This is a wonderful initiative. I believe a possible solution to the gravelbed being clogged with roots is growing the plants in a hydroponics setup without the gravel and then passing the filtered water into a gravel bed if needed
If it wasn't for the beurocracy involved in fresh water pearl culture, they could have integrated that as well. That would have been an excellent way to recover initial cost as well as possibly making the setup more fine tuned and automated
Those who want to reproduce something as this need to understand, bell siphon . The methods are simple . It can be made as a intermittent ( several times a day) watering system. The Fish pond is always at a lower elevation . The plants and most plumbing are at a higher level.
Use solar panels. Replace pvc with a safer type of pipe. Even without these are 10 times less poisonous than the vegetable coming out of states like Tamilnadu
Initail setup cost is there but using 2nd hand stuff makes it really cost effective. It is commercially viable, although it requires skilled labour and basic knowledge. I would suggest a video by Adam Ragusea titled: Why farmed fish isn't always more sustainable than wild (but definitely sometimes is)
More power to you to be working model for a sustainable earth which is pesticide and germ free 🙂

Unfortunately you have to take the fish out of their natural habitat (lakes and ponds). Does that make it too costly?
