Everyone is commenting on the Nord Modular, which is awesome, but my attention is on the Atari ST. Such a great computer for electronic music production. I learned computer music at Simon Fraser University in the late 1980s. The ST was at the centre of the studio. Fond memories for sure.
I've been coming back to this several times now. To me, this is as close as a perfect rendition of the original, and evokes the same emotions. Utterly impressive.
thanks to the Algorithm finding this... The "cover" you played is absolutely spot on, this should be used for an official "remastered" release of the song!
One of my absolute favourites. The number of times I've listened to this over the years and you can't really tell the difference between this and the original. The bass is amazing
I have no doubt that I am the heaviest addict in the whole world to the song Fade to Grey. A song that from the moment it came out I listen to it and to other versions every day. I am definitely a compulsive collector of all versions of Fade to Gray ever released. I even think that I probably know it better than his creators. As for your version... without a doubt your stunning version is the closest ever to the original, well done and I'm looking forward to a different version of fade to gray with your own original additions
Fade to Grey is one of my favourite tracks too. Suggesting that my version is the closest you’ve heard to the original is mind blowing!….considering how many compromises I had to make to generate all the sounds simultaneously within the CPU limitations of the Nord Modular. Thank you for commenting, I really appreciate your awesome feedback.
ST is a relatively simple computer, coupled with a relatively simple OS that has many characteristics on today's real-time OSes. Thanks to that and clever programming of Cubase, delays in MIDI communication are kept to a minimum... and this results in beats always being spot-on tight.
I used my Atari for countless hours making music, but the thing with musical timing is it needs to swing and spot on the beat just makes elevator music. I used to divide the bar by 960 ticks and offset lots of notes, sometimes by as little as 5 ticks plus or minus depending on the instrument. When I started using a Windows PC I couldn't believe how bad it was at timing, the sounds just arrived in random lumps, Linux OS's have no such problems but I still miss making music with no other distractions.
An absolutely fantastic rendition of a great song! I really like that you included the piano roll parts after the song. Really helpful for those of us that like to experiment ourselves. Please consider doing this for your future videos.
This is very well made! Congrats. Recreating popsongs (no matter what style) is one of the best things to do to learn all about creating synthssounds, programming, music composing, arrangement, mixing. That is what my teacher told me back in the 80's when I took production lessons and what I did over and over again. And that is how I managed to sign a publishing deal with EMI later on with my own compositions.
this is great! I own both, G1 and G2, and can tell from many years of patch designing - you really did a great job here! Those Nord Modulars are very underrated. I really hope, Clavia will bring a G3 one day. Interestingly enough the G1 had something very interesting to its sound character, that the G2 doesn’t have. Hard to describe in words. I sold my G1 when I bought my G2, just to buy it back a year later…
Made the same experience. Sold my G1 after I got the G2. It has less features and less horespower, but it less polished, somewhat grainy, coarse sound makes it sound more alive.
The Atari is just a sequencer, no sounds are coming out of it. The synth is playing the audio, the Atari is sending MIDI data to it telling it what to play.
This is taking me back to very good times. I once followed a production course in Hilversum, the music capital of the Netherlands, where they had an Atari ST with Cubase just like yours. I would not go back to the days but I do feel very warm watching your setup still rocking.

The 80s music should be in a Museum for current and future Generations the most creative, Atmospheric and Otherwordly musicians in History.
Still one of the all times greats and still puts a shiver down my spine at 74 .

Wow … thank you for your awesome feedback … it’s very much appreciated.
It’s got that same Lo fi feel as the original, the boy done good with this
I agree. I've heard so many versions that don't quite have the feel of the original, but this one does. Amazing work!
Lo máximo esto no pasa de moda!
Best of all, this never goes out of style!
My beloved ATARI ST Series. (Got about 5 ATARI ST / TT in Stock) I Love them :)
thanks to the Algorithm finding this...

Nostalgia! Atari is not dead! Is my first computer with Pro-24 of Steinberg, one collector!!! Thanks for this video... Title of song is very cool!

Thanks … I really appreciate your awesome feedback 👍
Well, Google couldn’t tell the difference either. That’s why it’s marked this as the original and claimed copyright over the audio 😂

Une des meilleures intro que j’ai entendu à l’époque …
Come on let's face it we were all whispering "Fade to Grey" at least once 😆
Great work. Sounds good 👍
I didn't but only because I was drinking something.
@@stickyfox Wait a minute. You didn't because you was drinking something? 🫤
@@judgeberry6071 well I wanted to.. just my mouth was full at the moment.
@@stickyfox Ah ok cool
And even an occasional Devenir en gris!
Ah ça c'est du bon boulot!!! a l'ancienne avec un bon vieux et stable Atari...BRAVO!!!
And props to the ST 👍
You can’t beat the ST’s for timing, there is something about hearing a song sequenced on the ST that is just bliss.

Excellent work! Used to have a Nord Modular and Cubase on the ST, the good old days 👍
Lovely old-school ST there. And great cover!
Absolute classic of the 80’s ! Probably mad with the same electronic tools and this good old Atari

@@otisoblSame here.
Atari ST’s we’re the most rock solid sequencers. So much better than any Opcode system.
Sounds good the 80s even look like 80s with Atari ST :). Best cover for this legendary track i"ve heard so far. great job.
Fantastic work both with the recretion and the video editing. Loving those clear Atari Cubase captures :)
Fantastic, and I love the patch diagrams and explanation of some of the Nord's limitations.
Nice job! Love this vintage setup. Atari st and Amiga for sound is really really something!
That is amazing! Sounds so good. I wish I could give more than one thumbs up.
Thanks … I really appreciate the feedback 👍
Great great job!! Fantastic video!!
This was awesome! I especially loved the breakdown at the end! More of this please!
A wonderful artistic interpretation. Cheers
Loved the Atari for Sequencing had the STFM with KC's Omega software..
Great tune i was singing along with it
Very impressive dude.
It is unbelievable that you get this sound with an Atari.
Very well done.

Wow...Sounds like the "real deal". I always wanted a Nord Modular, never had the money. Now I am addicted to Eurorack.
Remarkable job - thoroughly enjoyable, and quite incredible.
One of my favourite songs. I have the original Nord rack, incredible synth for its time. Well done.
Brilliant work 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thanks for the great feedback 👍
Totally underrated synth. It's a pity Clavia dropped the ball on that series.
Incredible! Well done on absolutely nailing one of my favourite Visage tracks.
