One of the best books on this subject is called Born to Run by Christopher McDougall. He figured out why the Tarahumara Indians could run hundreds of miles and never get injured. The notion that the human foot is inherently flawed and automatically needs some kind of corrective device is kind of nuts.
I imagine shoes were originally made to protect against extreme natural environments, and then later for sanitary & protection because of an increasing Industrialized environment. However, it's true in the modern western world that shoe as related to function have broken down. Nature made our feet fine tuning over millennia, they are perfection. The foot is really tightly bound with most closed toed shoes, and you could write thousands of pages on what women are expected to endure. Great book recommendation BTW.
I'm barefoot almost all of the time, my father always said, 2 important things good shoes good bed, we spend half our life in one and half the other, and he's right ❤️

My grandmas barefooted for mostly entire time of her life, walking around stepping little stone in rural area, and she had healthy bone n heart. She passed way at 93 yo.

Great content! Muslims are required to walk barefoot without socks around the kaaba when they go on a pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia. Grounding does have a positive effect on the body because you feel more energetic immediately after. They have to walk barefoot in Mosques too and while praying, so at specific times during the day, shoes have to come off. Also, in many households, shoes are not allowed once inside.
1 year ago I started to follow this advice walking bare footed .different shoes with a soft sole which helped an cured the problem.an the pain from the incorrect shoes ,the shoe salesmen told me repeatedly I wanted a firm walking shoe .against his advice I bought shoes 1 size larger flexible an soft ,these are the most comfortable shoes thanks for helping me stop the tenants from growing trough the skin of my feet

As a [former] personal trainer it is frustratingly hard to explain this to society, especially after the corporate world slandered the Vibram 5 Fingers into obscurity. Plus there’s the whole ‘Grounding/Earthing’ thing (even if Earthing is just psychological, we all love walking barefoot so there is, as you mention, therapeutic at the very least). I even walk barefoot to speed up sprained ankles🤷🏼♂️
I wear Vibram’s toe shoes. Got a few different pairs. I stopped wearing regular shoes because they hurt my feet, and if I try to wear “normal” shoes now my feet will protest like a cranky old woman! Iv’e been wearing Vibrams for years and it is very normal to me, so its always interesting when people ask if I like them. My answer is always, “Yes! I love them.”
I got into minimalist shoes a few years ago, and after 20 years of having ankle problems that began with sprains in my teens, my ankles stopped having issues. No problem at all with ankles. This year I've moved into total barefoot walking, and my feet, ankles, and legs feel better than ever. The muscles are ripping out in a way that even heavy squats can't replicate. Jogging barefooted across the lacrosse fields in my front yard makes my legs SCREAM.

Great video again thanks, since a severe traumatic brain injury in late 2017 I have been having problems with my balance walking outside! But not indoors! when asking for help with my balance since my accident I was informed a number of times that it was because I felt safe at home indoors and not outside. Well last year I came across barefoot walking and barefoot shoes (Vivobarefoot Primus Lite III shoes) and my balance was fixed. Since I walked over 950 kilometres last year and would have walked much more if it was not for the heat of Summer and my brain injury feeling like it's boiling above 19°c and have to stay indoors throughout summer. Anyway I'm still alive and trying to rest, walk, rest and sleep and repeat each day.
The more I watch and listen to Dr Eric Berg the more I learn and the more I like him , he makes it easier to understand the A-Z of medical Conditions and their associated remedies. Well done Sir .
Great info as always! I’m 52 and researched this in Feb ‘22 due to a recommendation form a coworker who runs barefoot. The more I researched, the more I realized how flawed “normal” shoes are. Ever since, my everyday shoes are a couple of pairs of Xero shoes with zero drop and only 4mm soles and a pair of Lems that are zero drop and about 10mm thick soles for work. The experience has been wonderful. My feet have become so much stronger and my lower back pain has gone away, especially standing for extended periods like in a line. I really recommend you research this and give it a shot. It’s so logical and makes so much sense.
My mother was almost always barefoot for her 59 years of life and hated wearing shoes and never in her life wore socks and she was never happier than when barefoot and when she passed away all she wanted was to be buried in a simple outfit and barefoot because as she would say we come into this world barefoot so why shouldn't we leave it barefoot 🦋🤗🙏 god bless her soul she was always right🤗🤗❤️❤️
My nosy neighbor criticized me for allowing my 2 year old to walk outside (mostly on grass) without shoes. My baby hates shoes. I’m glad I have some info to share with the nosy Nancy next time she has something negative to say!
My feet have been a mess since birth. Severe club feet and numerous surgeries. I did the corrective braces for 12 years. Then most of my adult life wearing a 5/8 heel-to-toe lift on my right shoe. In 2014 I ditched the lift and gave barefoot shoes a try and never looked back. Xero is my favorite and the only brand I wear. I walk barefoot as much as possible too. My feet have never been happier.
Flux is also a great brand. Also, my younger sister was born with club feet and also wore braces as an infant. A chiropractor helped her and she was walking normally by elementary school
I'm 52 this year.i have just recently decided that I need to go barefoot at least 90 percent of the time due to my hip issues. it really does help to walk and run barefoot. I do have to stop a lot to take out thorns though
When I do deadlifts or squats for example, I do it either barefoot or wear barefoot shoes which are almost like socks. You feel ground and it helps with your exercise.
I do this as well. I tried to workout in gym shoes after going barefoot and it wasn't the same, I ended up just taking the shoes off. Barefoot is way better.

