Thanks for the honest debrief Harry, must have been a tough video to put together. Lots of positives to take from the day, it takes even the best athletes years to nail Ironman. I was starting to fancy my chances at catching you 🤣🤟
If it's any consolation your Tenby recce - tips video helped me during the swim especially the one to head towards the life boat station and the gap in the houses it really helped me to keep calm during all the confusion, thank you👍 hope you feel better soon. Definitely wetsuit off next time I took mine off down to my waist and I had to pull it back up a few times during the run to T1
BIG Respect Harry! A cracking swim and bike leg, saw you on the run and it’s a tough call to DNF. You will come back next year stronger and harder than ever! 🙏🏼 Another note: although you may have not finished, your videos before the race helped many cross the line so you haven’t let people down 👏🏼
Don't sweat it man, shit happens, you've got all your limbs intact and the grit to come back stronger, just got to see it as a learning experience as with every race, and you can't help extenuating circumstances. Anyway man best luck for the next one.
I DNF’d too. My rear bike gear cable broke in Pembroke. I made it as far as Narberth with only my two front gears but was never going to make it up those hills with only the front gears so I had to quit while I was ahead. Gutted. Will be back next year.
What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. You didn’t lose, you learned. There’s a grieving process to something like this. Be logical, remove the emotion and come back harder and stronger. You got this bud.
This was a hard video for me to watch as I was also a DNF last week in Tenby. My problem was just speed on the bike, I didn't make the cutoff, but it's weird and encouraging to hear you having a lot of the same emotions and thoughts that I've been having over the last week. Thanks for the video and for the honesty.
With Tenby it helps if you know the course, there's plenty of hills which will bring hour average down. You need to know where the flattest sections are so you can work hard
That’s a tough old course Liam don’t be too hard on yourself - it’s easily the hardest of the four IM races I’ve done. When I did IM Wales me and my buddy went down for a recce about 3 months before the event and went round with some local cyclists we got chatting to on a FB group and that helped enormously having some knowledge of the course. Also a few I got talking to had DNF’d previously and they all finished 2nd time round so I do hope you’ll have another crack at it.
Dont chew yourself up Harry. You can train all you like but if your body falls apart there is absolutely nothing you can do. You have done the best thing by learning from want went wrong and kicking on. Onwards and Upwards.
Harry you are the man. dont ever let yourself feel down. You are a big inspiration. The next one will be HUGE! Stay in shape and get your first full completed and won!
Harry, you've let no one down. Your loved ones support is unconditional. I hope it is some comfort to know that there are many (myself included) commenting here who have experienced the emotional turmoil that comes with a DNF, so sorry mate, you're not unique in that regard! You just happened to experience it much nearer the pointy end of the action than most of us can dream of! I'm glad you had people with you to help you make the right call to stop when you did. I think there is too much of a 'finish at all costs' culture around Ironman which can lead to bad outcomes. I hope you sort the stomach issue soon and all the best for the future.
Don't be annoyed with yourself - you have learnt so much from your experience and will come back so much stronger. Look forward to presenting you with your medal on the finish line in 2023 - you got this, I don't know you but am very proud of your honesty, you sound truly sincere.......See you next year.
You never fail, you only ever succeed or learn! I had to DNF my first Staffs 70.3 after 2.5miles of the run. I exited the swim and lost the vision in my left eye (corneal abrasion), rode the whole bike course with 1 eye. By the time I hit the run, I just couldn’t do anymore. Took me 3 days to get my sight back, and about 2-3 weeks for it to not be blurry anymore. The demands you place on yourself is the hardest critic that you will ever have; it took me a while to accept the DNF and will just learn, and do it next time. To quote Sun Tzu “No plan withstands contact with the enemy.” Basically, when biology is involved, things can and do go wrong…it’s a fact of life. Don’t dwell on it, learn and let it be in your rear view mirror. Keep going, you are doing awesome.
Many thanks for this episode! I think this honest debrief helped experienced and unexperienced athletes. Believe or not your previous post helped me finished my first IM last week end. Keep pushing! And many thanks again
Great honest debrief Harry. I feel your pain having done almost exactly the same - finished the swim, the bike, got 25km into the marathon and the wheels fell off and had to withdraw. I was totally gutted. Like you though it was my first Ironman and I took a lot of positives from it and the experience of Tenby/Saundersfoot etc was surreal! Only thing to do now is sign-up again when that priority entry comes out today! Good luck mate.
