    There's so much in this pedal but I hope I covered most of the stuff. I may do a follow-up video diving into the modulation effects and wah features. Time codes:
    0:00 - Gem Box III in the Mix (Bass and Guitar)
    1:12 - How it works
    3:52 - How it sounds direct to a sound card
    5:49 - My sort of tone with a backing track (Klon/Twin/Delay)
    8:36 - How the Gem Box III sounds into an amplifier
    17:55 - My Full Review (pros and cons)

      This unit is far superior than alot on the market. Mid priced ones anyway. Far superior to any zoom unit. It's very organic sounding, and would probably put it up there with the dearest Mooer unit . As you say. Far to much to mention. But a good representation of the unit. P. S.... I found when loading up my 3rd party ir's, it became a different beast. Helix territory Imo. All the very best buddy. Dave.

    That noise suppressor button is the smartest thing ever. You can now choose whether or not you want the noise in your sound, and that shows a lot about how Joyo understand my work as a soundman :D

    Most of these mulit-effects pedals have a learning curve but the benefit is you have almost any effect you can think of available in a tiny package.

    Sounds great through the real amp recorded with a real mic. The direct sound is kinda boring, and sterile - like it’s in a bland vacuum, but that’s pretty much true of any of these devices.
    The effects, and overdrives, no matter how cool they may be, are really only as good as what they end up being heard/recorded through, and nothing beats a real amp/real mic combo imho. 😉👍

  • @grotto46
    @grotto46 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Sounded better through the amp. I think these boards are great for tinkering and trying to experiment with different sounds without amassing pedals, but in the end, I found myself tinkering more than paying. Still fun though. Thanks for the review.

    Great review Man! I think you said it best when you said “plenty to keep you busy.” My wife would NOT be happy if I had one of these!! It would be a fun piece of equipment to mess around with if you have a good way to record and other equipment for playback. Hours (days? months?) of entertainment for sure! It would seem if you got good enough with presets, seems like you could use it live too? 🤙🏻🎸🎼

  • @BeardedBluesDude

    I like the fact that these are coming with a drum setup. Makes it foot for folks to learn to keep a rhythm when they play. Sounds you got were pretty good if you ask me. I'd love one of these but... It's hard to beat the ease of using analog pedal controls. For a recording tool when you have time to tinker it's great.

      I'm equally surprised that this hasn't had a lot more attention. Looks a killer piece of kit and is £245(!) at Thomann. A fraction of the price of the equivalents from Helix etc

    • @robinr22
      @robinr22 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I ended up getting one on black Friday for £180 - be surprised if it's less than that! It's a great unit but I don't get the sense that it sold at all well - Thomann don't even carry it any more, mine was the last ones they had so I suspect it bombed a little bit. So surprised that they're releasing another!
      Edit: they announced this fifteen weeks ago. Barely any knobs makes it useless for me.

    • @wayneanderson2866
      @wayneanderson2866 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was considering getting this to try out as an all in one pedal but realized that this is designed to be an amp only option & no effects are included (such as octave/ chorus etc). It might work for some people but I’m still leaning towards a Helix type option with everything available in one pedal for guitar & bass.

    • @robinr22
      @robinr22 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@wayneanderson2866 it has chorus (2 of them in fact) and pitch shift also. It's definitely not just an amp pedal. Probably not quite as full featured as a Helix but it's a proper multifx and at a fraction of the price.

    I see you're a person of fine taste! The Marshall AS-50D is my favorite solid sate amp ever and quite affordable and immensely practical and versatile being a combo amp with phantom power :) Edit : oh it's not an AS-50D "acoustic soloist"... still... but seriously nothing beats it for singer songwriters who don't need a crazy transient response or gain, on acoustic or on a tele or strat, and the chorus is lovely!

    I know tones a subjective thing, but what are some of the manufacturers thinking when they make presets? It befuddles me that they think it sounds great (not slamming Joyo, just an overall statement on presets). It should be a starting point to dial, but when some of the presets sound like crap to start with you have no other option than to dial them in yourself. Overall, it sounded pretty good but they have a few competitors in that price range. It's certainly cheaper than the Mooer.
    BTW Shane, all of your affiliate links don't work :(

    • @jas_bataille
      @jas_bataille 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The manufacturers think about the producers first, NOT the players. I've been in this game for a long time, and I spent a whole decade programming my Roland drum module to make it sounds like a really well produced acoustic set. Now I listened to their new kits. Verdict? I think I can sell my patches for 30-50 bucks a set. Seriously. That is because the presets are made for the mainstream producers wishing to save time and money on drum sessions. And what do they want? Pumped-up 808s. And so are the presets designed for the same purpose on those units.
      Having said that, presets are usually lame because they're the very last thing the engineers do, and they usually are extremely rushed. Video editing presets are the biggest joke in the multimedia industry ever!

    Shane, I really like what you did, buuuut... there's a tendency nowadays that reviewers of modellers/MFX concentrate only on the amp modelling. Yes, amp modelling is probably the most important part of these boxes, but subpar (standard) effects and horrible operation can completely kill such a product.
    So, it'd be nice to dedicate a couple of minutes to effects and their parameters and how easy (or not) it is to create a patch.
    For example, the Mooer GE200 is a complete nightmare in this respect: You have to tweak every single value with that BMW i-drive wheel, and - as _one_ example - the EQ module doesn't even have an output level parameter, and iirc the reverbs don't have a tone control.
    No review told me that. It seems they all just tell you what's good about the product.
    So how's the Gem Box 3 (sounds like a gaming console) in these regards?

    If the pedal is on the floor, how do you press down two of the buttons simultaneously? I find all of these modeling boxes fairly pointless; if you play live, the difference between one setting and another is very hard to notice in the mix. I've played for the past twenty or so years using no effects, other than a DL-4 from time to time. My guitars through my '65 AC-15 and '95 Peavey Classic 20, switchable from one to the other or both together, sound good enough for me. And nobody seems to notice that all these LP-style guitars sound the same when distorted. I can't stand these muddy humbuckers. Good review; it might have some uses for recording, but live, forget it.

    • @Newnodrogbob
      @Newnodrogbob 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I mean, listen to you: you don’t use effects, and you think all Humbuckers sound the same. Of course a product that is loads of effects all in one place isn’t for you. As far as two buttons simultaneously; it can be done, but it’s a tad awkward. I think if you need more than 3 presets during one song, maybe this isn’t the product you’d want...

And make it momentary when pressed long, because no one needs the drum computer in this situation.

      If you can't get it out of the Headrush, you won't get it out of this. This is a transitional device for people wanting to step up from entry level but still not wanting to commit financially to the high end equipment. You already got the high end equipment. You just need to spend some time getting the neighbors onboard with the program. Cookie and brownie bribes seem to work in my neighborhood.

    How does this differ from the gembox 2 ? (soundwise )

      i have a gembox 2. pretty similar really. updates, new features but the 2 just has smaller screen and more of the 3's buttons were just 'in-screen'.

      He is left handed. All left handed players play the guitar so called upside down.

    As cool as something like this is, for this old man it's too much for me. I'd rather play guitar than play dials and buttons.

    No way can this compete with the Boss GT1. Not on price and not on name brand mojo. IMO, this FX unit is going to fail big time.