Dr Berg is spot on. Six months ago I bought LEMS footwear (shoes, sneaks, boots) and Dr. Ray McCallahan’s Correct Toes toe spreaders. All the aches and pains from my lower back to my feet either disappeared or have been much alleviated. Oh, and I’m 75 years old. I wish I had started earlier. But it’s never too late to start whatever your age. My quality of life has improved dramatically.

@@Julia29853 I found the advice for the Correct Toes was just the ticket for the footwear. Build up to wearing them longer over time. Start with 30 to 60 minutes.Increase wearing time when that becomes comfortable. For me it took two to three weeks before I was able to wear them all day. I understand that any individual’s adaptation time can vary, depending on the shape of not only your feet, but your lower legs. I was really pleased to see Dr. Berg mention the effect of wearing traditional shoes on not only your feet but your lower legs and knees. That’s been my experience and has been confirmed by experts like Dr.Ray McCallahan. Your feet, while critically important, are part of a larger system connecting to them.
Dr Berg you helped me understand that most prescription medicines or tools dont solve the root cause of a problem, but only make people dependant on them or take away certain symptoms. Thank you for your work and I hope you will keep uploading content. Love from the Netherlands :)
This is not true. Every RX that I write is to treat to control a condition or treat to cure the root cause of a disease process. Imagine a world without HAART, without PCN, without levothryroxine, just to name a few.
It's true the healthcare companies want people financially enslaved to their medicines\tools for temporary relief of their issues. Any cures discovered by doctors and scientists today are patented and locked away. Any natural cures are only mentioned on TH-cam channels, but will rarely or never be recommended by your healthcare providers.
Again, loving that you have brought back the dry erase board! I suffered chronic low back pain for 6 six years. I tried everything. Finally in 2021 I quit my well paying career so that I could make changes to my life. First thing I did was removed my shoes. I would then stand against a wall to get get as many points of contact as possible. This showed me where the tension and over compensation was in my body. I now live a very healthy and extremely active life. I can jump, run, H.I.I.T .........
Some people as well , who believe in earth or nature positive vibrations, recommend walking barefoot in parks and beaches, so the person involved would pick up these signals like sounds; to recover from various diseases. It's usually the same healing sound we would hear when we listen or stick our ears into a large tree trunk, especially in forests or wild parks ( kinda like the sound inside a sea shell). I have flat feet. I just bought barefeet-shoes from physiotherapeutic shop and I couldn’t be happier. Only problem is that they are the only shoes I’d want to wear. Thanks again for great video. Your given knowledge has helped alot with my T1D.
I’ve always loved being barefoot. Majority of the people around me think I’m crazy. But I feel more balance and connected to the ground. Feeling with the feet I found to be a good thing, and shoes were torture(ESPECIALLY ARCH SUPPORT! But my mom especially believes you need arch support!) I also don’t feel comfortable walking heel to front. I go front first usually, and the heel might follow. 🤷🏻♀️
Dr. Berg, please explain to this person that walking toe to heel is not healthy and probably indicates a very tight short Achilles tendon, or boney block at the ankle. This may be tolerable when very young, but should be looked at by a professional. The long term results of this can be quite bad.
Ty for pointing out the existence of two very different things in modern medicine: 1.) the correcting the "things" / health statuses and issues and 2.) managing of the symptoms which, managing of the symptoms, is not only ... sufficient and more or less the sheer lose of time, effort and funds, ( luxurious spending of the time, the efforts and the best knowledge including the best intentions of the highly educated and highly experienced medical professionals) but dangerously enough, very lucrative for by the time it becomes the nurturing, the growing of the existing symptoms it somehow, and we are, but of course, completely oblivious of haw it happens, starts causing even more of entirely new symptoms. For 44 years I worked at a machine shop with heavy boots, I retired a few years ago and my hips and feet and knees hurt Quite a bit I had to find a solution and it was going barefoot or at least flat wide cross trainers, it worked and now I can return to walking my dogs a few miles.
I discovered Dr Berg in 2017 after being diagnosed with fatty liver. I was on statins beta blocker and something for anxiety I have no idea what that medication was . I knew I didn't want to stay on these medications .Through this channel I learned intermittent fasting , healthy keto and healthy foods probably the most important thing I learned was never drink your sugars so I never do , also I stated going barefoot as much as possible 5 years now and yes it is everything he said in this video and more .thank you Eric Berg for your work you have made a changed and healthy 59 year old of me and by the way I see a transformation in you too you look great sir .