Harry, I've been watching your videos for months now and you are inspirational. From training tips, fueling, race prep, gear and experiences, it inspires us age groupers to go further, try different things that we may never would have. And as an added bonus we get to see someone training & working towards a win and the dedication it requires, the ups and the downs. This video is no exception, and even with a DNF, you still continue to inspire. This is a mere stepping stone towards the top and you'll look back at this and know it helped make you the athlete you will become. You've let no one down, don't sweat it and keep doing what you're doing. 🏊♂️🚴♂️🏃♂️🙏
I feel your pain after having a similar response in 2020. It really sucks that you had the issues you did but I really appreciate that you put this out there, still. I hope you're feeling better soon and ready to crack that Ironman!
Yeah over it now , live and learn dont you ,entered outlaw x for next week, yeah keep up the good work though Harry ,on and off the course 👍 keeps us age groupers going 😎
Such a great honest video. I always enjoy them. Races often don’t go to plan and you then learn so much from them. (I’ve just travelled to Italy from London for a full distance IM and it’s been cancelled due to the weather! 😳)
I feel with you. Had to DNF my second Ironman this summer due to a blood poisoning. Still pissed off 2 months later. But trying to work my butt off for next year. You will get there to. Just keep up the good work, love your videos!!🔥
Hey Harry no shame you smashed the first 2 disciplines just the run to conquer next time 💪 remember wales is considered top 3 hardest in the world you've done well to get this far next year is your year 🤙
thanks Harry I was worried when I sore the DNF, I know this must really suck but by sharing this you have helped lots of people process their own performances which might not have gone to plan. Thank you so much
Good on you Harry for posting this and giving it everything on the day. No shame in DNF even at your level but I know it will feel sh*t all the same. Stay positive and get back on the horse asap you got this!!
That's what i found most frustrating about my first full at Nottingham this year, you look back at simple mistakes or things you could correct but you cant really just enter another one in a few weeks to sort them out (what with recovery and then taper again etc) whereas the shorter distance you can jump back in to make up for it quite quickly. Anyway, awesome swim and lots of lessons learned 👍
Thanks for the story and honest. This will come in handy for many of us when we are unlucky and hit a bad day! Good idea with the test, many of us have intolerancen and best of luck with the recovery, training and not least your next race!
Really unlucky Harry, but a great video and an amazingly honest take on it. We’re at different levels here - I’m 50, but I had a very similar experience at IM Tallinn this year (my 4th IM). I had a decent swim and bike, but had severe stomach cramps on the run just after the end of lap 1 and I thought it was game over. I managed to walk for a while, but as soon as I ate anything or tried to run fast I was back in the portaloos! I ended up walking most of it in the end - but in my case luckily the weather was very pleasant by that point (after raining for 3 hours on the bike!) so it became a stroll round in the early evening sun. I had had some knee issues during training so I had practised power walking 10 miles so that came in really handy lol! The blisters were bad tho I think worse than running for some reason. Anyway it won’t put me off - and my training was great, so I can’t wait for the next one tbh I’m thinking of Kalmar or Italy. Keep up the hard work you’ll be back stronger than ever next time out - all that training and valuable experience gained won’t go to waste you’ll smash the next one.
Great video. Tough luck with the race itself. However, if it's a bug there's little you can do to control it. I ran the Wales Marathon at the LCW in Tenby in 2019 - that's a tough course - different to the IronMan, but it's a great course and as for the crowds they were so inspiring and motivating.
As an amateur, very much back of the pack runner, I'd hate a DNF. Can't imagine the pressure when it's at your level. To lay it all out like this is powerful - fair play to you. Looking forward to seeing you bouncing back.
You will bounce back stronger. In your "Ironman training gone wrong" video at minute 2:52 you had to stop your run due to GI issues. Perhaps the problem could have started from there, you could restrospectively diagnose the possible causes of the issue. You will figure it out, that is what champs are made of.
