that ruined the anime with the filler crap.
Some of that slice of life stuff wasn’t too bad. I appreciate Kenshin and Aoshi meeting up to have that tea and it be awkward as hell for the two of them. The engagement episode was cute enough for Kaoru and Kenshin
But definitely those filler story arcs weren’t good. I didn’t know it was the same studio tho
@@keii0n Yes it was made by Deen Studio but the first and second season where done with the help of Gallop Studio
There’s also the final arc that was never animated.
so the ova sucks because of one scene?
Not necessarily, it wasn’t very good to begin with but this is the scene that just did it for me.
No theres other bad scenes too like the final battle and the english dub is awful
well what transpired in the story is really what happened in manga. the old samurai x story was different from the original manga this ova is depicted from the manga.
Ohhh you’re hardcore! That’s awesome! I hope you like it!
That was exactly the main issue! If you don't understand the characters you will get this pointless OVA totally devoid of what makes RK special! If those were to be the people in charge of animating the Jinchuu Arc, then I thank God they didn't do it!
Do you know if there was an intention to have this team animate an OVA version of jinchuu had this OVA been received well?
@@keii0n I really don't know but if that were the case then it's good that this had flopped. Jinchuu is such a great Arc because its mostly character-driven and it has to be treated with delicacy. I'm so excited (and a bit nervous) to see what will be the direction of the Live Action Movies for Jinchuu Arc, I cant wait!
Hopefully these movies are good enough that it lights up a RuroKen renaissance and maybe we’ll get a remake of the anime but with a complete narrative. That would be the best case scenario!
I’m planning on rewatching the live action films soon! (Well rewatching part 1 and finally getting to part 2 and 3)
The final fight was also boring
live action is way better than this
