This is NOT your average house plant! Although it looks like or may even be a plant in your home, do NOT try an experiment such as this.
On today's episode, Coyote travels to Costa Rica to compare the effects of the Dumb Cane leaf, stalk, and stem when touched to his arm. Perhaps not surprisingly to some, he was also dumb enough to touch the stem to his tongue!
While Coyote's side effects in this video were mild, make no mistake, this plant can cause severe irritation, burning, and even death.
HUGE THANKS to the Bio Sur Foundation for leading this adventure at the Río Nuevo Nature Reserve. Their mission is to protect the endangered wildlife of Costa Rica by creating rainforest reserves through land acquisitions, environmental education of the local population, and engagement with national and international partners. It happens in the big toe because that's the farthest place from the heart so there's less blood flowing through it (or at least at a reduced speed rate) because the heart works harder to pump blood back up.

Assuming he had the correct antivenin and just so happened to be in a hospital as he got bitten, thus ensuring his survival (look up all recorded inland taipan bites), it actually wouldn't make for much of a video. Pins and needles and numbness at most.
Gaboon vipers, puff adders, bushmasters, or frankly anything that's either cytotoxic or haemotoxic, now that would make for an exciting video. Better yet, imagine he did it somewhere in rural Africa where the nearest clinic is an hour away.
The venom of the large vipers don't reach anywhere near the potency of the inland taipan, but the pain would be through the roof, and chances of survival are actually more uncertain due to the workings of cytotoxins not being fully understood.

Hello there. I'm an agronomist and my PhD thesis was in calcium oxalate crystals. Another species with similar effects is Philodendron sp. These species have developed a great defense mechanism to prevent herbivores from eating them. Though the role of these crystals is not just for defense but also for calcium storage and for the protection of the photosynthetic mechanism under stress. Another very common species that has raphide shaped Calcium Oxalate crystals is the grapevine. But these crystals are less in quantity and of shorter length thus eating food made with vineleaves like the Turkish Dolma isn't lethal for you.

He strongly overexaggerated the risks and effects. The plant is an irritant, but that's about it. No chemical burns either, as the calcium oxalate (he called it oxide -.-) raphides cause purely mechanical damage. Even most people who got the plant into their mouth do not need serious medical help: An analgesic + antihistamine to keep down pain and inflammation at best. The raphides can probably be dissolved with citric acid/sulfamic acid solution.

A possible antidote would be a mixture of dillute citrate + EDTA or dillute solution of sulfamic acid. Those should be able to dissolve the raphides in no time. Generally speaking though, the majority of people is just fine with a mild analgesic and an antihistamine.

Growing up we had a huge plant of this in our livingroom. We were told from a young age not to touch it, don't eat it, and just leave it alone cause it could kill us. We had to watch our animals cause they would go sniffing around it and the cat tried to munch it once. I remember thinking why would we have a plant that could kill us. My mom said it looked nice and it had been passed down from my dad's mom who got it from her mom, etc. My mom would give out cuttings to people to grow some for themselves but always warned everyone to be careful. The name stuck in my head cause I called it death in bakiya lol I was young over 35 years ago.

In Argentina we have this tiny mosquitos called "jejenes" I got bit like two dozen times, I've seen adults get allergic reactions to them, they ITCH SO MUCH, and the MORE YOU SCRATCH, the MORE IT ITCHES, and THERE'S RISK FOR INFECTION FROM SCRATCHING.
If you leave it alone for like 5 days it goes away. If you don't... it can last WEEKS. And I've still got the marks from the bites on my legs. And that was in february.
Mine lasted like 3 weeks, I had to take anti inflamatory/antihistaminic mix, and corticosteroids to reduce the allergic reaction. It was HELL, I could only think of how itchy it was. Getting to sleep was hard because the blankets rubbing against the bites made them itch up again. Rubbing against anything slightly evoked the thought of rubbing against it like a dog to relieve the itch.
Cold water helps. Hot water makes it worse.

Because he tells everybody that these stings are more risky and dangerous than they actually are. The statements about the raphides in this video are not only false (it's calcium oxalate, not oxide and the irritation is purely mechanical - no chemical burns), but his reaction is also very overexaggerated. His camera man is already fed up with all the acting.
