I think with the tail wagging the dog, we're seeing small brands make something unique and original because they don't have to justify risk taking to a product manager, or a board, and have marketing dilute it to make it safe, and accounts cutting corners to squeeze margins etc. These microbrands can take much wilder swings successfully. We see it in so many other industries where startups challenge larger incumbents.
The analysis made by Blake about the watch industry needing to look and move forward is absolutely correct. While we went through a very interesting decade for the industry, it has been a period of design stagnation driven by marketing and low hanging fruits. Would have been interesting if they acknowledged the Bulgari October Finissimo as the first watch to start this forward looking trend about a decade ago. Would be curious to hear your opinion of the octo finissimo within this context. I believe it deserves even more recognition and admiration that what it already has.
This was AMAZING, Andrew + Blake. Love the Deep Track too.
So good.

Ha. I think you just nailed it. Very well put and I completely agree. Microbrands can pivot on a dime.
