PPV had more information available compared to FTA. A reason why Walker and Brundle (and many FTA broadcasters) were unsure or ambiguous as to what the penalty was for.

    A protest was lodged by McLaren-Mercedes who felt Ferrari cheated by not having Schumacher serve the penalty, but this was rejected by the FIA.[3] At the hearing for the protest the International Court of Appeal confirmed that the stewards have made several mistakes in issuing a 10-second time penalty for an incident that happened outside of the last 12 laps of a race while exceeding the allowed time limit for the notification of a penalty having been issued.[3] As a result of their mistakes, the three stewards involved handed in their licenses at an extraordinary meeting of the FIA World Council.

    Even if there was a loophole or something like that, Schumacher finished the race before he served the penalty. Anything that happens after crossing the finish line is irrelevant. He can get out of the car and start dancing moonwalk, but it won’t be considered as a racing offence, since the race is officially over. It was over when he was serving the penalty, so it is pretty bizzare that they let him keep the victory

    • @ignls8809
      @ignls8809 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The problem is that the race director made a mistake because a penalty should be issued in 25 minutes from the action but it was given after 35 minutes, so ferrari had everything to accuse the FIA, and to avoid ferrari suing them, they let Schumacher keep the win

    • @Fabio-ns4ql
      @Fabio-ns4ql ปีที่แล้ว +7

      You need to read the rules as they were written. The rules said that upon being served with a penalty you must serve that penalty by driving into the pits within 3 laps. MS drove into the pits within 3 laps to serve his penalty. The race was not over when he drove into the pits to serve the penalty. The race was however over as the Ferrari box was posited after the finish line. Brilliant and correct interpretation of the rules.

      The "unfair" part was actually how indecisive the stewards had been that day, as illustrated by this excerpt:
      _Following the race a dispute arose surrounding the circumstances of Michael Schumacher being issued with and serving his penalty. His team argued that the penalty should have been issued within 25 minutes of the incident but instead they were informed after 31 minutes. They also argued that the hand-written notification was unclear as to which penalty was actually being issued: a stop-and-go, or a 10-second addition to Schumacher's race time, though the FIA's International Court of Appeal later clarified that it was the latter. The stewards then decided to nevertheless apply the 10-second addition, post-race. However, the added time penalty can only be used to punish an infraction in the last 12 laps of a Grand Prix, and so did not apply here. The stewards eventually rescinded the penalty altogether._
      All in all, an indecisiveness that would've fucked Ferrari's race so they decided to take this action to _repay the favor_

      I am new to f1. But Schumacher was given a stop and go penalty (10 seconds I think) for passing someone during a yellow flag. He pitted as the penalty required. I guess because Ferrari had their pit box ahead of the finish line, he technically passed it. Meaning once he served his penalty, his race officially ended.
      The objection to this would be first technically the penalty was served after ending but because second didn't pass him until the penalty was served, it was dismissed. Under the idea that if served before passing the results would be the same. But the hidden advantage of that move was, Schumacher never had to complete a slow exit of the pit, as he would of needed if served in a previous lap.
      What isnt shown here it at a later hearing it was decided the Marshall's apparently waited too long to call the penalty, and while accepted the win was unfair, the fact the marshalls were wrong, made stripping the win from Schumacher unfair. Those Marshall's were fired or quit.

      They, wanted to do that, but they couldn't. Rules back then stated that this would only be possible if the penalised incident happend within the last 20% of the race distance, in case of Silverstone back then, within the last 12 laps, which wasn't the case here.
      Also, the penalty was later rewoked anyway.

      Michael won, because he finished the race in the first position. In other words, he crossed the finish line in the lead. This means, that the driver who crosses the finish line first, wins the race.
      Michael was first, when he turned into the pits. He was first, when he was in the pits, driving to his team. He was first, when he stopped for more than 10 seconds. He was first, when he drove off again. He was first, when he came out of the pits.

    Are we still unsure why Michael was given a stop/go penalty? Either way it was probably the most stupid of times to give such a penalty. I guess this is why we have 5 to 10 second penalties to drivers when they finish a race so there's no confusion.

    • @shi01
      @shi01 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The penalty was a farce and was actually revoked later.
      Officially the penalty was given because Schumacher supposedly overtook Alexander Wurz in the Benetton under safety car. But with that, the clown show started.
      First of all, the Stewards took to long to hand out the penalty. Rules back then said the team of the driver who gets the penalty must be informed about it within 25 minutes after the incident. The stewards already f... this up by handing out the penalty 31 minutes later.
      Further the info for the team was on a handwriten note, which is against protocol, and it didn't describe the kind of penalty to serve. So was it a Stop/Go or a 10 second penalty? Nobody knew. Ferrari took Schumacher in and let him stand for 10 seconds just to be safe. The stewards claimed after the race it was the later and wanted to add the 10 seconds to Schumachers race time. But the rules stated, that this would only be possible if the incident would have happend in the last 20% of a GP so in the case of Silverstone back then in the last 12 laps. So after all they decided to revoke the penalty.
      But for the Steward the whole thing had an aftermath. After the GP the FIA higher ups had a look at the thing and the result was that all 3 stewards of that day had to hand in their lincence. So basically they got fired.

    • @ChadLouisNewton
      @ChadLouisNewton ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Because the penalty itself wasn't valid as it took too long to be issued and was too short notice for it to be served by Michael/Ferrari. The Stewards ended up losing their licences over this.

    Anyone new to F1, make sure you go back and watch this season in it's entirety. Dearly miss Murrays commentary, and god help f1 once Martin and Ted have gone.
    Seriously not enjoying the new outside influences since Bernie flogging the show and all in the name of saving the planet and apparent cost cutting (aka helping more teams join), of which over the last 15 years has turned out quite the opposite. We need lighter cars, 100% racing for 60-90mins, drivers should be struggling to exit these machines . Limited aero parts and more mechanical grip and For me I'd personally prefer to see a foot clutch and manual box (all physical), only allow team radio for qualifying and a few laps either side of pit stops, revisit safe refuelling to bring back the different weight variables and cut the DRS fake overtake cr p, endless runoff areas, red flags, virtual safety cars and countless penalties and I'm not even going to mention the shift as with everything to a 75% black woman lineup for the new experts aren't going to enlight and enthuse new fans, we need guys like Martin with fundamental knowledge of racing at the highest level and people who have passion for the sport. Having too many races devalues the others. POINTS positions top 6 and v10/12, sod the fuel this is F1, we want proper engines with authentic bells and whistles, now we have a very dull, underwhelming noise, sounds horrible.
