  • Skip to 06:00 for the Topaz Labs demo. #Midjourney is great for creating images, but they're not big enough to print, by using a second machine learning system, Topaz Labs' Gigapixel AI we can smartly scale them up, while the AI fills in the gaps.

    300dpi over a 1m is great!
    I'm so intrigued by how the art industry will gradually shift towards becoming better at utilizing the AIs the create something intended than actually drawing oneself. Many complain about losing jobs, but I think it'll rather be a new evolution of how artists work in the future. Essentially an explosion of expressions and efficiency.

    • @revdancatt
      @revdancatt  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah, I think there'll still be lots of room for "traditional" artists, and a whole generation who have always worked _with_ AI, which is going to be fun to watch.

    Topaz and other AI Upscalers are doing a LOT of magic, but for those who are "stuck" with Photoshop or Affinity I got also a little workaround:
    1. Set a new Project with the desired format, insert the image and scale it up according to the document borders
    2. Convert the image to a "Smart Object", apply a "Camera Raw Filter" and set the "Structure" Parameter to something between 30% - 60%
    3. Duplicate the Processed Layer and set the upper Layer to "Overlay", apply a "High Pass Filter" and set it to something between 3 and 6
    A little Reminder: This will NOT replace any kind of AI Upscale Magic, and it will work better for BW and Monochromatic images. Sometimes it will be enough, many times it needs further tweaking. Another Option is to do a final retouch by adding the 2 Layers to another Smart Object and repeating steps 2 and 3, sometimes adding an "Unsharp Mask" will also reveal more detail.

    • @revdancatt
      @revdancatt  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey hey, I have a couple of tips. The first is to order sample packs. For example Spoonflower is here: www.spoonflower.com/en/sample-pack
      I use Contrado here in the UK: www.contrado.co.uk/fabric-swatch-pack
      That's probably the best way to get an idea of how different fabrics hold the colour. Sometimes you need to punch up the colour a bit on your designs for example. I would honestly do that before anything else.
      The other is to try and get high resolution, but this video covers that.
      The last is, for printing onto t-shirts/fabric have a look for places that do dye sublimation printing. This is a good way of "printing" designs onto fabric that won't fade in the wash.
      Hope this helps.

    I tried the Gigapixel demo (which leaves a watermark all over everything so you aren't fully able to evaluate it). For my use though, which is mainly preparing old historical photos for publication, I would have to say no, that it doesn't seem very good. It takes too many freedoms and simply leaves what it doesn't understand alone so that some parts of the image no longer blends naturally with the rest. The result had a phony look. But for a Midjourney image which is fantasy to begin with I'm sure it would work a lot better, yes.
    As for enlarging with Photoshop, there are settings apart from automatic that might take you further. Also there is Lightrooms "Super resolution" enhance which is still not great but better for my kind of use where you have a real photo and don't want it ending up looking fake.
    Nice video, your enthusiasm is infectious!

Where does one find archival paper or archival ink? I think many digital artists who didnt go to design school like me missed out on production techniques such as paper choice and working with printers.

    Any tips on colour management when printing from Midjourney images? Are they generated in srgb? Should we assign a profile? Does it make a difference when printing (inkjet) using Adobe RGB or SRGB? Thanks for the video.

    Great video.. midjourney user here.. bought and tried topaz gigapixel yesterday.. you are great at explaining all of the pixel information and how gigapixel upscales.. my question is this.. how to get gigapixel to save a png image at 300ppi for acceptance from clip art companies that require high res 300 ppi or dpi images .. my gigapixel saves at 96.. my only solution was to send to ps and upscale there, but will I lose sharpness and clarity? Thanks for any help.

    Loved this video. I bought the software but I don't know how to upscale the images to 300 dpi. I upscaled my artwork 6x in Art/CG and it came out awesome but only 72 dpi. What am I doing wrong?

