Ann, Angelina Jordan Astar, born January 10th in 2006 in Oslo, Dad Gerry Slattman (his family is swedish) Mom Sara Astar, Norwegian wir Iranian roots, maternal grandma Mery Zamany, Iranian painter and poetress in her own rights and inspiration to Angelina and Grandpa a japanese gentlemen with a big and generous heart, helping the homeless in Oslo. He died in November 2019 and AJ wrote "Million Miles" for him. From age 18 months AJ sings in English (no joke, there is a video) discovering the jazz collection of grandma when 2 yo. As said down below she studies music since age 4 beside going to normal school since age 6. When 6 yo, visiting grandmas home country with mom. Ultra short version: It is Winter in Teheran and freezing cold. She sees a poor girl with scarred feet trying to earn a livelihood for the family (Mom and big brother are dead). After talking to the girl, who thought her a princess and her mom a Queen ( AJs parents are well to do, because of dads job) is admiring AJs shoes. AJ tells her that the shoes does not fit her very well (lie, they were her most loved shoes) and gave them to the girl. Girl tells her, she will pray for AJ every day and AJ answers to her and her mom: I will not wear shoes when performing until every child has shoes. AJ gathered money since winning NGT 2014 for humanitarian and ecological causes. It is said 30 million USD. Stay safe and sound. Naturally she speaks fluently swedish, norse,

Great review! Angelina is a treasure. She has over 140 videos (and thousands of reviews) that will keep you busy for months. There are different ways to approach listening to her. Rusty Shackleford has put together a list of her songs. There are a number of fans who have posted wonderful mashups, comparisons and informative videos. I can't begin to list all my favorites, but here are some key ones. I Who Have Nothing (5 yrs), Norways Got Talent package (@7 yrs), Every Time We Say Goodbye - TV2, I'm Still Holding Out for You (10), Somethings Got a Hold on Me, It's A Mans World, Million Years Ago, The Show Must Go On, and on and on!

I have followed Angelina since her first public performance as a 7 year old. I have come back to this video many times over the years to see new people get their minds blown away by the maturity and exceptional expression of feelings in her voice.
In my opinion this is the best vocal performed by an under 10-years old I have ever seen. Her voice has since matured even more, and she is stepping out in front of us as the voice of the century ❤️

She was only 9 years old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, an American singer/songwriter. He wrote and performed it in 1956 and Angelina based her performance on the original, although she did make some subtle alterations to both lyrics and melody.
As you continue your journey of discovering Angelina, you will come to realise that she does her own arrangements of most of the cover songs she sings. The differences may not be immediately discernible on first listening to them, but they are there. There may be a subtle change in tempo or tone, or more inflexion on some words, or a phrase may differ in pitch from the original. The amount of control that Angelina has over her voice cannot be measured. She never hurries a song. She sings in such a way that the emotions in the lyrics are felt by the listener.
In this video, did you notice:Angelina finishing some notes and handing them to the music director, who smiled as he read them? They were her wishes (instructions) to the band how she wished therm to play the music. Then a brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, a well known and respected Iranian artist, who is also Angelina's maternal grandmother and the person who encouraged Angelina in her love of music, especially jazz. And then there is a shot of Angelina holding a candle, upon which was an image of Screamin' Jay Hawkins. And the fact that during the last time she sang "because you're mine" she rose on to her toes. Lastly, did you notice how the "performing" Angelina, singing at a level of maturity far beyond her years, suddenly became a 9-year-old child almost instantaneously once she finished singing. From the time I first heard Angelina, way back at her first audition on Norway's Got Talent, she has amazed me.

Ann, Angelina's performance was shocking to say the least. And what makes this video even more special is that she has never exactly duplicated this version because of the extreme effort she had to put into it. She has performed the song in public many, many times and the audience goes crazy but this video is on another level.