But I found that crocs keep my feet hot because there isn’t much air circulation around my foot. At least the ones I have are like that. Even though they have vents my feet sweat a lot. I have clogs, which is mostly what they make and it’s out of rubber.
I hated walking barefoot. But, was convinced to buy Xero shoes (after watching the commercial), which is close to walking barefoot. It was an adjustment period for a few weeks, but now I cannot go back.
I have such a problem w my feet burning at nite depending on my foot wear,seems anything plastic or rubber,are there any natural insoles to keep the burn away? At home and gardening im always barefoot and no problems.
Thank you Dr. Berg. If I wear shoes , I need a cane or a walker. A cane for hard surfaces and a walker for uneven surfaces. Otherwise , I lose my balance and am liable to fall. I keep getting told to wear shoes with expensive orthotics all the time. I do have a diabetic ulcer on the bottom of one foot that will not heal from dealing with diabetes. It is the last one left from more than 13 years of having them. Since following your recommendations, I no longer deal with diabetes, just the damage that it did. It's wonderful to hear you say and explain that I am not wrong in feeling that shoes cause this balance problem.
Dr Berg, I would be so sick with the progression of many diseases today if you were not doing all those videos. I'm still suffering but, many symptoms has improved are much better. I'm so grateful for all the work and effort you put to share so many helpful tips on different topics.
I have heavily stained feet from gardening bare foot. I was perplexed when you said to wear gloves in the garden. I still garden barefoot without gloves and no chemicals.
This is exactly why I switched my athletic shoes to zero drop shoes (xero shoes has been my choice) after my knee surgery. I have also gotten the xero trekking sandals for around camp....Eventually I will switch all my shoes (hiking books, dress shoes, etc) to a zero drop, wide toe box shoe..... I turned my wife onto the same shoe and it's already helping her bunion....
as a barber with 30 years experience of standing on my feet all day without a break, & with some serious foot pain starting to creep up on me, i recently went with shoes WITH OUT a big jacked up super cushioned heel & bought a pair of san antonio shoe maker shoes (aka- sas) called high streets... theyre kinda shaped like a pair of my ol lace up vans... flat & level & a wide toe box, & i can tell ya, after standing behind a barber chair for 9 to 10 hours, they made a world of difference!
Thank you Dr. Berg, your videos have helped me in so many way. I never wear shoes in the home and as a child oftentimes would run around barefoot, I'm guessing it was some innate wisdom at play. It's really hard as a woman to get comfortable shoes that look good, 4 inch stilettos are gorgeous I can't deny that. However, it's probably best to wear them only on special occasions.

Great video Dr. Berg. I recently discovered your videos and I enjoy them very much. They’re not full of hype, self-promoting, ads, etc.; they are straightforward, good common sense, practical, and scientifically based on day-to-day information to be a better and healthier human being. It is clear that you want nothing from your audience other than for us to improve our daily lives since imbalance and injury are part of the human condition. Great info on walking barefoot and there is one more added benefit that I can now attest to personally, and it relates to “being grounded”… literally. I’m going to assume you’ve heard of “grounding or earthing”, and because you did not mention it in this video, I’m going to also assume that you feel the jury is still out on that subject. The earthing movement as you may know was spearheaded by Clint Ober who invented the grounding mat for those like me with a predominately urban lifestyle. I won’t go into detail about it here, other than to say that grounding via walking barefoot on “real earth” is a real thing to reduce and eliminate inflammation in the body. I’ve had chronic back pain since the ’90s from a gym workout injury; after using Mr. Ober’s grounding mat for about 3 weeks, I can say I’m pain-free. I continue to use it every day; hence, I do not know if the pain would return if I stopped. However, with your general message in your video that most remedies “manage” injury, pain, and discomfort, so does the grounding mat… but it works. My main point is the same as yours, grounding oneself by merely walking barefoot on dirt, grass, and earth, can and does reduce and eliminate inflammation-type pain. I've run barefoot for 15+ years. I've done half-marathons, 15+ mile trail runs, even crossed the Grand Canyon in a day with zero blisters. The Vibram Five Finger and thin Injini toe sock is my normal wear. At the moment, I have day to day left knee pain and my BMI is close to 35(working on it), but I can still do (2) 12 minute miles barefoot a couple times a week with no pain/blisters/injury(I can still hit a 6min pace, just not sustained). I would caution anyone to acclimate to faster running VERY VERY slowly(think months to years). I did have a probable 3rd metatarsal stress fracture once almost 10 years ago, but my bones are much stronger now. When anyone asks me how to run barefoot mechanically, I say it's easy...you already know how. Everyone knows how to tiptoe barefoot....just do that, but faster and ease down the exaggerated motion. Tiptoeing is intended for minimal noise, but it happens it's also minimal stress on joints, which is the key.
I wish I could walk barefoot on the sand, but ever since I broke one foot walking on the sand barefoot is painful. Still I concur with your great advice. (JF)
I found your you tube videos months ago. I've had 4 by-passes at 39yr old now 61. For 20 years my bypasses stayed open only me taking liquid magnesium and 1 aspirin a day and apple cider vinegar. Well I got slack and stop the magnesium and before I knew it heart problems, stents and taking the doctors meds telling me do or die, after 6 months all them closed and bypass totally blocked. Thank God for some collateral Arteries starting so making it back a little. But your video are so informative and thank you please keep doing them. Going to start on my million of dandelions in back and try them. Appreciate you
It’s interesting, but most of my childhood I was walking barefoot as I would spend most of my time at my grandma’s country house. My feet are never flat and never stink, even after wearing shoes and socks all day. My daughter, who loves to wear shoes has very flat feet, but younger one, who can’t stand wearing shoes has that beautiful arch
Highly recommend using toe spreaders too. Doing corrective exercises for planter fasciitis is the way to permanently correct flat feet. Amazing transformation to a full arch.
As a child you couldn't get me into shoes same as glasses noticed my eyes got lazier and didn't want to end up wearing coke bottle glasses.I will now revisit my childhood and go barefoot as much a possible..thanks!
I’ve had my vivobarefoot shoes for 3-4 years now. They’re amazing but! I suffer from an eating disorder and often find myself gaining and losing 20lbs per year. I can tell you that when I’m at the apogee of my weight gain, my feet while stronger are still far more pained because the weight gain is often quick and my feet don’t ever have time to adjust to it. So just exercise caution. Being on the heavier side with barefoot shoes can be painful.
@@experimenthealthyketo83 long before I found Dr.Berg I found Dr.Ekberg. So I do keto and IF and fasting, but an eating disorder has the power to creep in when you least expect it. Im doing alright now.