Its all part of the journey - full iron vs half is a whole different ball game, chalk it down to experience, I suspect you will back with a vengeance - keep it going
Fair play Harry, it was a really tough day. I got to t1 and there had to be at least 30 people wrapped in blankets. The temp dropped really rapidly when it started to rain. I got a huge blister at mile 19 and it was super disappointing as my main goal was just to be able to run the marathon. Almost got it. The fitness was there but my wet feet got the better of me. And another thing, I'd recommend the week or two before, reduce your gluten intake and see how it goes. It works for me as I have bowel disease and I'm pretty much an expert in GI issues haha. All the best for your next race
Chin up mate take it as a lesson for the next one you have inspired me over the year to get back in to it doing a sprint this Sunday and Staffordshire 70.3 next year😂
Gutted for you. I had the shits last week and had to spend a day in bed. Last place I'd have wanted to be would be doing an Ironman. You live to fight another day. Keep your chin up champ! On to the next one!
Putting this in the context of the season, you continue to progress and there will be other opportunities to show that. This race didn't go the way that you have wanted, but the training plan got you there in good shape and the reason for the illness can be looked at for next time. Accept it, refocus and go again.
You should treat this like a personal victory, even starting being in that condition is impressive. Your DNF is a result of your mental strength to even give it a go, you really shouldn't beat yourself up for it
So tough having to dnf. I had to an IM Vichy on the run could barely eat on the bike and the heat was a big factor. Was my first full, managed to complete outlaw last year. It was so tough pulling out mentally took me a while to overcome that. Must be really hard as a pro also whe;your so out there in the media. You will come back stronger at your next one.
As we would say in Australia your a top bloke mate. Good honest video and those that follow you won't think you let them down...far from it. So don't feel you let anyone down. Gave what you had on the day and that's racing....
Loved watching you and Joe this year and was gutted for you when I saw yours time slipping on the tracker early in the run. Recover and come back stronger. You absolutely smashed the swim and had a solid bike leg despite the issues, so lots of positives to take away!! Hope to be racing at a UK event "against" you next year.
Great effort dude. I think a DNF as a pro is a different beast to those as an amateur. A pro might lose a payday but it also makes sense to call it a day to keep the body fit and firing rather than cost yourself in the future. These races take a lot of recovery without a touch of illness. Don't beat yourself up about it, every race has its lessons to teach us.
Really cool and honest report! Cheer up that will be fine! You can not control everything! But do not make too much pressure because of the top five! Top twenty is also still ok! :-) You automatically get nervous before the race and that also has certain effects on the stomach!
Know how you feel bud, my first ever ironman attempt I came down with a bug 2 days before. I did the swim but when I got out was pretty obvious there was no way I was in a fit state to continue. As others have said, shit happens, don't worry about it.
Unlucky Harry, my first ironman was this summer and for the last 3 hours I had bad stomach pains that had me walking. So can't imagine trying to deal with that for the whole day, not to mention while also maintaining top 5 level performance! 🤣 Definitely lots of positives for you to take from the day
Funny about you swimming into age groupers. 😆 I'm sorry that you had issues even before the race. I'm sure you'll perform well when you do the next race. Recover well both physically and mentally!
Really good insight and thanks for sharing. It happens to the best, look at Ali in PTO Canada. Look forward to seeing where you race next and no doubt you will smash it. Stay motivated 💪
Unrelated to your DNF...forget about the full distance for now Harry, you've only just begun your pro career, stick with the middle distance races. Look at the PTO, 100k races are going to be where the money is and as a pro that's where you want to be. Your swim will be to your advantage here and should suit you way better than the full distance for now. You'll get more races in every year, get more experience, hopefully more podiums and thus more exposure.
I did Wales many years ago. It's was just brutal... I missed the start as they did not lead us down in time. That was not good. The running from the beach to T1 was loooong :)
@@Harry-Palmer I rememebr the swim beeing a battle for survival. Could not see where I was going as the waves where so big - lots of other AG's did not complete the swim. My front shifter on the bike stopped working also. That was no fun with thouse hills. It's a very crazy race. From the start to the end. One of the hardest Iv'e ever done. And on the day it was the warmest day in Wales ever. 20 degrees all the way into the night. It was suppose to rain and be cold. Nope. Not that day :)
Good report. Tough shift. You have a bright future. It will all click and the results will follow. I rolled my wetsuit down to my waist and I managed 5th in category. Missed Kona byn2 places. I also had stomach issues on the bike and did not fulfil my potential on the day. Dissapointed too... Tenby is the best been there 7 times Grrrr...
Was following you on the tracker. I call this just bad luck. I DNFed the first time but just got it done this weekend. If you want any tips on how to finish in 15 hours I'm your man.