This is her own arrangement. As for her bare feet, when Angelina was 6 she was travelling with her family in the Middle-East and met a girl of similar age who was weighing people in the street for money. While talking to her she saw that the girl had no shoes so she gave her own boots she was wearing. Afterwards she promised herself never to perform in shoes until all the childrten of the world had shoes. She's now 15 and still keeps the promise. After she won Norway's Got Talent (7/8yrs old) Angelina published a book about the encounter called 'Between Two Hearts' and became the youngest ever Norwegian author (here is an interview where she talks about it herself th-cam.com/video/-cCLDY0CSZ8/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=YozhikvTumane *enable subtitles for English translation). Very impressed with your analysis, great reaction. Angelina is 9 years old here, and the only vocal training she received was at school from her music teacher. Angelina began singing at the age of 1 1/2, and spent all of her free time listening to Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and other Jazz greats. Angelina decides which songs to sing, and arranges them all, handing her “wish list” to the music director at the beginning of the video. After winning Norway’s Got Talent at ages 7-8 (you should watch those videos, the ones with English subtitles) she admits to getting professional voice training. Her grandmother is a famous Iranian artist, and Angelina uses the paintings to design her own clothing, she speaks 4 languages, plays 4 instruments and is truly wise beyond her years. When I listen to her, she makes my heart and soul sing.

It's incredible that this adaptation is all her own and that at that age she was able to evaluate and transform, according to her sensitivity, such a particular and powerful song. hi! i find that about Angelina, it's her story!
9 year 2 month old Angelina created a great arrangement for this 1956 Screamin Jay Hawkins classic then gave a powerful, sassy performance. She is the only vocal prodigy I know of.
Born Angelina Jordan Astar on January 10, 2006 in Oslo, Norway to her Norwegian mother, Sara Astar and her Swedish father, Gerry Christian Slattman, who has chosen to keep his life private.
Angelina started singing around 18 months of age after listening to Whitney Houston on TH-cam. She quickly became obsessed with listening to music videos and her maternal grandmother, Mery Zamani got Angelina interested in classic jazz. Mery Zamani is Iranian and was considered a prodigy as an artist and poet and married a Japanese man who passed away in 2019.
Angelina speaks Norwegian, Farsi, English, Japanese and Swedish.
Angelina attended the Oslo Waldorf School and participated in the Oslo School of Music and Performing Arts after-school program, where she received vocal training starting around age 4. Angelina plays the piano, violin, guitar and flute and also paints. More recently she along with her grandmother have designed and made the clothing she wears on stage.
    Why Angelina always performs barefoot
At age 6, while traveling in the Middle East with her mother and grandmother, Angelina noticed a girl around her age standing on the side of the road asking people to step on her bathroom scale to be weighed in hopes of getting some money. Angelina took off her shoes so as to not get the scale dirty and stepped on the scale many times to make the girl feel better. Angelina befriends the girl who was not wearing shoes and has scars on her feet, and learns she is an orphan. The orphan girl tells Angelina how beautiful she thinks her shoes are. Angelina says her shoes don’t fit her well and she wants to give her shoes to the orphan girl who thanks Angelina for giving her the shoes. Angelina asked the girl what she wanted to be when she grew up and the girl replied, “I want to become a doctor, but that will never happen since I have no parents and I have siblings so I have to do whatever is necessary for us to survive.” Angelina told the girl to never give up on her dreams. The poor girl asked Angelina what she wanted to be when she grew up and Angelina replied that she wanted to sing for the whole world. The poor girl said she would pray every day so Angelina’s dream would come true.
Angelina still says she thinks of that homeless girl every day and has always performed barefoot to remind her of all the children who are less fortunate. At age 9, she became the youngest published author in Norway’s history by writing a book about this encounter in the Middle East.
Angelina at age 6 and 7 did record a few songs in a recording studio, most notably “I Who Have Nothing”, a truly remarkable performance for a 6 or 7 year old.
Angelina is blessed with a deep voice with a beautiful rich tone and has always made her sound much older than her age. Many compare her voice to that of Amy Winehouse. Her voice is highly emotional which is very rare for a young girl and some people can’t accept that such a soulful voice can come from someone who has not had enough life experience. One vocal coach on TH-cam recently said, “If you have a song and want to have more emotion added to that song, have Angelina sing it.”
At age 8, (please refer to replies by erik to a comment I made on JHTreacts video on 6/7/21 who provides proof Angelina had already turned 8) Angelina’s audition on NGT was a cover of Billie Holiday’s “Gloomy Sunday”, a song which was banned by a number of European countries during World War II because authorities worried the song would increase the suicide rate. Truly bizarre that this is the song to launch the career of a child musical prodigy. One of the judges on NGT cried.
The next performance on NGT was her cover of Billie Holiday’s “I’m a Fool to Want You” singing acapella which was required by NGT unless the singer also played an instrument while singing. This was the Judge’s cut round of the competition and was not performed in front of an audience.
In the Semi Final round of NGT, Angelina sang “Bang Bang” which was written by Sonny Bono and was first performed by his wife Cher but is best known sung by Nancy Sinatra. The improvement in each performance is incredible even though there were only a couple months between them.
In the Finals, Angelina did a cover of George Gershwin’s, “Summertime” and won the contest, capturing 46% of the votes from the ten finalists.
Angelina had become a star in her native Norway and her videos on TH-cam went viral. She gave a few concerts during the summer of 2014 while 8 years old.
On June 27, 2018 Jordan performed “Fly Me to the Moon” for Quincy Jones in The O2 Arena in London.
Angelina performed on America’s Got Talent The Champions which aired in January 2020. She earned the Golden Buzzer for her performance of her unique arrangement of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody. She sang her cover of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road in the Finals but didn’t make it into the final 5 contestants. There is much debate over how and why Angelina was eliminated.
Angelina has covered more than 130 songs from 80 different artists, all of which are available on TH-cam. Angelina has always made changes to each song she covers and often her version is preferred over the original. On TH-cam, search on The Complete Works of Angelina Jordan as a fan put all songs in one file and has a complete playlist in the description of that video.
In August 2020, her manager and uncle Michael Astar announced Angelina has signed with Republic Records as their highest priority new artist. On 11/6/20 her first single on Republic Records, Million Miles written by Angelina, was released. She dedicated it to anyone who has lost a loved one. Her 2nd single, 7th Heaven is a jazzy, upbeat, inspirational song and was also written by Angelina. Angelina’s family requested Republic Records to allow her to have as normal a childhood as possible. This is why Republic Records has not promoted her first two singles.
Angelina Jordan is a humble, compassionate young lady of very few words when she is not singing. She is on videos saying she wants to sing for the entire world and also that she wants to improve the quality of life for all the children on Earth. She has helped to raise millions of dollars for children’s charities and environmental causes.
Musicians who have worked with her have been quoted saying Angelina is among the most talented musicians they have worked with and she is the boss in the room when rehearsing. Remarkable for a girl of few words when not singing. For Angelina, it is all about the music and not her.
Personally, I find Angelina’s voice the most soulful and emotional voice of my lifetime. Angelina as a person, inspires me to be a better person and live longer to listen to her sing for as long as I can.

