Growing Garlic From TRUE Seed

แชร์

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 26 ก.ค. 2014
  • I only know this to be true for HARDNECK varieties of garic.
    The most common ways of propogating garlic is by planting individual cloves of garlic (broken off of a head of garlic) OR by letting the umbrels (what you might call the bloom of the garlic) at the end of the scape develop. Bulbils will develop at the end of the scape and these can be planted after a period of dormancy.
    However, both of these methods are asexual reproduction of the garlic. This is good for maintaining the same variety/cultivar of garlic. This can also be bad since pest, viruses, etc can develop after you have grown the same variety for several generations.
    You can get your garlic into sexual reproduction though! :) Carefully remove the bulbils from the umbrel and let the blooms develop. The blooms will develop small seed similar in size to onion seed (both of the allium family).
    Plant the seeds and you have your own variety of garlic!

    I was given some bulbils a few years ago and planted them that fall , in spring I had 50 garlic plants. Three years later I have over a hundred in different stages of growth , first year bulbils , second year rounds and full heads , I haven't bought garlic in years. I always let one or two scapes mature to get bulbils to plant and give away , the rest of the scapes I make garlic butter with.

    I actually got garlic seeds when I forgot about the Garlic and let it run its course. Came back and saw the flower on top.. let it go again and came back and it was all dried up with the seeds ready for me to harvest. The scape on it was nice and strong. I cant believe the squirrels and wind didnt break it which is what usually happens to me when i grow garlic.

    True seed method takes much too long...about 3 years to get cloves. The plants never gets developed enough in one season to make bulbs. If you’re not in a rush, I say let them fall and over-winter on their own. Be prepared for a crazy number of plants though as each flower can have over 100 seeds!

    first, I LOVE how concise and simple you made this information!! Thank you!! Wondering if you can help in the same way bc I need toddler explanations lol.
    I had a friend pass away 6wks ago that had a wonderful garden. We’ve just now been allowed to go work in her garden to see what’s salvageable etc. I pulled some of her garlic today to see and noticed they had flowered, bulbs were very small, and stems were pretty hard at bottom but green up top. When I started to check out the blooms, they were 100% seed. Naturally, I kept those but now what do I do with the tiny bulbs of garlic? Idk if they were that small bc it’s been neglected for so long or if they just were indeed that small.
    I wish I could add a picture for you to see what I mean lol. Regardless, any help you can give would be amazing!!!
    I know nothing about garlic plants. 😮 What would be best to do? Transplant them back into my yard? Consider it a loss? Help! Lol I consume too much garlic so it’d be wonderful to be able to keep this alive and growing thru the season!! I’m in middle of watching tons of YT videos to learn and yours has been the best by far!! Oh btw, I am in on western tip of IL so same zone as you, I’d imagine. (Literally the most western part you can go, aka nipp!e of IL 😂

    • @nedcooke
      @nedcooke  หลายเดือนก่อน

      The small heads of garlic are likely from one of two reasons, or both. The first is if the bulbs of garlic were planted too close to each other. Garlic should be planted with about 8 inch spacing. About the width if you spread your thumb and pinky finger apart. The second likely reason was that the scape and bloom were not removed. When they are not removed the plant has to put energy into the scape as well as the bulb which can reduce the size of the bulb.
      What you currently have are small bulbs that you can cure (dry out- put them in the basement or hang them in your garage) and then use. Even if smaller than normal you have perfectly good garlic. The bloom at the top of the scape is called an umbel. It is comprised of both bulbils and flowers that produce seed. What you are describing as seed are actually bulbils. These are essentially small cloves of garlic. Bulbil size can vary but they are likely a little smaller than a green pea. Bulbils can be separated from umbel and they can also be cured.
      You can eat most of the garlic (bulbils are too small) over the next couple of months. In Northern IL garlic is best if planted around the end of October. I plant mine every year right around Halloween.
      The bigger the clove you plant the more energy the plant has to develop into a large head of garlic the next year. If you want to grow a bunch of garlic plants you can plant the bulbils 4-6 inches apart. They first year they will develop into small heads of garlic. Then you would have a much larger supply of garlic bulbs the following year. Most years I cut off all of the scapes as they start to develop. They are great recipes out there for grilling them or making them into garlic scape pesto, etc.
      Bulbils let you increase your number of garlic plants much faster since there are many more bulbils than garlic cloves. Garlic cloves, if you plants the largest cloves you harvested will give you the biggest heads of garlic the following year.

