The best Small Engine channel ever. 4 years ago my daughters starter motor vibrated out and broke the threads out. I used JB Weld to fill the holes and retapped them a little smaller and used 1/4" aluminum tubing as sleeves to make up the slop of the smaller bolts. The repair is still going strong as of last week.

The electric start on my Craftsman stopped working a few years ago and I've been using the pull start ever since. As soon as I got done watching this video I went out to the garage and checked the starter. Yep! The starter was loose and a bolt was missing. It looks like I have to take off the pull start cowling assembly to check the teeth on the rotor. Project for tomorrow!. Damn, I love these TH-cam videos.

Great tip! Because of your videos my snowblower runs like a dream, and starts on first compression stroke every time, even after it sits all summer. I follow all of your advice. So I have never used the starter motor. I just checked, and sure enough, it was totally loose. Now it is tightened up with loctite.

You are so right about the cost of loose bolts. I’ve just had to scrap a 30” snowblower fitted with a Tecumseh engine because it has shaken itself to pieces. The starter motor bolts came loose and stripped the threads. The motor actually fell off! The metal housing holding the pull starter has split at two locations due to loose/missing fasteners, so that the pull starter will not work. And two of the bolts holding the engine on to the frame have dropped out. The engine now rocks sideways! My replacement machine will have a Briggs and Stratton OHV engine!

just remember, the two upper bolts are shouldered bolts and although it will feel like the starter is loose after you "tighten" them, the bottom two hold the starter onto the engine while the upper 2 keep it lined up....my first time with this setup, i swore the bolts were too long and bottoming out and then I took them out and it was my "A-Haaa" moment...great video Don

On my used, old, Noma 10/31 snowblower the first few threads on the engine's aluminum block that hold the starter were stripped. It was likely due to the problem described in this video. The blower uses a rattlely Tecumseh 10 HP engine, HMSK100. I was considering options to repair the thread. Further inspection showed that the depth of the hole allowed for a much longer screw than the original. So, to secure the starter at its lower side, I used longer bolts and jam nuts (rather than the head of the bolt) to secure the starter to the block. A little loctite was the icing on the cake. I also may have slipped washers under the top starter mounting holes to improve the engagement of the gears by shifting the starter's angle. Even though the electric starter works again, I normally use the pull starter but like the option of electric start when the blower gets covered in ice (it's stored outside) and I can't pull the starter rope.
    Thanks for your fantastic videos!

I am on the Pacific coast of Canada and we only get a bit of snow but the insurance companies here will halve your pay out if you don't run winter tires below 7°c., so lots of folks use them and you can't travel to higher elevations without them or carrying chains.

I never used my electric start before. I keep it in my shed with no electricity. I have a newer Husqvarna ST227P that's four years old and it never gives me a problem. I have it serviced yearly at my Husqvarna dealer. Living in upstate NY in the Adirondacks we get a lot of snow. Having an extension cord on hand is great but when you need to snow blow immediately and just want to play in the snow nothing like a good old pull start!

Be nice to have a spare if cheep enough was storm when it let me down last time ...
Think I might sell the other one though it's around mid '80 to mid '90 I'd say would have to try and find where numbers are for that one... Starts great just don't like holding handles down on both sides rather steer and Control Shute..and world gears get done faster to old for cold..😜

Had this same problem with the lower starter bolts a few years back and the front bolt had broke away the corner of the engine mounting casting for starter and not enough threads left to secure the starter. Drilled out the threads and going a little deeper careful not going through engine block, used bottoming tap and 5/16-18 heli-coil insetting it with red thread lock and built broken out corner up with J B weld. Put starter back on with blue thread lock on bolts and still holding up today and everything still secure. Others may not be lucky with that repair but I was. Caution can be a very tricky repair.
I don’t suggest this repair to a novice not being familiar.

I went to start my father's 20 year old Craftsman snowblower with Tecumseh engine a couple of weeks ago, and it sounded like a broken Rod. Turns out it was the starter, but in my case, the starter bolts were snug. Maybe teeth are busted. Snowblower still starts fine either way with the pull cord or with the electric start.

I immediately though oh man it’s the carburetor. After checking the main jet and tank the gas was clean! I didn’t know what else to check. I brought it to my dealer and he was perplexed as well since it started and ran fine until under load. He than noticed after watching my video it dying and said it is due to liquid getting on my fuel tank which is charcoal. He said it’s like taking a straw and starving it with gas. My Honda is a 2013. Do you think it's good to just check all the bolts after the season is over, this way you're sure that nothing has come loose or is coming loose.