    - The Barefoot Princess -
(From her book, television and radio interviews, and podcasts made between 2014-2015. Includes excerpts from her diary made that day in 2012.)
Why does Angelina sing barefooted? Angelina Jordan is known as "The Barefoot Princess" or "The Barefoot Princess of Jazz," amongst many other names. She always performs barefooted, whether in front of a live audience or during a studio performance. The story is that while living in the Middle East, at 6 years old, Angelina came across an orphaned girl, of her own age, sitting in the street, weighing people on a bathroom scale to earn money. Angelina said to herself, "I would like to share her life for one second to know what it is like to sit alone, wet, and damp, and barefoot in a corner of the street." Angelina could see the girl's bare feet were scarred and that it was cold outside, so she offered her own shoes to the girl. Little Angelina says that she really loved her shoes, as they were very nice and she knew she would miss them. But she saw the other little girl’s need for them, which outweighed her own desire to keep them. So she insisted the little girl take them.
Angelina called her Princess, even though the girl said she didn't live in a castle, but the ruins of a building next to where she sat. After sharing their hopes and dreams, the little girl said of Angelina's wish to sing for the world, "You will become the one you dream of and when your dreams come true, you have to remember the poor children without shoes; and I will pray for you Angelina.” Later that day, 6 y/o Angelina wrote in her diary, "The world is very strange. Right then and there, I felt as if a door in my heart opened up, and it was filled with lots of lights. It was as if there was, from Earth to Heaven, a staircase. I climbed the stairs. To be able to do something for another human - it was such a big thing…hard to describe really.”
From that point on, Angelina takes off her shoes, in honor of ‘Princess’ and all the other less fortunate children of the world, who are orphaned, hungry, or in want of even basic clothing. In 2015, at the age of 9, Angelina wrote a book about the encounter, as everyone continued to ask why she sang barefoot. Her grandmother, Mery Zamani, created the artwork for the book. So at 9, Angelina Jordan became the youngest published author in Norway. Angelina has performed alongside many other artists, raising attention and helping to raise over 21 million euros and millions of dollars for children in need.