      Hi Ozzy, it doesn't really how much stock you leave on. I usually cut the scape off a couple of inches above the last leaf of the plant. I put the scapes in a vase to keep them upright. You do not need to put any growth hormone in the water, plain water is just fine. Full to partial sun is good.

      I read that article - my biggest question is once you have sprouted your seeds, how do you care for them to grow into eventual bulbs?

    • @nedcooke
      @nedcooke  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tahursh637 Let them grow until they start to fall over and turn brown this year. Harvest, dust off most of the dirt. Put them in cool dry place (basement is a good idea). Then plant again around a week or two before the fall frosts (plant with more spacing- 4 inches or so). You'll have small bulbs that will develop next year. Do the same thing as last year, then plant again the following fall with more space (6 inches). Next year you will have full sized heads of garlic!

      @@tahursh637 Not necessarily. 3 years to "full" grown heads of garlic but you will get nice sized heads of garlic next year. Especially from the seeds that grow well this year. The larger the bulb you pull out of the ground this summer will lead to a larger head of garlic next year.

    Mine have seed pods a lot of seed pods, chesnok red seems to be a very fertile garlic cultivar.
    Once you remove every bulbil the flowers really start to go crazy.
    A bunch of little green bees and some wasps were absolutely loving the flowers and they pollinated them for me.
    Now I gotta wait for the pods to dry and once the seeds are available I need to plant them come this winter or in the late fall. I’m happy if I can get at least like 10 plants.
    Apparently it’s gets much easier the more you do it every generation gets more sexual reproduction focused and makes less bulbils more seeds and better quality seeds that germinate better with better vigor.
    I live somewhere hot with no freezes so getting them adapted to my zone is very important, even though they didn’t struggle so much. The plants went through brutal 100+ heat and some dry spells when I forgot to water so hopefully the offspring become tough little bastards lol.

I have two varieties of hardneck garlic growing and i am going to try to get both the germinate by removing the bubils from the scapes to produce seed.

    • @nedcooke
      @nedcooke  9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      ***** Hey John, no I took the dried flowers and put them in a bowl to let them continue drying out. They stayed in my unheated garage over the winter and then I separated the seeds in the spring. Take a look at the article below though. He recommends soaking them in a bleach solution and then putting them in the freezer for a couple of weeks. I did not do this- although I did leave them in the garage which would be the same as the freezer. To date no seeds have germinated. I have heard of people having seeds germinate 60-90 days after planting so there is still some hope but the odds are not looking good for my first attempt. :) I think I am going to leave 3 scapes on this year and see if I notice a size difference in the seed. Larger size roughly translating to more viable seed.

    • @jacobspranger1267
      @jacobspranger1267 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You will want to leave the scape attached to the plant to get them to bloom. You can harvest the garlic bulb afterwards. It will be smaller then had you cut the scape off shortly after developing. By leaving the scape attached to the plant, you will lose up to 30% garlic bulb size. Not sure if he mentioned but hardneck garlic produce the scapes. Scapes are excellent in soups, salads, egg salad, potato salad, scape pesto, hot dish. You name it. Pick them once they have curled. They become woody as they age on the plant. When picked early you can eat the entire scape.

    If I cut those scapes off before they get too large will the garlic heads continue or does that kill the plant

    • @nedcooke
      @nedcooke  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Robert, cutting off the scapes will make the garlic head grow bigger actually. It's not a huge change, but if the plant doesn't have to put energy into the scape it can put more energy into producing bigger bulbs. Also, young, tender garlic scapes are delicious!

    How many true seeds from one garlic plant

    • @nedcooke
      @nedcooke  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you get seeds you will get 100-200 seeds you can grow. It will take a at least 2 years for a seed to grow into a head of garlic.

      Yes, but they are so small it isn't worth it. I suppose you could put a bunch in a garlic press.

    those are bulbil, not true seeds. they wont be genetically different. if you take off the bulbils while young that will let the flowers have enough room to try to make true seeds but it will take a while and you wont get very many. they will look more like onion seeds :)

    These aren't seeds. They are vegetative clonal buds. True seeds are pollinated and have a hard seed coat. These are called BULBILS and are not seeds.