I had a DNF at Ironman Wales 2018, missed cut off on bike due to mechanical. Came back in 2019 and completed it. Obviously I'm no pro but I know what a DNF feels like
I was shouting for you as you ran up the hill. I thought something didn’t look right in your face and I don’t even know you apart from these vids! Better luck next time dude 💪 .. great explanation of what is not a good idea 😊
Recovery, hydration and nutrition is the flip side of triathlon (indeed any endurance sport). Time to get yourself tested for any allergies. For future races you may want to take your own food. FWIW I would never trust any food the night before a race unless I prepare it. Check out Ironman Tallinn, I’ll cheer you on 😎 Stay motivated you have years of racing in front of you 😉🙌
It was a tough day - Swim was horrible and the run was basically 3 miles climbing per lap Everybody has an off day guess this was your turn - learn from it and move one - when is your next race ?
@@ironmantooltime might sound weird to some but I've always had pizza the night before a race and never had any issues. I'd say most top athletes do have pizza the night before
Real shame, but it’s something not controllable and will happen to everyone at some point. Looking at the actual results it’s mad to think the ‘in the mix’ top 5 you were faster on the swim and only 10-15 mins behind on the bike despite having the stomach issues. Hopefully you do another one!
Just hang in there mate, we all get ups and downs. Just wondering why you took on one of the toughest races for your first. Are their races more suitable do you think.
Mate, obviously two years later and I know you've done better, however, how amazing that you, a professional, would WALK the marathon. We back markers do that, always. I want to tame the dragon, however my bike is shite, so I don't as I am a pussy, one day I will because I have done the distance, just not the elevation. Thanks matey
Get those intolerance tests. I’m sure you will get heaps of anecdotal advice, but trying the scientific route is a good start. Heck, it could have just been a sneaky little e.coli or thousand in that meal. Such rough luck, having been so careful. As others have said though - the great swim and bike under grotty circumstances should be encouraging! Stay strong 👍👍
Thanks for the honest debrief Harry, must have been a tough video to put together. Lots of positives to take from the day, it takes even the best athletes years to nail Ironman. I was starting to fancy my chances at catching you 🤣🤟
Thanks mate. Great to see you there! I did make sure I pulled out before you passed me- I’d never live that down 😂😂😂
If it's any consolation your Tenby recce - tips video helped me during the swim especially the one to head towards the life boat station and the gap in the houses it really helped me to keep calm during all the confusion, thank you👍 hope you feel better soon.
Definitely wetsuit off next time I took mine off down to my waist and I had to pull it back up a few times during the run to T1

You’ll get it next year. Happens to the best of us

Putting this in the context of the season, you continue to progress and there will be other opportunities to show that. This race didn't go the way that you have wanted, but the training plan got you there in good shape and the reason for the illness can be looked at for next time. Accept it, refocus and go again.
Thanks for this, spot on!
You should treat this like a personal victory, even starting being in that condition is impressive. Your DNF is a result of your mental strength to even give it a go, you really shouldn't beat yourself up for it
Thansk so much for this comment
Hang in there. Considering everything you still smashed the swim and the bike was pretty good. You have not let anyone down!
Thanks Andrew!
Respect Harry must hurt right now. The low lows make the highs high. Take from it what U can.
Thanks Jim
No doubt you'll nail the next one. Happens to the best of them. Proud of you pal
Thanks so much
So tough having to dnf.
Thanks so much Stuart!
Gutted
For you Harry , but remember what doest kill you makes you stronger 💪, head down and bounce back stronger
Absolutely mate, really appreciate this
Great effort dude.
Tenby is tough. I'm taking on the long course weekend format in June. Gonna be tough.
Well done buddy.
Really cool and honest report! Cheer up that will be fine! You can not control everything!
But do not make too much pressure because of the top five! Top twenty is also still ok! :-)
You automatically get nervous before the race and that also has certain effects on the stomach!
Thanks for the debrief. Maybe all that air in your guts helped with buoyancy during the swim! Second out of the swim is damn solid!
hahahah that could be true haha!
Know how you feel bud, my first ever ironman attempt I came down with a bug 2 days before. I did the swim but when I got out was pretty obvious there was no way I was in a fit state to continue. As others have said, shit happens, don't worry about it.
Thanks Dean appreciate that!