Thanks for addressing this problem! I spent a lot of money in arch supports until I discovered Vibram Fivefingers: I bought a pair and in a very short time I tossed the supports in the bin. Vibram introduced this concept of separated toes and barefoot walking (and suddenly a ton of articles about men being born to walk and run barefoot became mainstream). I then tried also huarache sandals like those made by Xero Shoes. In both cases, I was extremely happy. I own a dozen pairs now and I will never go back to thick soled shoes

I’m ALAYS barefoot- hate to wear things on my feet. The funny part of it is that I was named after an old fisherman that gave my mother a pair of shoes because she was always barefoot when she was pregnant with me.🥰 I’ve always had flat feet too. Want to try Zero shoes.
I agree with his statement of walking barefoot on the grass or sand. I had plantar fasciitis and went to Turks & Caicos for about a week. All I did was walk barefoot on the sand all day. When I got home I noticed that I didnt have any more pain in my feet and didnt have pain for many years. Unfortunately my plantar fasciitis is back and I need to go on another beach vacation.
He's right. It does make a difference. Switching to Xero shoes was a challenge at first. Plus, I was going against the advice of my podiatrist, who wanted me to wear custom orthotics and never go barefooted. They felt good, but my feet weren't that strong and would tire out pretty quickly. It took a few weeks, but I got to where I was using them for everything except for running. Now, I'm even doing some of my running in them. My feet feel young again. Strong, healthy, and they don't hurt anymore. I wish more doctors understood this.

Even though I have known about this on a surface level, I hadn’t really looked at the science behind it until more recently. Stopped wearing high heels as it just didn’t seem worth the pain. I’m constantly amazed at the videos I find with you Dr Berg even though I feel like I’ve watched so many of them. Thank you once again!! ❤

Thank you, Dr. Berg, for your great videos! The point you made right in the beginning sums up a lot of what I'm discovering in my own health journey right now. That in modern (especially Western) medicine, the focus is so directed towards managing and living with symptoms that we rarely address the actual problem. I'm 42 years old, 318lbs, and just figuring out that everything I've been doing to address my health, foot and back pain, and weight have been based on bad information. About a year and a half ago, I tried my first pair of "barefoot/minimalist" shoes and after a year of transition, I have switched almosr completely over. I barely have any plantar fasciitis pain in either foot most days now, and I also noticed that my lower back pain disappeared almost immediately. Flat feet were never the problem. My feet just needed to be stronger and my postural alignment needed to be better. It's amazing how just changing shoes and spending a little more time barefoot helps. Now that I can move with less foot and back pain, I'm working on getting more active and making some changes to my diet. Please keep making these videos! Its hard to determine which information out there is good and bad, because there is so much and most of it has some research behind it....but I believe you are sharing some of the most realistic and helpful advice that I've found and can benefit from!

Good video! I bought 3 pair of barefoot wide shoes about 4 month’s ago for every day wear including, running/walking in the mornings. Wearing these barefoot shoes force you to walk/run correctly so you don’t land on your heal first which, creates shin splints, joint pain in knees, hips, back, etc,. The wide shoe/toe area allow your feet to expand so your feet are allowed to do what they were designed to do and spread out with each step to provide stability & balance by allowing muscles, tendons & bones to function as designed to do. It takes a little time retraining yourself to walk/run properly during this transition period but, your entire body will thank you with less, to no pain as we age. Of course the proper diet also plays a major role.
Your so right Dr. Berg, I was working on my vegetable garden ,planting and laying down a brick walkway in my HEAVY Work Boots, between doing a lot of bending and heavy lifting my feet were killing me and my back ,so I decided to take them off (wasn't bare foot did have thin socks ) WHAT A MAJOR DIFFENCE !!! It felt so good !! I lasted for hours and went out the next day too. I will take your advise about getting new shoes. Thank you for all that you do.
Throughout my youth I had to fight for going barefoot. Today, I do so when I please. People are still complaining, but much less, since I have moved the attention to my beard. Which I never cut. The sight of the beard is so disturbing, although almost not existent, that they don't see my missing teeth, often don't see I am overweight, and don't see if I have shoes or socks 😄
I switched to barefoot shoes hoping to help my body get fewer ankle sprains about three years ago. I was getting one to two sprains a year that were bad enough for me to need crutches for multiple weeks. The first year I sprained my ankle once in an overgrown field with a deep hole in it. I only needed to rest that one a day before using it. No sprains since then, despite frequent walks on uneven terrain with my family multiple times a week.
Can't be sure,but I have gone barefoot for the better part of my life except when working/winter/military service/where required, I attend church barefoot and have been ask to leave a many of public places for lack of shoes,but here is the trade off, no arthritis ✌️

I have osteoarthritis with bone spurs in my RT foot and ankle. I was given orthodics and told to NEVER go barefoot. I walk barefoot in my garden and also at work because I'm a lifeguard. I think it's good for me and it's not really anymore painful than when I'm wearing my shoes with orthodics. They said it would cause more damage..? A little over a year and a half ago I couldn't walk at all. After finding Dr. Jason Fung's books and videos and Dr. Berg's and others, I've lost over 150 lbs (!) by eating LCHF keto, OMAD and longer fasts. I'm so thankful and now I'm able to be active again and swimming. I'm in great health but I still have pain in my foot and ankle. Just wondering if walking barefoot will help or hurt like they said. One of the best books on this subject is called Born to Run by Christopher McDougall. He figured out why the Tarahumara Indians could run hundreds of miles and never get injured. The notion that the human foot is inherently flawed and automatically needs some kind of corrective device is kind of nuts.

