SURELY the game has absolutely zero responsibility to guide me here, and it's all my fault. SURELY there's no other explanation, like that the game is just confusing and needs more deliberate tutorialization. Nope. All my fault.

@@DumpsterManVODs When you exit the ladder at the start, the game points you in the direction you're meant to be headed which would have given you a combat tutorial, you just 180'd, fought a miniboss that clearly made itself a visible threat without having fought anything else by only walking at it and blamed the game for it.
You then got lost despite there being several large landmarks around the map to visit and made the bare minimum attempt to look around them, even getting up on the giant robot only to jump down instead of walking on it.
You also went back to the same enemy that bodied you 3 times over and got mad that you weren't making any progress.
Also also any time you save and meditate, the game points you directly toward the next area you need to visit.
Yes, this one is your fault lmao

@@Pikmin88 I'll humor this incredibly, needlessly abrasive comment a bit, I went back to rewatch the VOD because I was *sure* I didn't remember any sort of clear guidance after the ladder, and I still can't for the life of me understand what I was meant to see that I didn't see. In my mind the elevator to the tree on top of the cliff was the most prominent landmark, so I went up there, I did not '180' like you're suggesting, I walked along the ledge for a bit (which the game allows me to do) to get a bearing on my surroundings and immediately went towards something that looked like an elevator that I assumed led to some sort of progress. If this was wrong I'm sorry but the game (especially a demo) probably just shouldn't let me do this, at least not before shoehorning in a basic tutorial. Your point seems to be that there's a set path through the world, that I missed, but the world is open, it let me go anywhere. Do you not explore open worlds? And then when I found that boss I went and fought it, I even said it might be a scripted death, I didn't care if I died in my mind I was just hoping it'd lead to something that explained the mechanics, to suggest I was frustrated by that is ridiculous. What *was* frustrating however, was spawning in another entirely new location, still absent any kind of tutorial.
Other commenters have (much less rudely) pointed out that there's a tutorial that I missed, that's fine, I still don't for the life of me know where it was though, and missing that was the source of a lot of my frustration, but THE GAME LET ME MISS IT. I'm pretty patient with indie games, I play a lot of them, so I'm usually able to look past jank like this demo had in spades, but some people are gonna write whole games off for experiences like this, unwishlist, refund, etc. So to suggest that absolutely nothing could be done to make the mechanics of this game clearer is frankly just utterly ridiculous, even if you think I'm blind and stupid and had a 1% bad experience with it, which I don't believe based on other comments and people in my chat saying they gave up on the demo as well. I'm happy you had a better experience with the demo than me and seem to enjoy the game, but deflecting valid criticism, especially for a game that seems to be incredibly WIP still, ain't the way.

I really like the vibe this game is going for, but besides BIG PARRY WAOW the combat didn't have a ton going for it, at least at the start. It took me a long ass time to figure out you could swap between the swords and use your energy(that you'd normally use for healing) to do charge attacks. The art direction is dope too, kind of a gritty, ground-down risk of rain 2 color palette, but the way the lighting works was sometimes disorienting in darker areas. Despite how confusing it sometimes is, I actually really like the massive, spacious areas; it makes you feel like what you actually are in the world - a tiny, insignificant cog in the midst of something much, much greater than you. It could certainly use a tad bit more signposting, though. Even just a basic map (a la Deep Rock Galactic's terrain scanner) or compass/waypoint system would do wonders. It kinda sucks that just looking at all the devlogs and clips of massive bossfights is a bit more interesting than actually playing the game. Not to mention the lack of tutorial; I thought for a good 15 minutes at least that the little square cage you're dumped into at the start was the extent of the demo, so I spent a good amount of time just running about and testing combos and such until I unceremoniously slammed my face into the wall and grabbed the ladder by accident. IK this is the first version of the demo, and it's still actively being worked on, but I don't think it does a very good job of selling the game. It's quite unpolished and a bit jank, has no way to change keybinds (and some issues with controller, though I haven't tested that out, only heard from other people), and seems a bit messy at first glance. I know that I'll stick with it, but I can't say that for the thousands of other people that this demo has potentially turned off.

gonna try to help you out if you ever decide to come back to this demo. so, the thing you jumped up onto at 20:22 is a save point, like the bonfires in dark souls. notice the square above your drone? that means you can interact with stuff. press the interact button up there (e on keyboard, no clue what it is on controller but you can check in the settings tab) and you will sit down on it. press e again to "meditate" which will give you some stuff to read thats part of the story. this will set your respawn point there and show you where to go after you finish meditating. but basically just go to the top of the building that says tower on it, which you can do so by either going into the area with the moving robots like you did before and there will be a platform that is moving up and down on the right side of the entrance. or, you can go up the hill further and jump up onto the ledge. once you're up there, there will be a platform in the middle with an npc on it. talk to him. then, take the same elevator you took at 18:05, and from there glide onto the big robot on the right side. find the way inside the robot, interact with the two panels there and then you'll get a cutscene. you will then be able to fight a boss, go to the building that had the guy on it in the cutscene (theres also a save point and a ladder to get up to the top behind the building). after that boss, you will be able to fight another boss right after, and then thats the end of the demo. i definitely agree with you that the game needs a better sense of direction though, i only found out a lot of the stuff i told you from their discord server. theres also a bunch of combat mechanics that it just doesnt tell you. anyway, i hope you enjoy the 2 boss fights if you ever decide to come back to this. (theres also a secret boss fight i can guide you to if you want me to.)

