This look incredible! It would also be interesting if the audience could affect the gameplay somehow, like in Paper Mario TTYD, but I dunno what they'd do. Also, I suggest making that Boomerang Bro's helmet bigger as to cover its eyes, as it's practically unnoticeable from the front, making them look like just regular koopas, so the player might not be expecting it to shoot boomerangs and it could result in them dying.
maybe there would be "messup ground" instead of spikes where if you fall there, the audience will boo and throw bananas and boomerangs at you until you leave it

I wonder if it's possible for sounds from Donkey Kong 64 to be imported into this. If Mario gets hit by an enemy or falls on the spikes, the audience boos him for his "poor performance".

Interesting, I just found out that Mario 3 was originally going to have an angled perspective, and that the checkerboard floor was a remnant of that, so this is probably somewhat closer to the original vision in some respects!

My only critique would be to make the textures more pixelated. The bilinear filter upscaling of the 8bit textures doesn't look very good.