Great honesty and I feel gutted for you! Doing as well as you did in your first pro full IM race is incredible 👍👍
Thanks bud!
I'm sorry that you had issues even before the race. I'm sure you'll perform well when you do the next race. Recover well both physically and mentally!
Really good insight and thanks for sharing. It happens to the best, look at Ali in PTO Canada. Look forward to seeing where you race next and no doubt you will smash it. Stay motivated 💪
Thanks so much David!
Thanks for this comment Ken
Gluten. Took me 20 years to work out.
Get your arse over to the 70.3 in Majorca with Brett 👍 finish strong there bud
could already have an entry haha
@@Harry-Palmer a good race to finish strong at and the field might not be too competitive with Kona and the 70.3 champs either side 🤷🏻♂️
I did Wales many years ago. It's was just brutal... I missed the start as they did not lead us down in time. That was not good. The running from the beach to T1 was loooong :)
haha yeah it's a crazy race isn't it!
Respect Harry, it takes balls to go for a full ironman. Go again Harry, go again 😉
Tenby is the best been there 7 times Grrrr...
great race brekdown always next time
next race as your first full iron distance is tough
The swim and bike showed you have potential at the full distance
Thanks Troy, next time
Was following you on the tracker. I call this just bad luck. I DNFed the first time but just got it done this weekend. If you want any tips on how to finish in 15 hours I'm your man.
Jeez was looking for your result online sorry to hear that mate
Paul🏴
I had a DNF at Ironman Wales 2018, missed cut off on bike due to mechanical. Came back in 2019 and completed it. Obviously I'm no pro but I know what a DNF feels like
See you at Ironman Wales next year to put things right
I was shouting for you as you ran up the hill. I thought something didn’t look right in your face and I don’t even know you apart from these vids!
Better luck next time dude 💪 .. great explanation of what is not a good idea 😊
You have proven your ability already,6th off the bike. Nuff said!
Thanks pal
with all them symptoms, for me a third of a tea spoon of baking soda stirred into a glass of water works/helps
Recovery, hydration and nutrition is the flip side of triathlon (indeed any endurance sport). Time to get yourself tested for any allergies. For future races you may want to take your own food. FWIW I would never trust any food the night before a race unless I prepare it. Check out Ironman Tallinn, I’ll cheer you on 😎 Stay motivated you have years of racing in front of you 😉🙌
Thanks Dean! Absolutely mate
It was a tough day - Swim was horrible and the run was basically 3 miles climbing per lap
Everybody has an off
day guess this was your turn - learn from it and move one - when is your next race ?
Sorry this happened, Harry. You’ll come back stronger! Try rice in place of pizza/pasta, much easier on the stomach
I can't believe he ate pizza night before, I think it was day before that he meant. Loads of cheese and butter no bueno.
Thanks Mansi
@@ironmantooltime might sound weird to some but I've always had pizza the night before a race and never had any issues. I'd say most top athletes do have pizza the night before
@@Harry-Palmer fair enough, superstition an all! I avoid all dairy day before, but sounds like that's not ur problem here 👍
Don’t worry bud, shit happens it’s what you afterwards which counts, just keep it real 👍
Thanks dude
I have been in a similar position. Not sure what is harder to DNS or to DNF.
Yeah they both suck dont they haha
Head up, you'll be back stronger
Real shame, but it’s something not controllable and will happen to everyone at some point. Looking at the actual results it’s mad to think the ‘in the mix’ top 5 you were faster on the swim and only 10-15 mins behind on the bike despite having the stomach issues. Hopefully you do another one!
Thanks Jacob! I'' be back for sure
Just hang in there mate, we all get ups and downs. Just wondering why you took on one of the toughest races for your first. Are their races more suitable do you think.
Thanks Steve! hahah what can I say, I've clearly got a screw loose
Stick to the middle distance get some more results and give it a few more yrs before going longer
Dude I know the feeling. Same weekend. Same result. Sorry mate ❤
Thanks for this Mike. Yeah part of me is wondering if it's something more serious as it's still lingering around now
Could it have been the PH1500?
Sounds like you couldn't of done any more... what more can your friends/family/supporters ask for ? (rhetorical question)
hahah thanks Ashley
Next...... Ironman Portugal.....? (I could do with the support ha)
You’ll be in top form for the next one
Thanks mate
Keep your chins up mate … it will come 👍
