Thanks for your exposition of this, Matthew. As we were going through the darkness of this eclipse I could not overcome the sense of the arrogance and foolishness of those who somehow believe they can control the climate. What an amazing God who holds the universe in the palm of His hands.
Matt, thank you for addressing these topics and situations biblically. You always teach us something of great worth. It was good to hear more on the plagues and the way Jonathan Edwards wrote about eclipses. With each example you gave I was learning.
I agree with u 100 percent. Its a sign if judgement but of hope too. A great down to earth biblical explanation. Makes slot of sence to me as a spiritual Christian
It's more the idea of darkness during the day. I think quite a few of these are not reasonably eclipses (like the one where stars stop shining, cuz during totality you might actually see stars)
@@Andy-df5fjMore importantly eclipses can simply never happen during passover because the moon is in the wrong phase. It had to have been something else.
I believe in these Scriptures that were read about the darkness that took place at those times is just GOD forbidding the light to reach earth, not an obstruction of some sort.A favorite scripture of mine is in the book of Job,where it says that the "lightning" answers back to GOD..."Here I am" it says .Also he speaks of controlling the light in following verses.
John 14:27 Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful. Be ready for the coming of Christ, but fo not fear because God is still in control.
Dear Pastor, for me the takeaway is simple, the eclipses we see are wonderful natural occurring phenomena, lasting approximately 4 or so minutes. Biblical manifestations of eclipses are supernatural events created by the hand of God for a specific reason. Blessings to you and your family.
No. I don't think so. Matthew, I always appreciate your opinions on all things. But, I don't necessarily see any biblical connection with this fairly common natural occurrence.
It's not like he's making any prophecies about the world ending or who will win the U.S. election later this year or whether WWIII is about to start. He just gave some historical biblical examples of judgments and such. Every natural disaster or event is an opportunity to 1) repent of any sin and 2) bow the knee and acknowledge once again that, contrary to the views of the Climate Cult, Jesus Christ rules this universe. We do not.

Matt you should write a book on all the biblical symbolism in nature and creation. I believe God has not only created the world and animals the way they are for functional purposes, but also for symbolic meaning.
Some of these are probably just straight miracles and not eclipses (like the ones with the stars not shining because stars can become visible in the day during an eclipse)
I think people are trying way too hard to try to attribute meaning to the eclipse. After all, their timing is predictable. They've happened before, and we know when the next one will happen. People want to see some sort of prophetic meaning in something we know is going to happen. I'm open to the idea of an eclipse being a reminder in much the same way that a rainbow is, but for people to run around saying "today's eclipse means _______" is a stretch. In the case of the crucifixion, people assume the darkening of the sun has to be an eclipse. Even a total eclipse only lasts about 7-8 minutes rather than three hours. God is the maker of the universe. If he wants to dim the sun, he doesn't need the moon to do it. Assuming that the reference to a third of the sun, moon and stars being darkened as an eclipse is also a guess, especially since you can't have an eclipse of both the sun and the moon at the same time.
Are we assuming the periods of darkness mentioned in Exodus and at crucifixion are natural and not supernatural? I thought of them as supernatural events.
There's no way that an eclipse lasted 3 days in exodus or 3 hours at the crucifixion. I don't think Matt is saying that those were just eclipses but rather looking at the theme of the sun being darkened.
Please send frogs to Athens Georgia. They eat mosquitos and maybe locusts! Sorry, I can't help myself. Blessings Pastor Matt for excellent contact as always. A ton to ponder and pray on!
I thought these exceptional times in the Bible, of God bringing darkness, was supposed to be specially caused by Him, not just natural events. I always thought that He was using things that do occur naturally and pulling them out, causing more extreme versions of them for His purposes. If that makes any sense…

Hey there. I'm a Roman Catholic. What you said about the glory of Christ being eclipsed in His death is something we dwell on in our liturgy during what we call the Sacred Triduum. Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. On Good Friday after we hear and pray through the Passion Narrative of the Gospel of St. John, the altar is stripped and all the lights go out. The next day before the Easter Vigil, the priest blesses a fire outside the church. Then the paschal candle is lit and brought into the church. At this point we are all in the dark but we've all been given little candles. From the Paschal candle, which represents Jesus Christ, a few candles are lit by the altar boys. They then light a few of the parishioners candles who in turn light a candle or two of others around them. Very quickly the church is lit by hundreds of candles. By this practice we are reminded that after Christ died, and His light was obscurred, He rose on the third day and His light spread to enlighten a darkened world. Anyway that's what your take on Him being eclipsed reminded me of.
Jonathan Edwards finds the Gospel in an eclipse while The Gospel Coalition tries to superimpose it into a Taylor Swift concert. I'll stick with Edwards.
Those times in the Bible when the sky went dark, e.g. the Egyptian plague and Jesus death on the cross, how do we know that was due to an eclipse? In other words, God using a natural phenomenon in a supernatural way. I don’t think we know that for sure. It could’ve been just a completely supernatural thing where God turned the sun off, or he put His hand in front of it etc. Of course, I acknowledge God may well have used an eclipse, but how do we know that?
It is written in the Holy Bible that a eclipse happened during Jesus's death on the cross & not because of his death. God knew when a eclipse would happen in that area & when so that is why Jesus held off going there until the time was right.
The bible does not say there was an eclipse during Jesus' death. You inserted that. Scripture "says the sun went dark," which is a biblical portent of Christ's second coming, when the sun will go dark and the stars will fall from the sky. A supernatural occurance to be sure, but not an eclipse.

It's more the idea of darkness during the day. I think quite a few of these are not reasonably eclipses (like the one where stars stop shining, cuz during totality you might actually see stars)
Also an eclipse physically cannot happen during passover
An eclipse actually darkens the sun over the course of about 3 hours. The relatively short totality is just the peak of that darkening.
