    I grew up with the Genesis version, absolutely loved this game. I remember when I beat it, I paused the game right before the ending and kept it paused for like 6 hours until my dad got home from work so he could see the ending. I was so paranoid it would freeze and lock up. Thankfully we got to watch the father/son reunion together!

    My favourite version of this game is easily the Atari Jaguar version, because its the only console version which let's you SAVE YOUR GAME after each level. Pitfall isn't the type of game I like to spend multiple hours playing in one sitting, so being able to pick up right where I left off makes the Jaguar version the best one for me.
    Also, I get to use the Jaguar controller when I play it, and the size of it makes my hands far more comfortable.

I also played the Windows95 and it was amazing, like the Sega CD version combined with the superior graphics of the Atari jaguar version. In consoles you have to shoose between the Sega Cd for sound or the Atari Jaguar for graphics :(

    I struggled with all the bosses (especially level 4 when you fight 2 of them) because early on I came up with the brilliant idea to hold each and every bomb I find until the final boss. It makes the game an order of magnitude harder, but it pays off; you collect enough throughout the game that you can just stand there and spam them on Warrior Spirit; he stays stunned and can't attack, and it just takes like 30 seconds before he's dead

    Might be a silly question, but why is each port so different from the other? Did it have to do with the limited audio and graphics capabilities of each system? I have a lot of love for this game. I grew up playing the crappy GBA version, but discovered the SNES version later on. Such a classic.

    • @yoteca
      @yoteca 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct, each system has its specifications and the game code has to be adapted to the different hardware. This may result in different graphics, sound and performance. It was a tedious process (still is but the difference is not that noticeable) and it really shows when you put all ports side to side. For example the SNES had lower resolution but better sound and graphics than the Genesis. Some background effects like scrolling and textures are also different and/or missing. So yeah, sometimes one system would get an inferior port.

    • @yoteca
      @yoteca 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @PXLTRON the Genesis does have a unique sound and I agree that a good composer can make all the difference in the world with the hardware. At the end of the day it is a personal preference thing but I don't think SNES games sound the same. actually I'd say that about the Genesis.

    The GBA's chipmunk sound effects and higher speed of play is comical. But I must say they did a great job of making the most of the MD's limited color palette and still creating a lush colorful environment that ran very smoothly. And the SNES also looks fantastic. Given that the rom sizes of the SNES and MD compress to about the same size, and are almost half the compressed size of the jag and 32x they did a great job on optimizing the SNES quite nicely. Such a shame the two best looking versions run at 30 FPS (Jag and 32X, the Jag looking the absolute best to me).
    Therefore from a gameplay and overall sound perspective, the Sega CD version is still the winner. A smooth 60 FPS and decent soundtrack. They could have used the extra power of the system to make it look less dithered though, unfortunately. Still, it plays well. If you can live with 30 FPS and some slowdown on top of that (I can't), the Jag. So pretty.

    • @WhitePointerGaming
      @WhitePointerGaming หลายเดือนก่อน

      Late to the party with this reply, I know, but the bad scrolling on the 32X is a result of the 32X just not being very good at handling scrolling 2D bitmaps like this due to how it worked. In most 32X games like this, the 32X handles the sprites while the Mega Drive handles the scrolling backgrounds because it's better at it, and that's the same case here. However, the 32X also does a lot of the foreground that you see. This creates a mismatch between the Mega Drive backgrounds, which run at 60fps, and the 32X foregrounds, which deviate between 20-30fps. That's why the scrolling looks so bad.

    Video
    My favorite visually is the Atari Jaguar. I didn't care for Windows bright colors, this isn't a Disney game.
    Audio
    My favorite Audio would have been Sega CD but I felt they went to off course from original audio and wanted to show off and in doing so I feel they lost touch.
    The Sega Genesis audio was good I loved how halfway through it picks up.
    This will be an unpopular opinion but after a few times of comparing the Genesis to the 32x I love the slight changes to the 32x so to me it has the best music.
    The only one I have actually played was the snes version and the music just doesn't do it for me.
    I just bought the Jaguar version can't wait to try it.

    This is yet another game I've seen but never played. Its Windows 95 version seems best, followed by its Atari Jaguar and Super NES versions. The least impressive version to me is the Game Boy Advance port; while I don't mind that its background music was left out, the fact that the camera is so zoomed in makes the platforming needlessly difficult.
