Great video! I've always been fascinated by the Wild Hunt and how many variations there are. I'm glad you included the Ghost Riders of the United States. I've always considered them to be a variation on the Wild Hunt
Knowing that Tolkien loved using old folklore and mythologies for his own stories, is it possible that the Nazgul were somewhat inspired by the Wild Hunt? Considering that they also "hunted the damned", the false bearers of the One Ring.
@@ambarrose I didn't either until Sigurd was mentioned. Then I remembered that 2 of Sigurd's most famous legends are the basis for two Tolkien stories. The Defeat of Fafnir and his Cursed Ring tragedy.
Fantastic ❤ there are stories of spirits traveling in the sky. They are found in the Middle East with stories of Djinn caravans and in Japan the Parade of the Yokai. The wild hunt or the wild ride or March of the Faery folk is universal.
The fact was that everyone talked about it but few went out or to the window to check. 😂 Not that I blame them, perhaps I would have done the same. The Wild Hunt always makes me curious whenever I hear about it. You have explored the theme as well as always.😊 Thank you for your great work.
Always such a show. I really love these. I’ve been showing some to the kids, hoping they develop a love of history and folklore like I did when my mum and oldest sister told me these stories.
@@MatthewSchooley94There still some good things on Shark Week. I thought the one that pit the great white against the Megalodon was pretty good, but to each his own.
I think I've heard of them from The Ancient Magus' Bride. A mortal boy befriends one of them, not knowing he's going joining him and his horsemen to the netherworld.
The wild hunt remind me of Ring Wraths from Lord of the Rings. Maybe Tolkien was inspired by these figures. Also not gonna lie I thought the Wild Hunt was to bring judgement based on how they come in droves like a army.
This oddly reminds me of Hyakkiyakou (百鬼夜行), a Japanese myth of parades in the night held by all manners or apparitions and yokai up to a hundred strong. Obviously, things don't usually go to well for humans who get caught up in it.
The wild hunt also has to do with the Perchten. Pre-Christian alpine traditions. They come with their masks In wintertime. ( Austria , bavaria, Switzerland) Old tradition
Before Witcher, the Wild Hunt will always be immortalized in the Merry Gentry series by Laurell K Hamilton. Ive read all 9 more than once. Best fantasy/fantasy smut series if you love mythology/folklore/supernatural

What a great episode! The Wild Hunt is one of the most fascinating of all the worlds myths.

Absolutely!
That's a great idea actually. I had never seen that possibility.

There is also a brief scene in The Hobbit where the company hear a far off hunt with accompanying hounds while traveling through Mirkwood!
Almost certainly

It's also inspired a song,Ghost Riders in the Sky,and a book by Jill Tattersall, titled The Wild Hunt.
A favorite read iny youth.
I think you should do a video on shark mythology in honor of Shark Week.
Would probably be better than anything they show on Shark Week these days
Heck yes! That would be awesome!!

Very interesting😮

There was a version of the parade in pom poko, I think?
Reminds of the movie Spirited Away which obviously takes elements of Japanese mythology
I loved this video.
Can do the Grootslang next?🐍🐘
