You can’t simply fire upon pirates bc they show up. The pirates have to show intent such as trying to board your vessel or firing at you first. You can however fire warning shots but you cannot simply start smoking dudes on the open water bc you know their pirates. That’s a good way to spend the rest of your life in a third world prison somewhere. Just bc it’s international waters doesn’t mean “laws don’t apply” there’s absolutely sea fairer laws that apply to any and all vessels on the open water that’s why he didn’t shoot anyone. Taking a life isn’t like you see in the movies I promise you it’s nothing like that. If there’s any fellow veterans in the comments here they can vouch for that as well. Although that person was a terrorist or a pirate you gotta remember that is also someone’s son, someone’s brother, someone’s father. Just as there would be heartbreak if you didn’t make it back there is also heartbreak in the other side as well. This isn’t Call of Duty there are no respawns.

....this is why stocks of LAWs are still useful; they may not be useful vs modern tanks, but firing a few into pirate boats as they pull up should be more than enough to kill/cripple a pirate boat.

Not only did they manage to HIGHLIGHT the sensitive areas of video, but they then 'missed' pixelating those same areas NUMEROUS times.

Sending "Armed Guard Onboard" in the AIS
Vessels transiting a Piracy High Risk Area will often send "Armed Guard Onboard" as Destination in the AIS. This deterrent measure might prevent pirates from knowing their real destination (despite the fact that the ship has armed guards onboard or not). The pirates might re-evaluate their plans to attack a vessel.

None of this will in any meaningful way deter the pirates. The ancient Romans had a big piracy problem. It was solved by doing the following: going to the pirate's base and crucifying every pirate. Suddenly, no more pirate problem. Shooting into the water to "deter" the pirates just encourages them to try again with an easier target. The pirates expect this and factor it in to their calculations.
