Wow - an absolute breath of fresh air listening to a musician speak with such clarity and empathy. I stumbled across the beautiful Superbloom video and then onto this - think I’ve found my new favourite band? Music absolutely needs to be in dialogue with the culture surrounding it. Being ‘apolitical’ is a political stance of apathy. Thanks for speaking up ❤
The amount of quotable things that Garrett says is unfathomable. Basically every second sentence is something that could be put on billboards throughout any city.
Was very interested in this one. Love the phrasing and lyrics "were only tyrants until love overcomes" is so true. A message that needs to be heard today ("the death of my pride is the cost of peace" also too). Anhedonia too. Both previously The System and Visible Empire if I recall. Am very interested in Translate the Night too though. Then again though, the whole album intrigues me \m/
Warning Unsolicited Optimism: You never know, even some of the top artists get commission and inspiration from admirers and unknown lyricists and poets.
I think the best thing about music, is regardless of the topic, if it’s good music, it’s good music. Can’t say I necessarily agree with with everything about the song, but at the end of the day it provokes thoughts on both sides. And it’s generally just good music so who cares if you don’t agree.
I love how well spoken and thoughtful Garrett is, I also love how he plays devils advocate to just saying fuck this country I hate it, you can tell he’s go a lot of love in his heart but also keeps an aware and insightful eye to the world around him and is great with translating that into music, never was the biggest fan of silent planet, loved panic room and of course superbloom and iridescent as whole albums, but I definitely love Garrett and how thinks and speaks, always been one of my favorite frontmen in the metalcore realm
Thank you for sharing your thoughts Garrett! I love your perspective, and that your songs and lyrics have rich meaning and honesty. Keep on creating, God bless!
Slight rant... Man. This is deep. Many wont understand. And sadly many will. Just because i dont understand another man's issues, doesnt mean i cant have compassion. I pray political idolatry ends especially in the American Church, which i havent attended in seven years. Christ's love changed me. Taught me to show compassion and love. That was long... but much love to all yall out there.
James 3:10-12 ESV: "From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water".
We see the world through our belief systems that we receive from a young age through society, schooling and family. its up to us to let go of beliefs that don't belong to us.
The system is very much broken, if people would spend half the time they spend bickering and playing the blame game on actually trying to bring about positive change, things would start improving instantly
Last time you said how much you liked the ideas of The Matrix, and now you're talking up Cornell West? Damn now I really want to kick it with you. 😄 Side note: if you haven't watched the bonus disc in The Matrix box set where they go over the philosophy of the movies, please do it. Cornell West is in there, as are many other modern philosophers.
Homie mentioned two of my favorite people rn just causally. Cornel West is an amazing writer and philosopher and probably the greatest presidential runner ever. Then BELL HOOKS DUDE! I just finished her book, « the will to change » and wow it rocked my world and it got me to think about stuff like I haven’t before which is what a book should do. As an addendum, lemme just say: « I don’t give a damn which administration » is such a hard quote and very bell hooks. This song is so dynamic and this might be my favorite track-by-track! Thank you so much Jared, Gart, and the rest of sp (and System of a Down) for this awesome song and video!!
Very concise thought process, with understandable sources...but what 2020 and on was to me, was an outcry of people who had been invalidated their whole lives, that they were grasping on to something to feel validated, and latched to a calling that their friends or social groups were clinging to. This is not to water down anything that took place, but I think what that did was cause a weird revolution where people are seeking a utopian life, but in reality...that just isn't going to happen. What will happen, is we will receive a more oppressive life than the one we are trying to be freed from.
Both sides of the administration are at their roots the same. This song goes hard and it’s hilarious that people get stuck on SP dropping a fuck in a track.
I may fundamentally disagree with most of garrets social commentary but that’s the beauty of this country is that one day maybe, I could have a dialogue with garret about ways we could better our society without potential for persecution for our beliefs
i agree. i never agreed with most of his social/political opinions. But i love that he voices his opinion differently from many artists and i always want to hear how the other side is feeling and perceiving things in our culture. SP is one of my favorite bands because of their lyrical writings and banger songs
Writes the lyrics but defers to others to have a conversation about the content of the song. How can the song have a cobversation with culture in that case?
"'Well Trump didn't do this, Obama did this' and people just shifting the blame instead of being like 'children don't belong in fucking cages'" It's legitimately baffling that whenever people criticize aspects of the current administration, others seem to think that saying that the previous administration was also guilty of the same problems is a huge gotcha moment. Like, why the fuck do you just automatically assume that because I criticize one person for their injustices, that means I must suddenly be ok with it if the person before them also did similarly injust things but have slightly different political views and isn't white? Incredibly well spoken Garrett. This is the first of these breakdowns I've watched and this one intrigued me in particular. At first I just expected the usual "oh no how dare the 'Christian' band use a no-no word" but this was so much more than that.
Probably haha, I was reading through some of the comments on Instagram and some people were mentioning the “woke” mentality and how politics shouldn’t be in music. Other people were saying stuff like “I remember when you were Christian.”
@@lc81002 Yeah, we're called to love others. Kinda breaks my heart seeing Christians up in arms when it is treating others as humans. It's hard though since we all have our flaws (not saying that excuses them though)
People should leave them alone anyways, they’re not a Christian band and anyone who knows anything about theology would likely place Garrett as closer to a universalist than Christian lol. Great dude though.
Yeah, because I remember reading when Jesus was talking about the Roman government and talking about the broken system and saying "Fuck the Roman system." I remember Jesus being a political activist, sticking to Caesar and the Roman authorities and making his ministry about politics and focusing on the legislation of the Romans at the time. Yup, I totally remember when Jesus said that the broken system is a reflection of our broken nature. I remember when Jesus was talking about how abusive and violent the Roman soldiers were and how they murdered non-Roman citizens. If you agree with Garrett, then you've missed the point of Jesus ministry and mission. You've missed the point of being a Christian.
Thank God someone in the metal community is talking about This. I don't understand Racism and especially Police mistreating the black community. Like The All Lives matter thing is so stupid because thats not what Black Lives is about. it's a distraction from the real issues. Everyone is beautiful and to hate people or judge them because they have a different skin color is dangerous. We need to unite and not divide. I always feel like a dick getting on to my friends to stop with these stupid jokes that are derogatory not only to black but any race. I have had similar situations (not as bad as what the black community has to deal with") where I have been beaten and harassed by police and constantly pulled over by the same cop because I'am a musician and dress different. We need more Love. That's the answer . Great Video! Please don't start any arguments under my comment.
Anyone who gets upset that their MUSIC is political is an alien nut. Of all the things you can do with your music, why would you not talk about society.
To talk about the US. We elected a president with dementia. Our economy is on the verge of collapse. Housing is becoming unaffordable. Lawlessness is rampant and enforcement of the law is walking a tightrope. Violent persons are considered guilty or innocent based on race. Look at the tensions unchecked immigration is causing in Chicago. With all these problems, are people trying to come here or leave here?
Silent Planet “fans” tone policing their most politically and socially charged song will never not be hilarious to me. Get a job challenge: impossible.
@@xSmittyxCorex I don't think that anything justifies violent rioting and looting which put my wife and other family members in direct harm during that time.
