2015 Chevy Spark EV - More Torque Than A Subaru STI

  • How does the Chevrolet Spark EV stack up against the Soul EV, Leaf, 500E, i-Miev, and e-Golf? Of the EVs tested, the battery was on the smaller side, though range is still similar to the Leaf or e-Golf. Weight is kept low, and it’s the most powerful of the group. On top of that, it has the most torque, more than a Fiat 500e and Mitsubishi i-Miev combined. In fact, more than my Subaru STI. Cargo space is somewhat limited, and the drag coefficient is nothing too impressive. Charge times are decent, and the vehicle can fast charge to 80% in about 20 minutes. Pricing is low vs the competition, and I found the Spark EV to be the most fun to drive of the bunch, mostly due to the excessive torque and low curb weight. Be sure to check out the video description for links to the other electric vehicle reviews.

    I bought a 2015 model just like this one about 2 months ago. I absolutely love this little car! It is great for acceleration, perfect for tight, heavy traffic, and a dream to drive in the twisties. I have been able to find tons of free chargers around my area so even though it doesn't have the range of say a tesla, it is still a great vehicle for what it is. I am very confused to why chevy decided to pull the plug on this. I guess they REALLY like the bolt?

    I bought a Spark EV for my wife to commute with. The agreement was that I would drive our 2013 Mazda3. Trouble is, the Spark is more fun than the Mazda.

      Sorry to chime in on an old thread but I looked at the spark ev super fun car I was impressed at the features for $17k out the door in CA plus ev tax rebates but got the new 1.4 instead figuring when I trade it in 2 years the ev tech will be better but good little review

      Update: We've had our Spark EV now for seven months. Still loving it. Something I didn't mention in my first post: I drove the gasoline version before I drove the electric version. They look the same, but they drive completely differently. The gasoline version is under-powered, noisy, has a choppy ride, too much body roll in the corners and the skinny tires have poor grip. The electric version on the other hand has gobs of power, is very smooth and quiet. Its wider tires make it more sure-footed; the added weight of the batteries improves the ride quality, and because that extra weight lowers the center of gravity -- coupled with the wider tires -- the handling is much improved. Seven months ago, there were no Spark EVs available in Southern California, so I drove the gasoline version to see what it was like and I was completely turned off by it. Fortunately, my salesman let me drive his personal Spark EV and the difference between the two was like night and day. I was sold. I expect that in 2018 when my lease is over, I'll buy the Tesla model 3. The 2017 Chevy Bolt looks like it will also be worth considering.

      +MrTeff it definitely was worlds different and refined versus the gas version I will agree. I really would have purchased one hands down if it weren't for the range and the availability of ev chargers I commute for school while there aren't ev chargers everywhere other than teslas rolling around here in the Bay Area. It's really good to hear from an spark ev owner for sure I will purchase one by 2 years hope there's an updated model. I wasn't to fond of the price on the bolt as a student. How's the maintenance work on your spark?

    • @erikgonzalez2278
      @erikgonzalez2278 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +MrTeff there's a shortage of even the gas model here in the Bay. Dealers want them as a trade in even. I had to call 6 dealers in the area before I could find 2.

    If you find a 2014 model, torque is 402 instead

    • @moocow2oo426
      @moocow2oo426 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      From what I hear, the 2015 has a gear reduction so it puts out the same amount of torque to the road as the 2014. Not sure of the validity of the claim though.

    My wife want her next car to be electric ( she currently have a 2003 LE fully loaded corolla with manual Transmission), maybe in 2-4 years, The bolt was the for car I brought up. But since I will still owned a Fuel cars ( so we can use that on road trips) This could be a really good choice for her to go to work and short trip. If she need the range, She could use mine. It's ugly, yes, but not too expensive. Thx for the review.

    i bet it's a breeze in a tight parking lot? btw how does a heater work in an EV, beings how it doesnt have an engine producing heat?

    • @samueljackson856
      @samueljackson856 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      From everything I've watched the heat significantly reduces the range because it takes the most power, even more than the AC. Also if you're in a cold environment the battery life is also worse as well as battery degradation.

    • @moocow2oo426
      @moocow2oo426 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      So, the vehicle does provide heat just like an internal combustion vehicle. Just not from the same source. Heating the cabin does take a lot more electricity to accomplish though so I plan on pre warming the interior and using the heated seats in the winter time. Maybe even using the lowest heat setting, but that would probably be on occasion.

    He drove the car in low instead of drive. In the city stop light to stop light probably ideal but a flawed review as a result. Like testing a mustang and never taking it out of 1st gear.

      It has an electric motor, there is only one gear. It's not like using first all the time, because your only option is first.

    • @gregorywesthoff8694
      @gregorywesthoff8694 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I am not trying to troll you or your review, but I just bought this car two weeks ago and I also have a Volt which has the same gear selector functions. In your video you described the automatic deceleration due to the regenerative braking. This only occurs if the car is in L instead D, otherwise it has traditionally coasting characteristics. The viewers were mislead, and thanks to my unfair analogy you defend it without reviewing your video. Please take the time to check this video for inaccuracies. I apologize for my comment and promise to remove it. You had a good review otherwise. I feel there is a lot of misinformation on youtube, and you seem to care about you reputation, so I will leave it up to you.

      I have a 2015 model. and the only difference between D and L is that L gives a more aggressive brake regen. It is there in D but it just feels like normal coasting. There is literally no other difference there, I have tested this.