Lots of the body has flaws that are corrected but using the right methods is I think the key takeaway here. We are not perfect.

I imagine shoes were originally made to protect against extreme natural environments, and then later for sanitary & protection because of an increasing Industrialized environment. However, it's true in the modern western world that shoe as related to function have broken down. Nature made our feet fine tuning over millennia, they are perfection. The foot is really tightly bound with most closed toed shoes, and you could write thousands of pages on what women are expected to endure. Great book recommendation BTW.
The two most neglected parts of our body which we should be really giving time and taking care of are aur TEETH and FEET.

My grandmas barefooted for mostly entire time of her life, walking around stepping little stone in rural area, and she had healthy bone n heart. She passed way at 93 yo.
I feel more “ in control” when I am barefoot. I have hiked in my bare feet. I now garden in my bare feet. The woman who does my pedicures is very understanding. 😬🙏🏼❤️

Great content! Muslims are required to walk barefoot without socks around the kaaba when they go on a pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia. Grounding does have a positive effect on the body because you feel more energetic immediately after. They have to walk barefoot in Mosques too and while praying, so at specific times during the day, shoes have to come off. Also, in many households, shoes are not allowed once inside.
1 year ago I started to follow this advice walking bare footed .different shoes with a soft sole which helped an cured the problem.an the pain from the incorrect shoes ,the shoe salesmen told me repeatedly I wanted a firm walking shoe .against his advice I bought shoes 1 size larger flexible an soft ,these are the most comfortable shoes thanks for helping me stop the tenants from growing trough the skin of my feet

As a [former] personal trainer it is frustratingly hard to explain this to society, especially after the corporate world slandered the Vibram 5 Fingers into obscurity.
Plus there’s the whole ‘Grounding/Earthing’ thing (even if Earthing is just psychological, we all love walking barefoot so there is, as you mention, therapeutic at the very least).
I even walk barefoot to speed up sprained ankles🤷🏼♂️
I wear Vibram’s toe shoes. Got a few different pairs. I stopped wearing regular shoes because they hurt my feet, and if I try to wear “normal” shoes now my feet will protest like a cranky old woman! Iv’e been wearing Vibrams for years and it is very normal to me, so its always interesting when people ask if I like them. My answer is always, “Yes! I love them.”

I got into minimalist shoes a few years ago, and after 20 years of having ankle problems that began with sprains in my teens, my ankles stopped having issues. No problem at all with ankles. This year I've moved into total barefoot walking, and my feet, ankles, and legs feel better than ever. The muscles are ripping out in a way that even heavy squats can't replicate. Jogging barefooted across the lacrosse fields in my front yard makes my legs SCREAM.
Almost three years on the vibram's 5 fingers and feeling sooo good, I could even say I feel a lightness in my whole body.

Great video again thanks, since a severe traumatic brain injury in late 2017 I have been having problems with my balance walking outside!
But not indoors! when asking for help with my balance since my accident I was informed a number of times that it was because I felt safe at home indoors and not outside.
Well last year I came across barefoot walking and barefoot shoes (Vivobarefoot Primus Lite III shoes) and my balance was fixed.
Since I walked over 950 kilometres last year and would have walked much more if it was not for the heat of Summer and my brain injury feeling like it's boiling above 19°c and have to stay indoors throughout summer.
Anyway I'm still alive and trying to rest, walk, rest and sleep and repeat each day.
Ok! Have you checked Dr Berg's videos on brain injuries? And on salt & potassium to help dealing with hot weather?

Great info as always! I’m 52 and researched this in Feb ‘22 due to a recommendation form a coworker who runs barefoot. The more I researched, the more I realized how flawed “normal” shoes are. Ever since, my everyday shoes are a couple of pairs of Xero shoes with zero drop and only 4mm soles and a pair of Lems that are zero drop and about 10mm thick soles for work. The experience has been wonderful. My feet have become so much stronger and my lower back pain has gone away, especially standing for extended periods like in a line.
I really recommend you research this and give it a shot. It’s so logical and makes so much sense.
My mother was almost always barefoot for her 59 years of life and hated wearing shoes and never in her life wore socks and she was never happier than when barefoot and when she passed away all she wanted was to be buried in a simple outfit and barefoot because as she would say we come into this world barefoot so why shouldn't we leave it barefoot 🦋🤗🙏 god bless her soul she was always right🤗🤗❤️❤️

My feet have been a mess since birth. Severe club feet and numerous surgeries. I did the corrective braces for 12 years. Then most of my adult life wearing a 5/8 heel-to-toe lift on my right shoe. In 2014 I ditched the lift and gave barefoot shoes a try and never looked back. Xero is my favorite and the only brand I wear. I walk barefoot as much as possible too. My feet have never been happier.
Flux is also a great brand. Also, my younger sister was born with club feet and also wore braces as an infant. A chiropractor helped her and she was walking normally by elementary school

I'm 52 this year.i have just recently decided that I need to go barefoot at least 90 percent of the time due to my hip issues. it really does help to walk and run barefoot. I do have to stop a lot to take out thorns though
When I do deadlifts or squats for example, I do it either barefoot or wear barefoot shoes which are almost like socks. You feel ground and it helps with your exercise.

Love this! I am 76 years and still go barefoot whenever I can, which is most of the time! Not having shoes in the summer in my childhood didn't bother me at all!

