  • Join Nolly and Rabea in part 1 of our in-depth video series in which they demonstrate our Studio Cabs: Cali Oversized plugin, talking guitar tone and giving background information as they go.
    -------------------------------------------------
GGD Studio Cabs: Cali Oversized is available now! Get it here: ggd.news/StudioCabsCali
    -------------------------------------------------
Studio Cabs: Cali Oversized Edition is the second in our Studio Cabs series, and is a deep dive into what is potentially the most famous recording 4x12 of our time, renowned for its amazing smoothness, rich midrange and tight low end under the microphone. These attributes make it particularly suited to overdriven and high gain tones where they sound simply huge and pretty much mix-ready.
Capturing the tones for this was a labor of love for us - we’ve been obsessed with the sounds these cabs make for decades, but when Nolly started working as a producer he quickly found that not all of them have “the sound”. It turns out to get that iconic tone you need to track down golden examples from the 90s and early 2000s, so that’s what he did, amassing well over a dozen from that time period and auditioning countless individual speakers on top of that.
We chose only the 6 very best sounding speakers from his collection to capture for this plugin. Each was captured with 8 microphone options: 57, both vintage and modern 421 variants, two ribbons, two condensers and also an authentically-captured dual 57 Fredman array.
For all except the latter you can sweep the mic position across the sweet spot of each speaker using the Dark to Bright knob. The usable range for each microphone was carefully defined with each speaker separately, meaning that you can’t go wrong anywhere on the dial. Just adjust to preference. The plugin also has an intuitive Master EQ switch that subtly filters, sweetens and adds clarity, if you feel you need to add a touch of polish.
We’ve kept the popular .wav export function from our Zilla cabinet edition if you want to export you favourite IR blends to use with other devices, and you can load 3rd party IRs within the plugin too, though we hope you find everything you need within the cabinets we’ve captured.
We’re extremely proud of this plugin, and frankly wish we’d had it at our disposal many years ago - it would have saved a lot of time and heartache chasing the perfect guitar tone. We really hope it gives you as much enjoyment as we had making it.

Man, every time I see Rabea involved in the Nolly Software Universe it just makes me so goddamn happy. It's like watching your favorite athlete get drafted at the top of the class and then crush it on the main stage. That dude made huge impressions on my life, both with music and even with the health-related stuff he put out there in mid 2017 and I cannot accurately explain how wildly hyped I am both for this video and for the absolute shine that's been placed on Rabea. Bless everything about this lol

Nolly seems SO proud of what he's accomplished here. And he should be. He has immortalized something that would have otherwise been lost in the passage of time. All speakers have a finite amount of usage before they're essentially dead. I can't wait to get my hands on this new plug-in. I think it's going to be a game changer.

Unbelievable video. The dude literally traded mesa cabs by the serial number and then made several jaw dropping tones.
I got epic Nostalgia as I will never forget working my ass off an entire summer to get my mesa stack. Hitting that first drop D cord cranked gave me a smile I will never forget.
On a technical note, I own some ownhammer stuff and it's killer, but annoying to work with as its just a million file names that are hard to really experiment with. This is like the modern day guitarists version of drum trigger by slate. Absolutely brilliant.
    Thank you Nolly!!!!

A digital plugin comes out capturing all the best tones of a specific cabinet in some of the most popular tonal ranges in metal; everyone all of a sudden loves digital IRs.
A digital plugin comes out capturing all the best tones of a specific cabinet in some of the most popular tonal ranges in metal; prices shoot up massively of the original, real cabinets.
What a world we live in where a "fake" digital recreation improves the the hype on the used market for the originals. I never wanted one of these cabs but now I do and I love IRs. Safe to say that is the first time I've witnessed that and I'm loving it.

Almost a year later and I still love watching these in depth videos, and I'm still obviously rocking the Cali Oversized as my main cabs for anything metal (my own band or clients bands). I even got close to selling my orange ppc 412 since I was not longer using it to record my own band ever since I got the plug in, just kept the cab to record more like rock and stoner/doom bands in my studio. Other than that Cali Oversized are my go to cabs nowadays.

The biggest thanks to Nolly for all your hard work and obsession over tone because it’s finally captivated a tone chase I’ve had myself since listening to KSE when I was younger. Although I’ve grown to love all kinds of modern metal since then, the guitar tones on “End of Heartache” are the ones that first made me pursue playing metal guitar and they have been elusive to me. I’ve come close but after picking up the plug-in I can say that it definitely “hit me in the feels” and finally have me that tone ive been after for over a decade.
Nolly you are a true legend when it comes to the metal guitar community. Thank you 🙏

Man I just pulled the trigger on this and am so excited to try it out. That early Killswitch and Trivium tone is all I ever wanted. I can totally relate to Nolly’s obsession with tone-chasing but I don’t have the gear knowledge or experience to know what I’m even looking for so it’s just not a good time. So I’m very glad to have a perfectionist like Nolly out there doing years of testing and waking up in the middle of the night rethinking mic placements and I can just give him $50 lol

Find someone that looks at you like Nolly and Rabea look at each other while appreciating the other's talents

So far I’ve only seen the first few minutes of the video so maybe I'm wrong but do I understand correctly that there is actually a single slant Mesa cabinet here and Nolly swapped the different V30 speakers in the different positions? I first guessed that the options include 6 pieces from Nolly’s personal Mesa cabinet collection. Don't get me wrong it sounds great anyway.

Later in the video he talks about how he get one of the 6 cabs, (he traded it to one that he didn't like so much), so it sounds like these are different cabs with different speakers. Also some of them are an angled top speaker (at least one), others are bottom ones.

Maybe I missed it but I don't see where you discuss how it sits in your work flow. Ie. Does it require an amp modeler (like Bias FX) and you would then remove the cab in the Bias chain and use this plug in behind Bias FX to replace the cab removed in Bias FX? Or is there a way to sync this to other amp mods so it appears in that software in the cab option section? I feel like this is key info you failed to explain.

Any suggestions on which cab/mic combination to use for an Adam Jones kinda sound?

Any interest in going into this level of detail with a few other iconic speakers? Greenbacks, Creambacks, Eminence, etc?
