Then envision a flight of B36’s on a practice run flying overhead. Loud, obnoxious and undeniably Radial! I lived halfway between Columbus and Cleveland, and a squadron of bombers were based out of Wright Patterson out of Dayton. They would fly out over Lake Erie when I was a kid. Awesome!
Growing up around airports and radial engined antique airplanes, can't help but get a little teary eyed. So many of "The Caretakers" of these glorious aircraft are no longer with us, like my father who has gone west. Thank you dad for my gift of wings. I will forever be greatful. You taught me it's not all about the airplanes; It's the people who fly them that make them special. To those that care for The Spartans, Staggerwings, Wacos, Travel Airs and all the others....... What an inspiring captivating video! Thank you for posting this. I'm a couple days post back surgery. Grounded for a few weeks and in some pain. Grumpy. But this made my day. I'm so lucky to know what I love and live in a day where I can go fly. Out of the history of mankind only a few humans get to defy gravity. Thank you for reminding me of how lucky I am.
The sound of a Beaver on floats at full throttle echoing off the sides of the bay simply can't be beat, except perhaps by that same plane starting and idling. :) I've had the pleasure of flights in Beavers and a Stearman. Such amazing planes with such cool engines.
Yeah I agree, I used to think that inline engines sounded best but I've learned to love the sound of a radial startup and run. I've ridden in a T6 and a Stearman, greatest experience ever!
@@johnwinter7534 Like I wrote I prefer my R3350s installed in a Connie. They were also on C-119s, A1 Skyraiders and yes on the 7C and a few other aircraft. But that engine combined with a L-1049G or L-1649A is my personal ideal propliner.

Thank God that the dirty board members that were there in the early 2000's are gone, since they stole and sold off LOTS of radial engines. They offered our collection a ton of parts, but I declined, and went on the warpath against them. They are proper now, and a real show- Just as Cole would have wished.
Well done sir. I was not familiar with that bit of history. My wife took me thaeir for my77th birthday. We had a hell of a good time and rode in the auto parade and in the 1918 ambulance. After the parade one of the volunteers took us through all of the hangers on the field sid of the site. It was awesome.
I think it's a Travelaire 5000. If so, it has quite the pedigree - with design inputs from Clyde Cessna, Lloyd Stearman and Walter Beech. I agree. What a cool and interesting airplane. I especially like the red and white biplane at 5:22. And I'm not sure what it is.
Yes! nothing like the sound of a radial engine; I know in the early 70's our local airport had a air tanker group ran the b-26's converted over to drop fire retardant and later moved over to newer radial aircraft which finally got replaced by bigger faster jet aircrafts; I used to sit at the old house back then an watch all the old aircraft take off EVEN the Mustang's take off and do VERY HIGH POWER runs over the house it was FUN
Radial engines ruined my concentration as a center fielder when I was a kid. Seeing a Waco flying overhead right over the ball I was supposed to catch.
Please do us the POS Harley in reference to the beautiful sound of radial engine as it is disrespectful. They are blight on society and the POS on them.
All types of the motors we have developed have a wonderful song to sing such as the radial. I remember an arial applicator back home that had a biplane powered with a radial, and loved hearing it as it went through it's paces. My Father's model "A" John Deere plowing up old black gumbo soil was another wonderful sound. The old "71" series Detroits, good listening. I have been a motorhead all my life enjoying the sounds and abilities of all kinds of motors. The Harley sound is just one of those very recognizable sounds out there that is so distinctly one of it's own. Just like the radial. They both share a power pulse and that certain rhythm that sets them aside. There is a symmetry there reguardless of your hate for Harley.
@@ronfullerton3162 Motor are actually silent, being as they are electric, whereas engines function on combustion of hydrocarbons, which makes a lovely sound.
"So how many radials do you wanna see?"
Me: *"YES."*
How could you not love the sound of these engines, they are beautiful.
Great video. The sound of a radial is the best sound in aviation, especially when you have 4 of them singing in unison on a B-17, B-24, or B-29.

Nothing more beautiful than a radial engine sound
Can never get enough of that engine sound. Been riding Harleys sense '78 , and it's the same with those engines.
🇺🇸😎
My father, who's a pilot, still refuses to understand why I love radials.

Just gorgeous! Always loved a radial
I have been lucky to have flown quit a few old round motor airplanes and enjoyed every min of it. Great video!
Seeing the polished 1938 Ryan SCW fly by near the end was worth it. I remember flying my Dads in the 1960’s..
You can't beat a good sounding radial, PERIOD!
Very likely the best video EAA has ever put out!
Those sounds!! I could just listen to them forever!!!
2:00 Check out the trimotor!!!!
I watch plane videos most of the day. But this has been my favorite video yet. Beautiful machines!
Glad to see that autogyro.
Love those wacky looking things. And they're still safer than a helicopter!
Beautiful video. Only way to improve it would be to include the mighty R-3350s .... preferably attached to a triple tailed Connie :)
I didn’t know any Connie’s had 3350s
The DC7s had 3350s but had to stop in Winslow AZ for oil going from east to west

As I learned at the Oshkosh AirVenture many decades ago: "It ain't got that sound if it ain't round!!!"

If you get a chance, visit The Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome in Red Hook, NY. The engine sounds are fantastic.

I searched the tail number and turns out it's a Travel Air Model 10-D

What is the green plane in 2:35 ?
The time when aviation was much more artistic... designing and flying...
Radial engines ruined my concentration as a center fielder when I was a kid. Seeing a Waco flying overhead right over the ball I was supposed to catch.
What steam is/was to trains, round pounders are to planes
Round me out!
R-2800's ???

It's a Pitcairn PA-18. At the time a gentleman named Jack Tiffany owned it. It's not part of Kermit Weeks Fantasy of Flight Collection.
