    here's my aquarium update. after 1 full year of set up, my black ghost knife has out grown the 20L. it is 1 year old, got him at about 3 inches, now 10 inches. my red rubin sword plant after a full year of looking very ratty, has doubled itself with a beautiful full plant which must have come from a runner. my dwarf sag has propagated but still looks short and scrawny. the java fern looks about the same, nice, but it is very slow to grow. all plants are in flower pots with potting soil and coarse gravel topping. i am so lazy i do a water change every couple months, about 25-50%. my water is 7.5 pH and hard.
    --------------water information from public tests-------
    (from PG sentinel-- Sentinel reporters conducted water tests at 50 locations across the two counties, including 20 in Prince George’s, and had the samples analyzed by National Testing Laboratories Ltd. in Ypsilanti, Mich. In the Prince George’s County samples, while most of the contaminants were not detected or fell below Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards, five samples contained levels of trihalomethanes (THMs) above the maximum contaminant level. Eight samples also had water classified as hard).
    -- according to WSSC, our potomac tap water is (3 tests) :---
    GENERAL WATER QUALITY
    Alkalinity mg/L 33 40 26
    Color Units 0 5 0
    Hardness mg/L 59 78 48
    pH S.U. 7.4 7.9 7.2
    So overall i am pleased with the plants altho it took a year to show any progress. i am glad to hear LR is not doing water changes, since i hardly do them myself. i don't have a real filter either, but i do have a bag of the ceramic cylinders piled on top a bar air stone on one end of the tank which really pushes the water through them and across the tank. i usually let the algae grow all over the glass until water change time when all is cleaned off. i do add ferts after the water changes, at about half strength. the large bark cave has turned the water amber from tannins. not really sure how the water quality is affecting the plants or fish, but they seem adapted to it. wish i had soft acid water, but the pH actually seems to increase over time. not sure whether the mg/ca in the water does that over time, or i possibly have some limestone in my gravel which i field collected.
    this tank seems to take about an hour of time a week just to feed the fish since i collect earthworms. i have started a worm farm, so i'll see how that goes. how the heck does anyone find time to take care of several tanks? i have to spend about 3 hours just to change the water!! so i admire folks who can keep it together and have lovely planted tanks. and i love that fish. i can only see him at night, but he's a real acrobat when he comes out. rest of the time he sleeps in his bark cave. just wanted to put this on here if it helps anyone. fish are always a great mystery, which is why we enjoy them i suppose.

    So you use straight RO water for top offs but remineralize RO for water changes???

    • @LRBaquatics
      @LRBaquatics  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Correct when I used to use mostly RO. Now I run mostly hard water tap. If I was only using remineralize RO and it had been months with out any fertilization then I would maybe remineralize it but would test its TDS first in such a case.

    • @LRBaquatics
      @LRBaquatics  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually a razor should be able to get it off. If not it has to be imbedded and then I dont know, especially on the trim it can be challenging.