Dr Berg is spot on. Six months ago I bought LEMS footwear (shoes, sneaks, boots) and Dr. Ray McCallahan’s Correct Toes toe spreaders. All the aches and pains from my lower back to my feet either disappeared or have been much alleviated. Oh, and I’m 75 years old. I wish I had started earlier. But it’s never too late to start whatever your age. My quality of life has improved dramatically.

@@Julia29853 I found the advice for the Correct Toes was just the ticket for the footwear. Build up to wearing them longer over time. Start with 30 to 60 minutes.Increase wearing time when that becomes comfortable. For me it took two to three weeks before I was able to wear them all day. I understand that any individual’s adaptation time can vary, depending on the shape of not only your feet, but your lower legs. I was really pleased to see Dr. Berg mention the effect of wearing traditional shoes on not only your feet but your lower legs and knees. That’s been my experience and has been confirmed by experts like Dr.Ray McCallahan. Your feet, while critically important, are part of a larger system connecting to them.
Dr Berg you helped me understand that most prescription medicines or tools dont solve the root cause of a problem, but only make people dependant on them or take away certain symptoms. Thank you for your work and I hope you will keep uploading content. Love from the Netherlands :)
This is not true. Every RX that I write is to treat to control a condition or treat to cure the root cause of a disease process. Imagine a world without HAART, without PCN, without levothryroxine, just to name a few.

It's true the healthcare companies want people financially enslaved to their medicines\tools for temporary relief of their issues. Any cures discovered by doctors and scientists today are patented and locked away. Any natural cures are only mentioned on TH-cam channels, but will rarely or never be recommended by your healthcare providers.
Again, loving that you have brought back the dry erase board! I suffered chronic low back pain for 6 six years. I tried everything. Finally in 2021 I quit my well paying career so that I could make changes to my life. First thing I did was removed my shoes. I would then stand against a wall to get get as many points of contact as possible. This showed me where the tension and over compensation was in my body. I now live a very healthy and extremely active life. I can jump, run, H.I.I.T .........
Some people as well , who believe in earth or nature positive vibrations, recommend walking barefoot in parks and beaches, so the person involved would pick up these signals like sounds; to recover from various diseases. It's usually the same healing sound we would hear when we listen or stick our ears into a large tree trunk, especially in forests or wild parks ( kinda like the sound inside a sea shell). I’ve always loved being barefoot. Majority of the people around me think I’m crazy. But I feel more balance and connected to the ground. Feeling with the feet I found to be a good thing, and shoes were torture(ESPECIALLY ARCH SUPPORT! But my mom especially believes you need arch support!)
I also don’t feel comfortable walking heel to front. I go front first usually, and the heel might follow. 🤷🏻♀️
Dr. Berg, please explain to this person that walking toe to heel is not healthy and probably indicates a very tight short Achilles tendon, or boney block at the ankle. This may be tolerable when very young, but should be looked at by a professional. The long term results of this can be quite bad.
My mom too lol and I also sometimes walk toe to heal in short intervals especially on stepping stones I understand what your talking about .
Ty for pointing out the existence of two very different things in modern medicine:
1.) the correcting the "things" / health statuses and issues and
2.) managing of the symptoms which, managing of the symptoms, is not only ... sufficient and more or less the sheer lose of time, effort and funds, ( luxurious spending of the time, the efforts and the best knowledge including the best intentions of the highly educated and highly experienced medical professionals) but dangerously enough, very lucrative for by the time it becomes the nurturing, the growing of the existing symptoms it somehow, and we are, but of course, completely oblivious of haw it happens, starts causing even more of entirely new symptoms. For 44 years I worked at a machine shop with heavy boots, I retired a few years ago and my hips and feet and knees hurt Quite a bit I had to find a solution and it was going barefoot or at least flat wide cross trainers, it worked and now I can return to walking my dogs a few miles.
Also try turmeric.
I discovered Dr Berg in 2017 after being diagnosed with fatty liver. I was on statins beta blocker and something for anxiety I have no idea what that medication was . I knew I didn't want to stay on these medications .Through this channel I learned intermittent fasting , healthy keto and healthy foods probably the most important thing I learned was never drink your sugars so I never do , also I stated going barefoot as much as possible 5 years now and yes it is everything he said in this video and more .thank you Eric Berg for your work you have made a changed and healthy 59 year old of me and by the way I see a transformation in you too you look great sir .

But I found that crocs keep my feet hot because there isn’t much air circulation around my foot. At least the ones I have are like that. Even though they have vents my feet sweat a lot. I have clogs, which is mostly what they make and it’s out of rubber.
I hated walking barefoot. But, was convinced to buy Xero shoes (after watching the commercial), which is close to walking barefoot. It was an adjustment period for a few weeks, but now I cannot go back.

Thank you Dr. Berg. If I wear shoes , I need a cane or a walker. A cane for hard surfaces and a walker for uneven surfaces. Otherwise , I lose my balance and am liable to fall. I keep getting told to wear shoes with expensive orthotics all the time. I do have a diabetic ulcer on the bottom of one foot that will not heal from dealing with diabetes. It is the last one left from more than 13 years of having them. Since following your recommendations, I no longer deal with diabetes, just the damage that it did. It's wonderful to hear you say and explain that I am not wrong in feeling that shoes cause this balance problem.