Yes, this has become a classic on its own. Here, Angelina, at 9 yrs 2 mos old, has captured the essence of the original song by Screamin' Jay Hawkins in 1956 in her arrangement. In the intro (which you bypassed) you can see her writing out and passing last-minute changes to the arrangement to a member of the band. They may have gone in that day and been taken aback by playing for a nine-year-old, but by the end of the day they were calling her, "The Boss." After auditioning for Norway's Got Talent at seven and winning it at eight, she was literally a professional by age 9! Now, at fifteen, she has written 5 songs, sung two written for her, and covered about 135 other songs of 70 different artists. She is signed to Republic Records. She is the real deal.
She has always performed barefoot since she was 6 years old after meeting a young girl in the mid-east who had no shoes. Angelina gave her her own shoes and promised to always perform without shoes until all the children in the world had shoes. This is a touching and telling story that Angelina penned in her diary that day and became the basis for Angelina's book, Heart to Heart, which she published at 9 years old, and became the youngest published author in Norway. New subscriber (USA) - thanks to your reaction to another Angelina Jordan masterful performance. Here - at age 9 - is after she had won Norways Got Talent at age 8. Looking forward to more of your Angelina reactions. Recommend you go back to all 4 of her NGT performances, then her Fly Me To The Moon performance on The View (age 8), also either or both her indoor or outdoor performance of Feeling Good (age 10) & (also at 10) her unbelievable performance of I'm Still Holding Out For You. Thank you. And may GOD continue to watch over & bless Angelina Jordan. ... Then - for your 2nd week ... JK :)

The first known video of her singing into a microphone was at the ripe old age of 18 months. She started vocal training at around age 5. I'd recommend you watch Julia Nilon's reaction (she is an Australian vocal coach with a PhD in child vocal development) to this performance where she explains how she is able to get such low notes at such a young age.

Very observant of you in recognizing the signs of voice training in Angelina'a singing. Not many have noticed that. There are many more excellent Angelina videos that you could react to. You have reacted to two that went viral. I think you would really enjoy the first of her videos that went viral. This would be her audition at age 7 on Norway's Got Talent. She sang "Gloomy Sunday" in the style of Billie Holiday for this audition. Turn on English subtitles and watch this video in its entirety. Even the judges' comments are entertaining. Be warned that if "cute" can kill, you may not survive this one.

Angelina is known as 'The Boss' by all the musicians she works with as she arranges all of the songs she sings, whether they are her own or those by other singers she is covering. She's been doing this since she won Norway's Got Talent at the age of 7. There are videos of her singing along, with a mic, to Whitney Houston at the age of 18 months and another of her, again in the studio, singing Shirley Bassey's 'I who have nothing' at the age of 6. Well worth a look.

  • @johnvasi
    @johnvasi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +43

There’s a good reason why she’s called the girl with a thousand voices. Her voice and her delivery of many different styles and genres has only improved in the six years since this video. Angelina is, simply, the best singer I’ve ever heard. That’s hard to accept because she’s been under the radar-held close by her family to try to keep her childhood as normal as possible, but that’s pretty difficult when you are so incredibly talented. And Angelina, you’ll see, loves to sing. There are so many great songs, but if you want to see the essence of Angelina today, try her just released cover of Billie Jean. She does all her own arrangements, turning classic songs on their head and giving us beautiful performances we never expect. You seem to like jazz-Billie Jean will show you Angelina right now at 15, and I think you’ll realize why so many of us believe she is a once in a lifetime talent.

