It is also the oldest form in shape and size. Raku ware is a tea bowl designed for the tea ceremony. The tea bowl has a wide bottom, called "chasenzuri," which makes it easy to turn a tea whisk and serve tea. Also, the cup itself curves slightly inward at the rim, which prevents tea from dripping out of the bowl when drinking and makes drinking the tea elegantly. It is formed by hand-twisting or hand-kneading, using only hands and spatulas, and is characterized by slight distortions and thick shapes. The entire shape, which is not perfect from side to side, expresses the "beauty of imperfection". There is also a rating system for matcha bowls, "Ichi-Raku, Ni-Hagi, and San-Karatsu," (means 1st rank, 2nd and 3rd) with Raku ware being the most prestigious matcha bowl.
The only ceramics I've made have been raku but they were not made exactly like this movie shows. I followed the instructions of my two former co-workers and ceramic art teachers. I am a photographic and mixed media artist (I was teaching photography when the three of us taught at the same university).
What about glazing? The black is glaze, no? The original clay is red, the bottom of the finished tea bowls are white. Did the red clay turn white? Perhaps, they don't want to give away all their secrets. Great demo. Thanks!
Does this produce a "Food Safe" finish? I'm new to pottery and looking to get started just by pinching clay (can't afford a wheel). I would like to make some dinnerware, and specifically a Matcha Bowl, but have been running into trouble trying to determine best practice for Food Safe glaze/finish. Any insight?
I really admire the process, tradition and result but please enlighten me; are these chawans considered food safe since they are fired at low temperature? Also, could we get a hint on the glaze composition? Thank you.
Rakuchawan is said to have been created by Rakuchojiro, who was inspired by Sen no Rikyu, and the technique has been passed down to this day. This is the tea bowl that Rikyu had Chojiro, the first generation of the Raku family, make by instructing him on his preferred shape, size, color, etc., and it has been produced in this way for 400 years, from the first generation to the present day.
I'm sure there's a typos on the let dry for a several day's it should say a few hours, the clay needs to be leather hard to complete the trimming process, if it was day's it'd be to hard to trim

Pretty much how I used to make my raku bowls. I can recommend a visit to the Raku family house in Kyoto, it's humbling
My favorite thing, our art teacher in high school did this in the middle of our high school courtyard. Amazing! Never forgot.
That’s amazing ! Thank you for your comment !
This is the first time I see non-electric wheels, very good.
It is quite satisfying to see ! Thank you for your comment !
Astounding-they doon't need a glaze and can withstand that temperature change. I have always admired raku ceramics. :-)
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

There is a special beauty in pottery NOT thrown on the (electric) wheel.
Thank you so much

these are absolute master craftsmen i have no doubt the vessels are safe

Thank you.
why low temperature? They say firing temperature is not disclosed
If it's raku then it cannot be used for drinking tea, right?
Why on earth not? I have a raku bowl that I use for making matcha and it looks fantastic every time.
@@bag3lmonst3r72 Just what I was taught, that's why I asked. Thanks for your response.
@@ohioskane363The colourful Western-style raku is not food-safe. This type of kuro raku is fine for tea ceremonies, but nothing else.
@@bag3lmonst3r72 It's amazing how many "partially right but not really" things I learned in a pottery class years ago. Thank you for your response! ❤️

窯から出して水につけてわれないもんなんですか
Human beings are procreated from soil, that's why we love and adore the soil, and experience gives wonderful shape to it. 🥰🙏.
Yes indeed! Thank you for your comment !
Procreated from soil? No, from water.
Szivesen tanulnak Öntől!
Caraca meu, uma peça custa 2600,00 dolares, convertido no Brasil é 13.650,00 reais ou 10 salarios minimos!
but why did you skip the glazing? :(
They did not show the glazing in the video, but the commentary said “apply glaze and bake”.