I have heavily stained feet from gardening bare foot. I was perplexed when you said to wear gloves in the garden. I still garden barefoot without gloves and no chemicals.
This is exactly why I switched my athletic shoes to zero drop shoes (xero shoes has been my choice) after my knee surgery. I have also gotten the xero trekking sandals for around camp....Eventually I will switch all my shoes (hiking books, dress shoes, etc) to a zero drop, wide toe box shoe..... I turned my wife onto the same shoe and it's already helping her bunion....
as a barber with 30 years experience of standing on my feet all day without a break, & with some serious foot pain starting to creep up on me, i recently went with shoes WITH OUT a big jacked up super cushioned heel & bought a pair of san antonio shoe maker shoes (aka- sas) called high streets... theyre kinda shaped like a pair of my ol lace up vans... flat & level & a wide toe box, & i can tell ya, after standing behind a barber chair for 9 to 10 hours, they made a world of difference!

Thank you Dr. Berg, your videos have helped me in so many way. I never wear shoes in the home and as a child oftentimes would run around barefoot, I'm guessing it was some innate wisdom at play. It's really hard as a woman to get comfortable shoes that look good, 4 inch stilettos are gorgeous I can't deny that. However, it's probably best to wear them only on special occasions.

I recently discovered your videos and I enjoy them very much. They’re not full of hype, self-promoting, ads, etc.; they are straightforward, good common sense, practical, and scientifically based on day-to-day information to be a better and healthier human being. It is clear that you want nothing from your audience other than for us to improve our daily lives since imbalance and injury are part of the human condition.
Great info on walking barefoot and there is one more added benefit that I can now attest to personally, and it relates to “being grounded”… literally. I’m going to assume you’ve heard of “grounding or earthing”, and because you did not mention it in this video, I’m going to also assume that you feel the jury is still out on that subject.
The earthing movement as you may know was spearheaded by Clint Ober who invented the grounding mat for those like me with a predominately urban lifestyle. I won’t go into detail about it here, other than to say that grounding via walking barefoot on “real earth” is a real thing to reduce and eliminate inflammation in the body.
I’ve had chronic back pain since the ’90s from a gym workout injury; after using Mr. Ober’s grounding mat for about 3 weeks, I can say I’m pain-free. I continue to use it every day; hence, I do not know if the pain would return if I stopped.
However, with your general message in your video that most remedies “manage” injury, pain, and discomfort, so does the grounding mat… but it works. My main point is the same as yours, grounding oneself by merely walking barefoot on dirt, grass, and earth, can and does reduce and eliminate inflammation-type pain.

I've run barefoot for 15+ years. I've done half-marathons, 15+ mile trail runs, even crossed the Grand Canyon in a day with zero blisters. The Vibram Five Finger and thin Injini toe sock is my normal wear. At the moment, I have day to day left knee pain and my BMI is close to 35(working on it), but I can still do (2) 12 minute miles barefoot a couple times a week with no pain/blisters/injury(I can still hit a 6min pace, just not sustained). I would caution anyone to acclimate to faster running VERY VERY slowly(think months to years). I did have a probable 3rd metatarsal stress fracture once almost 10 years ago, but my bones are much stronger now. When anyone asks me how to run barefoot mechanically, I say it's easy...you already know how. Everyone knows how to tiptoe barefoot....just do that, but faster and ease down the exaggerated motion. Tiptoeing is intended for minimal noise, but it happens it's also minimal stress on joints, which is the key.
I wish I could walk barefoot on the sand, but ever since I broke one foot walking on the sand barefoot is painful. Still I concur with your great advice. (JF)

I found your you tube videos months ago. I've had 4 by-passes at 39yr old now 61. For 20 years my bypasses stayed open only me taking liquid magnesium and 1 aspirin a day and apple cider vinegar. Well I got slack and stop the magnesium and before I knew it heart problems, stents and taking the doctors meds telling me do or die, after 6 months all them closed and bypass totally blocked. Thank God for some collateral Arteries starting so making it back a little. But your video are so informative and thank you please keep doing them. Going to start on my million of dandelions in back and try them. Appreciate you

It’s interesting, but most of my childhood I was walking barefoot as I would spend most of my time at my grandma’s country house. My feet are never flat and never stink, even after wearing shoes and socks all day. My daughter, who loves to wear shoes has very flat feet, but younger one, who can’t stand wearing shoes has that beautiful arch

Highly recommend using toe spreaders too. Doing corrective exercises for planter fasciitis is the way to permanently correct flat feet. Amazing transformation to a full arch.

I’ve had my vivobarefoot shoes for 3-4 years now. They’re amazing but! I suffer from an eating disorder and often find myself gaining and losing 20lbs per year. I can tell you that when I’m at the apogee of my weight gain, my feet while stronger are still far more pained because the weight gain is often quick and my feet don’t ever have time to adjust to it. So just exercise caution. Being on the heavier side with barefoot shoes can be painful.
Have you considered using Dr Berg's videos on weight loss?

Thanks for addressing this problem! I spent a lot of money in arch supports until I discovered Vibram Fivefingers: I bought a pair and in a very short time I tossed the supports in the bin. Vibram introduced this concept of separated toes and barefoot walking (and suddenly a ton of articles about men being born to walk and run barefoot became mainstream). I then tried also huarache sandals like those made by Xero Shoes. In both cases, I was extremely happy. I own a dozen pairs now and I will never go back to thick soled shoes

I’m ALAYS barefoot- hate to wear things on my feet. The funny part of it is that I was named after an old fisherman that gave my mother a pair of shoes because she was always barefoot when she was pregnant with me.🥰 I’ve always had flat feet too. Want to try Zero shoes.

walking barefoot in wet sand on the beach completely re-sets my feet. it's like a reboot - pun intended.
I agree with his statement of walking barefoot on the grass or sand. I had plantar fasciitis and went to Turks & Caicos for about a week. All I did was walk barefoot on the sand all day. When I got home I noticed that I didnt have any more pain in my feet and didnt have pain for many years. Unfortunately my plantar fasciitis is back and I need to go on another beach vacation.
He's right. It does make a difference. Switching to Xero shoes was a challenge at first. Plus, I was going against the advice of my podiatrist, who wanted me to wear custom orthotics and never go barefooted.
They felt good, but my feet weren't that strong and would tire out pretty quickly. It took a few weeks, but I got to where I was using them for everything except for running. Now, I'm even doing some of my running in them. My feet feel young again. Strong, healthy, and they don't hurt anymore. I wish more doctors understood this.

