    I just watched a fuller clip of Sutton Foster singing Shy and thought the exact same thing. And the original production with Carol Burnett came to Broadway in 1959. She repeated it for TV in 1964, which I just watched here on TH-cam.

      Does the clip show more of the performance?

    • @riverebec1
      @riverebec1 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CareOffBook Yes, although not the complete song. There is a clip of the entire performance but it's audio only. She was in the middle of rehearsals for Sweeny Todd at the time which might explain why her voice didn't sound as it has in the past.

      @@riverebec1 ok. I’m definitely to see if they’ll put out a full video and then I’ll react to it.

    I saw her in that show last night I enjoyed her and the entire cast, I went in blind not knowing anything about this musical. I loved how they performed this story on stage, I’m excited I got to see Sutton on stage finally. Also with that production it’s an ENCORES show at New York City Center which means they bring back shows for a very limited run which is two weeks, and im sure the budget isn’t so big for a short run.

      Even though I’m disappointed by the small snippet I’d still want to see it because I’m a fan. ALSO! How was Cheyenne Jackson as Sir Harry? I’d swoon.

    I think what seems off to me is that she's telegraphing the punchline too early, and that could be something she or the director (maybe even both) is responsible for. Just the way it's presented in the intro, I can feel what's coming, and I think the whiplash is what makes something like this so effective. And you can also kind of read it on her face. Then when she goes into it more, it doesn't feel like it's flowing naturally, or having a sense of obliviousness, which is also key. She feels like she could, and probably should, be doing more, but something is holding her back.

      Yes, you've really hit the nail on the head! I realize I often emphasize the importance of sincerity in a performance, and this is a great example. If there's a full release of Sutton Foster's 'Shy' performance, I'm excited to do a reaction video. It'll be interesting to see how her physical comedy plays into the overall delivery. I'm a big fan of Sutton Foster, though I find her vocal style in this piece somewhat jarring. It's a unique blend that definitely warrants a closer look!

      @PerformancePerspective Absolutely, I'm a big fan as well, and maybe will the full context of how its presented, it could land really well! You're not alone in it seeming a bit off though, I totally get what you mean.

      @@thegreatpretender1026 I checked out your page and was really impressed by your covers - your comedic timing is spot on, and that's something I believe you can't just teach. If you're passionate about it, why not expand your channel to include discussions on scenes, monologues, and performances that resonate with you, or even those that don't? Share your 'why' behind these opinions. It's similar to what I do, but you seem to have a knack for quick, on-the-spot analysis, whereas I tend to take a bit more time to process and try to articulate my thoughts from an artistic perspective.

    I saw SJP in the role when I was 7 years old on Bway and thus that (along with Carole) was always the gold standard for me. So yeah, gotta agree, Sutton ain't doing it for me.

      SJP was looked down on for that role, most likely when comparing her with Carol, but I sincerely enjoyed her portrayal and took inspiration from it.
