- This game is running on a Windows 8.1 Dell XPS 15 laptop.
How to run Pitfall with sound and fix the crash / freeze problem when you enable sound effects and soundtrack:
1 - I have the original CD but I'm getting the "Pitfall must be played using the CD-ROM"
A: If you're using Daemon Tools or other virtual drive program, REMOVE ALL VIRTUAL DEVICES from your computer.
If you are using a virtual machine such as VM Workstation or VM Ware, there is no solution for this, use a phisical DVD/CD drive.
2 - I can't tick the "sound effects" checkbox:
A: Run the game in compatibility mode with Windows 95;
3 - I can't tick the "CD Music" checkbox:
A: This only works if you have the original CD of the game.
4 - Whenever I enable the "sound effects", the game crashes or freezes:
A: Copy the content of the CD to any place (E.g. C:\PITFALL).
Download the file "WAIL32.dll" from here: www.mediafire....
and extract it to the folder ASSETS (E.g. C:\PITFALL\ASSETS) replacing the original one
Other tips:
Bad of missing dispdib.dll - error 2: Just ignore it, it doesn't make any difference.

This is one of my childhood games from the Windows 98 or 95 days... The animation is still as great as I remembered. Just look at how he sways when he climbs vines!

Haven't seen this for ages..... first thing to recognize: Absolutely the same game like Alladin and The Lion King (and probably other titles). As a child, those games were all insanely hard, could barely progress to the second level.

I have the original game disc from 1995. Never been able to get the sound effects to work on any OS after Windows 98. Only the music runs. Any idea how to fix this?

My brothers and I HUDDLED around that PC. I remember the minecar levels being pretty unforgiving.

Sucks that CD music just doesn't work without the original CD. I've lost mine years ago. I guess the only way to play with music is to use the Sega CD version, but the PC version is better.
I have the original CD ROM and when I start the game in compatibility mode with Windows 95 the game crashes? Any help? :(
I played it for SNES when I was young.
For those who own an original CD, I have found that the best way to play with both music and ambience without any issues is to make a Windows Millenium Edition Virtual Machine
very little setup necessary except for windows itself
Wouldn't running it with Win98/WinMe compatibility + admin + 800x600 res + 256 colors work better?