@@experimenthealthyketo83 It was just a one time visit for a particular issue that cleared up pretty quickly. So once I was back to normal, I didn't schedule a follow-up. Maybe I should, just to let them know. :)
Same here. The podiatrist told me to wear shoes all the time because of my flat feet and plantar fasciitis.

Even though I have known about this on a surface level, I hadn’t really looked at the science behind it until more recently. Stopped wearing high heels as it just didn’t seem worth the pain. I’m constantly amazed at the videos I find with you Dr Berg even though I feel like I’ve watched so many of them. Thank you once again!! ❤
This is so informative. Thank you Dr Berg. Walking barefoot in nature is like searching for our forgotten roots. In our Indian culture always had the best rules that considered social as well as personal wellbeing, like walking barefoot.

Thank you, Dr. Berg, for your great videos! The point you made right in the beginning sums up a lot of what I'm discovering in my own health journey right now. That in modern (especially Western) medicine, the focus is so directed towards managing and living with symptoms that we rarely address the actual problem.
I'm 42 years old, 318lbs, and just figuring out that everything I've been doing to address my health, foot and back pain, and weight have been based on bad information.
About a year and a half ago, I tried my first pair of "barefoot/minimalist" shoes and after a year of transition, I have switched almosr completely over. I barely have any plantar fasciitis pain in either foot most days now, and I also noticed that my lower back pain disappeared almost immediately. Flat feet were never the problem. My feet just needed to be stronger and my postural alignment needed to be better. It's amazing how just changing shoes and spending a little more time barefoot helps.
Now that I can move with less foot and back pain, I'm working on getting more active and making some changes to my diet. Please keep making these videos! Its hard to determine which information out there is good and bad, because there is so much and most of it has some research behind it....but I believe you are sharing some of the most realistic and helpful advice that I've found and can benefit from!

What about the fact that being barefoot we are grounding ourselves to the earth, which has many health benefits. And best off all it's free.

Good video! I bought 3 pair of barefoot wide shoes about 4 month’s ago for every day wear including, running/walking in the mornings. Wearing these barefoot shoes force you to walk/run correctly so you don’t land on your heal first which, creates shin splints, joint pain in knees, hips, back, etc,. The wide shoe/toe area allow your feet to expand so your feet are allowed to do what they were designed to do and spread out with each step to provide stability & balance by allowing muscles, tendons & bones to function as designed to do. It takes a little time retraining yourself to walk/run properly during this transition period but, your entire body will thank you with less, to no pain as we age. Of course the proper diet also plays a major role.

Your so right Dr. Berg, I was working on my vegetable garden ,planting and laying down a brick walkway in my HEAVY Work Boots, between doing a lot of bending and heavy lifting my feet were killing me and my back ,so I decided to take them off (wasn't bare foot did have thin socks ) WHAT A MAJOR DIFFENCE !!! It felt so good !! I lasted for hours and went out the next day too. I will take your advise about getting new shoes. Thank you for all that you do.

Throughout my youth I had to fight for going barefoot. Today, I do so when I please. People are still complaining, but much less, since I have moved the attention to my beard. Which I never cut. The sight of the beard is so disturbing, although almost not existent, that they don't see my missing teeth, often don't see I am overweight, and don't see if I have shoes or socks 😄
Great tips and very true as I have experienced myself. I started walking barefoot and feel great. Soon I will invest in some barefoot shoes.
I switched to barefoot shoes hoping to help my body get fewer ankle sprains about three years ago. I was getting one to two sprains a year that were bad enough for me to need crutches for multiple weeks. The first year I sprained my ankle once in an overgrown field with a deep hole in it. I only needed to rest that one a day before using it. No sprains since then, despite frequent walks on uneven terrain with my family multiple times a week.
Can't be sure,but I have gone barefoot for the better part of my life except when working/winter/military service/where required, I attend church barefoot and have been ask to leave a many of public places for lack of shoes,but here is the trade off, no arthritis ✌️
Look at Corey, from the “reality” show “Dual Survival.”. He walks bare feet EVERYWHERE, even in the FL. Everglades! I do think his “barefoot-ness” is legit. Thanks, Dr. Berg!

I have osteoarthritis with bone spurs in my RT foot and ankle. I was given orthodics and told to NEVER go barefoot. I walk barefoot in my garden and also at work because I'm a lifeguard. I think it's good for me and it's not really anymore painful than when I'm wearing my shoes with orthodics. They said it would cause more damage..?
A little over a year and a half ago I couldn't walk at all. After finding Dr. Jason Fung's books and videos and Dr. Berg's and others, I've lost over 150 lbs (!) by eating LCHF keto, OMAD and longer fasts. I'm so thankful and now I'm able to be active again and swimming. I'm in great health but I still have pain in my foot and ankle. Just wondering if walking barefoot will help or hurt like they said. Anyone?? Thanks 👍🙂