The best part is we, most of her fans, are so incredibly supportive of the fact that her parents are ensuring she gets to maintain her childhood while allowing us to peer into her amazing talent. This CAN and should be done in the most healthy way for Ang. This way we get so much more of her for so many more years. She is a sweet soul that deserves the best and that includes a proper safe childhood.

Thank you for your great second reaction to Angelina. You only have about 140 to go! Please consider reacting to her performance of “Every Time We Say Goodbye” from in 2016 when she was 10-years old. She sings it in the style of Ella Fitzgerald from her 1956 classic on the album “Ella Fitzgerald Sings The Cole Porter Songbook”. Angelina and guitarist Tommy Kristiansen were on the rooftop of TV 2 in Oslo, performing on the TV show “God Sommer Norge” (Good Summer Norway). Both the audio and video quality are amazing. The purity of Angelina’s voice is astounding! Here is the translation of the hosts’ comments at the beginning - Man: “Angelina Jordan is standing behind us. This ten year old has got the whole world at her feet. Luckily, she stopped by with us before she goes off to the USA.” Woman: “And we are expecting to get goosebumps because we have listened to the rehearsals. So, just enjoy it and enjoy this Monday evening too.” Man: “Have a good one.” Here’s the link: th-cam.com/video/KRSI8HmTHJA/w-d-xo.html

    Hi Ann,
thanks a billion for your second reaction to Angelina Jordan. It was a pleasure to listen to your professional, profund comments to her singing, her style and technics - rarely reactioneers mention her fantastic pitch even when growling or belting...
I think she listened - or most likely studied - all the artists you mentioned when describing her voice ;-)
I listened attentively to you, if you ask for something, I haven't answered already... but all the answers to your questions are in my comment to your first reaction video to Angelina Jordan ;)))
So I can only add: I'm looking forward to your next reaction to Angelina Jordan :-D
    Stay well and healthy
    Andreas
Oh - and a little plea: It would help Angelina - and I think you would like to help her - if you put the link to her video you reacted to and may be also to her web-site, YT channels,... in the description. Some other reactors even ask the people to watch the original video too and like it too for to support Angelina - you know: Because of the algorythm... ;-))

Such a great way of expressing an old soul, “she knows exactly what she came here to do!” I realized when you said it that it’s for sure something that I think sets old souls apart. They seem so composed and advanced for their age and so certain about their purpose. I saw the same things in Jackie Evancho when she first appeared on America’s Got Talent. Her voice was so mature sounding that all kinds of people called in to the program accusing her of lip synching.

From what I read her grandmother gave her her love of jazz, she started binge listening to it at around 2 or 3 and started singing lessons at 4. There are hundreds of videos of her on her 2 channels and other channels on youtube, but if you like her jazzy style and wish to see her evolution, maybe start by her performances of Norway got talent , there are some videos of that with english subtitles then go up in age from there ?
In any case no mater what you choose to listen from her will be great.

There are few coincidences with Angelina. She is quite involoved with all aspects of her musical journey. There are no musical people in her family. She has wanted to sing for the whole world since age 5 or before. She listens to all the jazz great sand can invoke them when desired. You are two songs into a growing musical legend!
It is truly a conundrum when we try to rationalize how it is possible that this tiny sweet-faced 9yo Norwegian girl can step up to a microphone, flip some switch within her, become this "beast-mode" version of herself (most probably named "AJ don't play"), deliver an extraordinary and musically and socially sophisticated performance, then just-like-that return to the pensive young lady once again... There aren't words for this!
As you know, "I Put a Spell On You" has been covered many times and is recognized as a classic, yet almost never is the tone of the original 1956 "Screamin" Jay Hawkins version captured. This is because Hawkins was the original shock rock guy (think Ozzy Osbourne type craziness) and his style is difficult to emulate and also because his dated delivery is uncomfortable and stereotypical to our modern sensibilities. Yet Angelina respectfully sings his own song in a manner that exceeds his (Hawkin's image is on the candle she holds at the start of her video).
Go and again listen to Hawkins' original (and throw in a couple of "famous" covers as well) to see the true genius in how AJ incorporates many of his vocal elements [usually omitted by most singers]. This shows another aspect of her musical IQ and arranging genius (not to mention her masterful control of her vocal instrument equaled by few others regardless of age). Love the reaction, Ann! I see others have given you a lot of information about Angelina. One thing that you will discover if you continue to watch Angelina videos is her absolutely astounding versatility. Her first love is jazz. In an interview with American Songwriter Magazine (yes she also writes songs), she is quoted as saying, “I have to say if it wasn’t for the unconditional love that came from Billie Holiday’s legendary music, there would not be Angelina Jordan today. I am very blessed today that her music found me very early.”
Aside from jazz, she also sings blues, R&B, pop, rock, country, gospel, classical and even EDM and does a beautiful job with them all. And she is fearless! She doesn't shy away from covering legendary singers and, in fact, I think she loves to challenger herself by doing so.
Others have suggested you react to her Norway's Got Talent performances and I agree with them, but before you do that, you may want to see what came before that. Her recording of "I Who Have Nothing" in the studio at her school when she was SIX years old would be a good place to start: th-cam.com/video/RjQZKBpVaes/w-d-xo.html
After the song, she has a short conversation with the technician in Norwegian. There are English subtitles if you turn them on.

