This was a very cool episode and it makes me happy that I am currently in college studying to be a paleontologist. I have gone on a few fossil digs already and have taken several paleontology and historical geology classes and I couldn't be happier. It's good to know how much work gets put into recovering fossils and freeing them. Gives me some more respect for paleontologists and gives me something to look forward to. That oreodont was very cool. I will admit that I had to look up what that one was. It was still cool though. Hope I can go dig out there sometime in the future. I would love to see what I could find. I would also love to work with Peter Larson too. Maybe as an internship or something. I'll have to check out if he does stuff like that. Thank you for the video, I really enjoyed it.
Just be honest, don't glue a dinosaur tail to a bird body and claim you discovered a "archeoraptor" or find a feather in amber and claim it was attached to a dinosaur without evidence.
Not all dinosaurs have feathers. It's mostly the meateaters/theropods like Raptors, Oviraptors, Tyrannosaurids that had feathers. Dinosaurs like Stegosaurs, Hadrosaurs (duck billed), Sauropods (long necked), Ankylosaurs and Ceratopsians (horned dinosaurs) all had scaly skin. So it's a bit of a mix.

Paleontology and many other scientific fields of study deserve so much more funding. The entire cinematic landscape owes a lot to just Paleontology alone. We wouldn't have films like Jurassic Park if paleontologists never unearthed these ancient creatures

this is really, really cool! but i should mention, in the intro, (what i’m presuming is) pteranodon isn’t a dinosaur! it’s a pterosaur, which is a flying reptile actually closer related to dinosaurs and birds than crocodiles and other living reptiles, unlike other reptiles such as marine reptiles :p
I read a really interesting book a while back called “ All yesterday’s” by Darren Naish. Simply put it shows how we can’t even know for sure what prehistoric animals even looked like. Stating that we don’t know where cartilage, fat, was built up or situated on an animal what colour they were, plumage, fur thickness, and variations, scales or anything. He used the example if we had never seen a hippo, a whale, a cat, baboon or swan and if scientists were trying to rebuild the animals the way we “re build “ dinosaurs which he refers to a shrink wrapping. You can find his illustrations online it’s absolutely fascinating

There is acctually evidence that not all Dinosaurs had feathers, the most preserved specimin (a carnotaurus) had extensive skin impressions meaning that this dinosaur, evidently was a scaly beast.
Perhaps some dinosaurs were close to fully feathered like Raptors. Perhaps some may have been entirely scaly . And perhaps some had feathers on only some parts of their body. We know every skin impression we have from T-Rex shows scaly skin, but that doesn't mean that perhaps T-Rex didn't have feathers on some other parts of its body, such as on the back of the head or on its back. To be honest, probably thanks to Jurassic Park, I can't help but think of T-Rex as sort of a giant fully scaled lizard.

Small theropods like Deinonychus, Oviraptor or Utahraptor (one of the biggest feathered ones) were definitely feathered, because they were (probably) warmblooded and have to controll there bodytemperaure like modern birds. Bigger theropods like Acrocantosaurus, Tyrannosaurus and Tarbosaurus maybe had some protofeathers on there necks but were mostly scaled. because of there size. A warmblooded creature which is bigger than a modern rhino/elephant will overheath and die, if they would have feathers or fur so thats the reason why small theropods like dromaeosauridae had feathers and bigger ones were mostly scaled. Strange is, that for example some hadrosaurus like Edmontosaurus definitely had scale. So maybe some dinosaurs were warmblooded hunters and others were coldblooded. Personally I think, that a lot of carnivores were warmblooded, because if you check there bones you will find some hints, that proof that. I agree, but think the larger theropods, like T. Rex, would’ve had feathers as baby chicks because they may have had trouble keeping warm when tiny. However, as the animal aged, they would’ve molted the feathers.
Please don't spread false information. Nobody knows for sure if the biggest theropod dinos like Tyrannosaurus and Acrocanthosaurus were feathered and/or scaly. But at least we know that a fairly large theropod, Yutyrannus huali (Tyrannosauroidea, Cretaceous) was completely feathered. Nobody knows precisely how the thermoregulation of big theropods worked, so the "overheat" argument is pretty meaningless. Tyrannosaurus rex wasn't an elephant or a rhino, and comparing dinosaurs with mammals can often be misleading.

my favourite dinosaur has always been the ankylosaurus. ive had two little ankylosaurus toys when i was little and i just loved them. and when i first saw a skeleton of one in a museum my first thought was "this thing is perfectly rideable!" i want one :D
Fun fact: There's a chunk of amber that has a small tail in it and has grayish feathers, when the amber was being dug out of the mine, people must've accidentally cut off the poor dino's tail, but that also means even more proof of feathers!

Correction for the title: Proof....SOME dinosaurs had feathers. It's already been proven that certain species had scaly skin with fossil skin impressions.
While that is true, that doesn't exclude them from having any feathers. There is a lot of debate about this still, with many paleontologists believing that all dinosaur species had at least ornate feathers and others who propose there were feathered and featherless dinosaurs.
Big Brother There’s no way the ALLL dinosaurs had feathers. I highly doubt feathers were present on sauropods, ankylosaurids, stegosaurids, hadrosaurs, or inquanodontids. In fact, we’ve already found fossil mummies of some of those, most of which have non feathery skin. (Either bumpy, scaly, etc) Feathers mainly speculated on theropods, specifically small/ medium sized ones. Even then, we’ve still found some of them with no feathers. Carnotaurus for example has very bumpy, scaly, and leathery skin. Sorry to burst your bubble, but it had to be said.

New proof has come out that only some dinos had feathers and that sometimes only babies had feathers and the T Rex never had feathers as it had the same scales as bird feat.
No, although it is true trex most likely did not have much feathers, we can not yet be certain it had no feathers at all.

I'm 11 and when Im older I want to be a paleontologist and a zoologist so i can open up a wildlife sanctuary. I've loved dinosaurs since I was two when ever I seen the Jurassic Park films I fell in love with dinosaurs. I'm the only one in my town that loves Dinosaurs. In history class when ever the teacher says the word dinosaurs everyone turns and looks at me.

Correction for the title: Proof....SOME dinosaurs had feathers. It's already been proven that certain species had scaly skin with fossil skin impressions.
While that is true, that doesn't exclude them from having any feathers. There is a lot of debate about this still, with many paleontologists believing that all dinosaur species had at least ornate feathers and others who propose there were feathered and featherless dinosaurs.
Big Brother There’s no way the ALLL dinosaurs had feathers. I highly doubt feathers were present on sauropods, ankylosaurids, stegosaurids, hadrosaurs, or inquanodontids. In fact, we’ve already found fossil mummies of some of those, most of which have non feathery skin. (Either bumpy, scaly, etc) Feathers mainly speculated on theropods, specifically small/ medium sized ones. Even then, we’ve still found some of them with no feathers. Carnotaurus for example has very bumpy, scaly, and leathery skin.

It's hard to believe there are people out there that don't even believe in evolution, where you can so easily go and see actual evidence that the birds we see every day are so closely related to dinosaurs. In fact, birds technically ARE dinosaurs, if I remember correctly.

They are a part of the dinosauria but they are avian dinosaurs not part of the non avian.

On one hand it’s so awesome to discover bones around the world and find out what the animals would have looked like. On the other hand, you’d have to write a research paper for every discovery you make. I think it’s still worth it.😉