I appreciate it, after trying two separate demos of this game and being pretty damn disappointed by both of them, my opinion holds that the dev should be focused on refining the game through closed alphas/more calculated playtesting than releasing mediocre demos publicly, and I probably won't return until another substantial demo update comes out... I do still believe in the promise of this game and I'm excited to play it whenever it's DONE (hopefully in a few years based on this demo), but it ain't there for me yet pretty much every aspect feels underbaked at the moment to the point where I'm probably not going back to this demo for more.

crazy i believe this is the second demo and i just played the third iteration of the demo just now. The amount of features added in 7 Months is pretty good for a solo dev. I dont know how it was back then but the movement doesnt feel jank at all anymore, in fact it feels really good, combat is fun and the atmosphere is already strong and presents a strong vibe of a larger than life post apocalyptic feeling. I can only imagine how beatiful this game is gonna look when the graphics get updated over time. Thats not to say its perfect, there are hidden mechanics you most likely will only know when u watched twitter clips and a little bit of jank to clean up.
Its kinda noticeable how much handholding games do nowadays and i enjoyed to be able to go where i want right from the start. The tutorial provided me with enough knowledge to have fun but the mechanics could be explained more. It believe it's intended to not know every mechanic from the start and rather find out through nps, quests and the world. Something like a grace would be cool if you just want to progress the story though.

I usually love that in games as well! But I feel like it needs a strong mechanical foundation, and at least a brief tutorial at minimum and then I think I could swallow a bit more aimlessness. i loved the demo but it feels way hard for the demo level and there needs to be some better guidance as there is no clear way to go and the combat tutorial (easily missable judging by your game play) doesn't tell you about things like healing or switching between the 2 swords once i got that down i could be that "boss" at around 14:01 and the parry is needed to do anything but they dont tell you how it works

I can appreciate a hard game but this game is just directionless at the moment, tough to even evaluate the difficulty when it's just impossible to tell what's going on and what you're supposed to be doing. Also if there was a combat tutorial I definitely feel like it shouldn't be missable. I figured out *basic* combat on my own eventually, but it definitely took trial and error, and even then I still didn't feel like I really got it.

I played the demo today and the fundamentals of the game are very under-baked. I played on a controller and it felt terrible to move around (very slippery) and some buttons were very inconsistent especially the glide button after jumping. The lock on is atrocious, it would lock on to targets nowhere near the player character. I love the aesthetic and Nier/Metal Gear Rising gameplay feel the devs are going for, but it needs ALOT more time (maybe 2 to 3 years?) before an actual release. I can wait to parry nukes if it means the entire game is good.

this game is definetly going to have the rain world situation
put you in a worldwith no tutorial or anything of the sort and then expect you to constantly struggle till you understand
most people are just going to quit and leave an understandably bad review
this game NEEDS a tutorial super bad
and like rainworld it also needs a sense of direction
people will call rainworld understandable and give it all the praise
but these people have either spent hours playing it confused and blind or have looked up ways to enjoy it and to even undersand it
these games struggle by trying to give you a sense of unknown
but they make the unknown so gigantic that it takes away from the game
the tutorial for rainworld is small and insignificant, and you only get a real one with the remix mode added YEARS later
    this game didnt even bother
the combat is an even bigger problem
feels like its gonna be an open world game with 3 cherry picked combats per 5 acres and the only significant fights be bosses
enemies didnt even have sounds when their attacks hit you and it was VERY clunky
the player health is so small (only 3 hits it seems) that not having it be described feels almost diabolical
also feels very plain and heavily relies on "big flashy attack, this must be good!" based on what happened around the end
i do wish that this just ends up being 2 bad demos
because so far it just feels like a giant nothing burger
its going to have dedicated fans do nothing but grind the game all day until they learn all the mechanics
and then they will justify the bad gameplay with some "skill issue" level reasoning
its like they saw rainworld and took the "could be good" parts of its game design and didnt realize why they were in the "could be" section
it puts you in an understandable enviorment with no help at all
and its even worse in this game because you have so many different mechanics and things to do that it just doesnt look fun and probably didnt feel fun
brother wouldve been stuck walking around in the intro if it werent for the bright lights
i just really wish this game ends up being worth while because it looks so dang cool
it has that ror2 art direction and that nier kinda vibe but holy shit im not gonna be having that much faith
if a demo is bad then the full release might be ass
demos are usually the point in a game that convinces someone if they want to spend their money or not, if not for outside sources like youtube and reviews
    yikes, just yikes

I can somewhat appreciate if what the game is going for is this feeling of free and aimless exploration, but it at minimum needs a combat tutorial (that you can't miss) especially as the mechanics are a bit more intricate, and unfortunately if this aimless feeling *isn't* what it's going for, I'm worried it's going to be used as a crutch for the game not having clearer direction.
I think the game could end up really good but this demo is going to rightfully scare some people off.

For example, it's more often then not more worth it just to spam click one weapon to deal max DPS, which kinda sucks. I really hope they lean towards the swapping, but we'll see.