I'm sure Angelina has good people around her. I think everyone on her team including the record company (Republic Records), slows down a bit with marketing her. She is so good anyway, so she can not be ignored. She delivers music that lasts, and not music that lasts for a few weeks as plastic hit. Angelina has over 600 Million Views on TH-cam and over 2 Billion Views on Facebook overall on her videos. Angelina won Norway's Got Talent at the Age of 8, and has been producing masterclass level vocals ever since. The only and regular marketing is done by the fans via TH-cam. All the important top personalities in the western music industry know who she is and what she can do. In just a few years I know that we will see great things from Angelina.
If you need to identify who she sound like, I can tell you that she has 1000 different voices to choose from, depending on the song choice and type .. It's Angelina.

Hi Ann, thanks for that great reaction & your nice little breakdown of Angie We love it when reactors go nerdy about Angie. On “I put a spell on you”
Angie said it in an interview a year later (when she was around 10 at interview) about this song: “It means love Desperate love. It's very special, it's almost voodoo The original is very nice, and when I scream it is a desperate cry that everyone should love each other.”
Angelina gives a short little interview when she was 9) explaining why she performs barefoot & about the book she wrote. Angelina Jordan interviewed by Anne Lindmo, NRK TV “Lindmo” 14/11/2015 (eng & esp sub) th-cam.com/video/-cCLDY0CSZ8/w-d-xo.html during interview she is ask to sing. (Please do a reaction to this very touching story & also part 2 below is her singing) together their about 6 min.
Part 2 Angie sings “Unchained Melody” by the Righteous Brothers at (9) th-cam.com/video/wGjqXxQbFgA/w-d-xo.html this is also a nice video to react to as a double reaction
“You Make Me Feel So Young” cover by Frank Sinatra th-cam.com/video/MQN3ecsutLs/w-d-xo.html She’s 13. She did her hair & clothes in the era of the song. She's singing this in a type of duet style, this will really blow your mind. Her range in this song gets down into her lower register into the 2nd octave around a G2-A2.
She chooses all her own songs & does all her own arrangements ever since she was very young, even when she did Screaming Jay Hawkins “I put a spell on you” at barely 9, even at 7 & 8 on NGT (Norway’s Got Talent). Remember, Angie never sings a song the same way twice, so you could say they’ll all be 1st time reactions.

She has had some training in Norway this is her passion since she was a little girl. She knows these songs because her grandmother would play them for her when she was a toddler. Keep doing reactions to her and your subscribers will continue to sore. I've watched some go over 200k just from reating to Angelina s covers.

For me this is The Greatest Performance Ever, by the Greatest of All Time.
I mean their is nothing to compare it too.
I would suggest all 4 songs, in order, on Norway's Got Talent 2014 at 7 and 8 years old.
With captions, as the comments are great.
Gloomy Sunday, I'm a Fool to Want You, Bang Bang and Summertime.
Some reactors have done all 4 in 1 reaction. Which is great for seeing how she improves each time.