    • @revdancatt
      @revdancatt  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Sorry about the late reply, I need to make a follow up video. As long as you're 6x the image then it doesn't matter what it says the dpi is, the only thing that matters is how many pixels you now have. 72dpi is a hangover from when monitors had about 72 pixels per inch. So images created digitally (and assumed to be for screen) where assigned the metadata of 72dpi, while things created in photoshop where often assigned 300dpi, even though they were the same size.
      What's happening here is your original image is "72dpi" so the scaled up one is still "72dpi", even though it has more pixels. Just take the number of pixels it has across and divide by 300 that's your dpi. So if you now have a 6,480 pixel wide image, you can now print that happily at 6,480 / 300 inches = 21.6 inches. In theory it would display on OLD monitors at 6,480/72dpi = 90 inches!!! Lol. Hope that kinda makes sense, ignore what dpi it tells you, just use the pixel and divide by 300.

      I use The Print Space: www.theprintspace.com/

    Thank you so much for this! I have a couple of questions if that's ok. Before I even put in a prompt, I've got my MJ default settings set to 'High Quality' and 'Regular Upscale' - are these the best defaults to generate images ready to print, or should I be choosing light upscale or beta upscale? The image styles I usually work with are 3d hyper real photography style. My second question is, if I want to make alterations to the image in photoshop, do you recommend making the edits on the PNG before upscaling, or on the JPEG after upscaling? Thank you! :)

    • @revdancatt
      @revdancatt  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The HQ and Regular upscale should do you fine, Topaz will be doing most of the work.
      For alterations, for things like removing spots or small cleaning up I'd use the Spot Healing Brush in Content-Aware mode on the PNG _before_ scaling up.
      If they're fairly big alterations, then I'd scale up first and page them on the JPEG. Hope this helps

    • @maddiem5921
      @maddiem5921 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@revdancatt that is so helpful, thank you! My edits are mostly things like evening out the background to fix unwanted vignetting. I was worried that upscaling and converting to a jpeg, editing, then saving it again as a jpeg might risk over-compressing the file. Do you think it's pretty safe as long as it's just one round of edits? Thanks for your video covering this subject by the way, there seem to be surprisingly few tutorials on preparing MJ images for good quality prints, much less ones that are really clear.

    • @revdancatt
      @revdancatt  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@maddiem5921 If you're in photoshop I'd just save out as a PNG each time wherever I could.
      The images created by Midjourney are PNGs, and Topaz exports the scaled up version as a PNG too. So you should be able to do all your edits as PNGs, and only drop down to jpg at the end if needed.

  • @polystormstudio

    Not sure if this was mentioned because I didn't watch all the way through, but I've been using Gigapixels since it first came out. It's great and supposedly the best upscaler out there. But for photography there are limitations, the higher the resolution you go, the more fake it looks. It still looks clean and noise free but you're not going to get a 30x40" print and think "wow, that looks flawless". Maybe one day but not today.

    the deal breaker for me is that both programs are subcription based. I have a midjourney sub right now, probably wouldn't take on another one until I get rid of this one, unless I was working for a bigger company (in which case, at least with MJ, I'd be stuck paying a bigger fee anyway). It's awesome to see these tools but I don't see them actually changing anything in the culture (besides reducing the payout for artists) until competitive open source options appear. Thanks for sharing this info!

  • @irridiastarfire
    @irridiastarfire ปีที่แล้ว

    I find the low-resolution Topaz model better for upscaling Midjourney, although I'm still using version 5.8 because it works better for what I do. The Art & CG model tends to keep more variation in almost flat areas but it makes edges wider (eg. blue skies keep more detail in the blue, but the edge of a tree and the leaves lose fine detail). Obviously different models work better for different images... 4x scaling seems to be the sweet spot for me, which gives 8.2k x 4.6k ~= 38MP images

    • @revdancatt
      @revdancatt  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah that's good to know. I know the 6x is too much for what I'm printing. Midjourney keeps getting closer and closer to outputting a decent resolution to print at anyway, which is pretty amazing.

    Hi, I made art with midjourney AI, and then used vanceAI to upscale it to 8x, but now I have 8192x8192 photo with only 72 DPI.. the file size is around 60mb. if I use Clideo software to supposedly increase my dpi to 300, the file size is like 5mb.. So I don't think it actually makes it any better, because I assume with better quality the size is bigger. Is Topaz able to fix this problem for me or are there any other issues that I already made coming this far? What do you recommend I do? I wanna be able to sell good quality print on demand products. Thank you
